Abstract

In this paper we study multipartite and correlated majorization of the finite discrete probability distributions emerging in quantum information theory. We start proving the subadditivity of the Rényi and Burg entropies, and we show that the criteria for such a generalized majorization scheme can be provided solely in terms of the Rényi and Burg entropies. Surprisingly, the same set of criteria applies both to the correlated and uncorrelated cases. Finally, based on our findings in majorization, we give a proof of the characterization of the Rényi and Burg entropies in terms of continuity, symmetry and (sub)additivity.

A Generalization of Majorization that Characterizes Shannon Entropy

Markus P. Müller, Michele Pastena

We introduce a binary relation on the finite discrete probability distributions, which generalizes notions of majorization that have been studied in quantum information theory. Motivated by questions in thermodynamics, our relation describes the transitions induced by bistochastic maps in the presence of additional auxiliary systems, which may become correlated in the process. We show that this relation is completely characterized by Shannon entropy H, which yields an interpretation of H in resource-theoretic terms, and admits a particularly simple proof of a known characterization of H in terms of natural information-theoretic properties.

Entropies, majorization flow, and continuity bounds

Eric P. Hanson, Nilanjana Datta

Entropies play a fundamental role in classical and quantum information theory. There are a plethora of quantum entropies and they satisfy a host of interesting properties. The von Neumann entropy, the first quantum entropy to be defined and arguably the most important of them, satisfies a powerful property called strong subadditivity. It was proved by Lieb and Ruskai in 1973 and has turned out to be an essential tool in establishing various important results in quantum information theory. We briefly review this property and its applications. Our main focus, however, is on another desirable property of entropies, namely, continuity. We introduce a notion of majorization flow and demonstrate it to be a powerful tool for deriving simple and universal proofs of continuity bounds for Schur concave functions with a particular emphasis on entropic functions relevant in information theory. In particular, for the case of the $\alpha$-Rényi entropy, whose connections to thermodynamics are discussed in this chapter, majorization flow yields a Lipschitz continuity bound for the case $\alpha>1$, thus resolving an open problem and providing a substantial improvement over previously known bounds.

Rényi generalizations of quantum information measures

Mario Berta, Kaushik Parasuram Seshadreesan, Mark M. Wilde

Quantum information measures such as the entropy and the mutual information find applications in physics, e.g., as correlation measures. Generalizing such measures based on the R\'enyi entropies is expected to enhance their scope in applications. We prescribe R\'enyi generalizations for any quantum information measure which consists of a linear combination of von Neumann entropies with coefficients chosen from the set $\left\{\ensuremath{-}1,0,1\right\}$. As examples, we describe R\'enyi generalizations of the conditional quantum mutual information, some quantum multipartite information measures, and the topological entanglement entropy. Among these, we discuss the various properties of the R\'enyi conditional quantum mutual information and sketch some potential applications. We conjecture that the proposed R\'enyi conditional quantum mutual informations are monotone increasing in the R\'enyi parameter, and we have proof of this conjecture for some special cases.

The structure of Rényi entropic inequalities

Noah Linden, Milán Mosonyi, Andreas Winter

We investigate the universal inequalities relating the α -Rényi entropies of the marginals of a multi-partite quantum state. This is in analogy to the same question for the Shannon and von Neumann entropies ( α =1), which are known to satisfy several non-trivial inequalities such as strong subadditivity. Somewhat surprisingly, we find for 0< α <1 that the only inequality is non-negativity: in other words, any collection of non-negative numbers assigned to the non-empty subsets of n parties can be arbitrarily well approximated by the α -entropies of the 2 n −1 marginals of a quantum state. For α >1, we show analogously that there are no non-trivial homogeneous (in particular, no linear) inequalities. On the other hand, it is known that there are further, nonlinear and indeed non-homogeneous, inequalities delimiting the α -entropies of a general quantum state. Finally, we also treat the case of Rényi entropies restricted to classical states (i.e. probability distributions), which, in addition to non-negativity, are also subject to monotonicity. For α ≠0,1, we show that this is the only other homogeneous relation.

Polygon relations and subadditivity of entropic measures for discrete and continuous multipartite entanglement

Lijun Liu, Xiaozhen Ge, Shuming Cheng

Abstract In a recent work by us Ge et al [Phys. Rev. A 110, L010402 (2024)], we have derived a series of polygon relations of bipartite entanglement measures that is useful to reveal entanglement properties of discrete, continuous, and even hybrid multipartite quantum systems. In this work, with the information-theoretical measures of Rényi and Tsallis entropies, we study the relationship between the polygon relation and the subadditivity of entropy. In particular, the entropy-polygon relations are derived for pure multi-qubit states and then generalized to multi-mode Gaussian states, by utilizing the known results from the quantum marginal problem. Then the equivalence between the polygon relation and subadditivity is established, in the sense that for all discrete or continuous multipartite states, the polygon relation holds if and only if the underlying entropy is subadditive. As a byproduct, the subadditivity of Rényi and Tsallis entropies is proven for all bipartite Gaussian states. Finally, the difference between polygon relations and monogamy relations is clarified, and generalizations of our results are discussed. Our work provides a better understanding of the rich structure of multipartite states, and hence is expected to be helpful for the study of multipartite entanglement.

The subadditivity of quantum entropy in Gaussian quantum systems

Lijun Liu, Xiaozhen Ge, Shuming Cheng

The entropy of a quantum state measures the information or uncertainty contained in the quantum system and plays a crucial role in quantum information theory. Many entropic properties, such as the subadditivity, have been studied for the discrete system with a finite-dimensional state space, while much less is explored in the infinite-dimensional system. In this work, we study the entropic properties of the continuous system that models a collection of Gaussian modes or fields. In particular, we identify the parameter range for the Rényi, Tsallis, and Unified entropies of Gaussian states that they are additive, subadditive, and strong subadditive. We show that the Rényi entropies are subadditive, further giving rise to the subadditivity of the Tsallis and Unified entropies in certain parameter range. We also find that the Tsallis and Unified entropies are not strong subadditive, while the Rényi entropies with the order ranging from 1 to 2 are conjectured to admit the strong subadditivity. Our results are useful in studying quantum correlations and channel capacities in Gaussian systems.
