Abstract

Continuous-time Markovian evolution appears to be manifestly different in classical and quantum worlds. We consider ensembles of random generators of N-dimensional Markovian evolution, quantum and classical ones, and evaluate their universal spectral properties. We then show how the two types of generators can be related by superdecoherence. In analogy with the mechanism of decoherence, which transforms a quantum state into a classical one, superdecoherence can be used to transform a Lindblad operator (generator of quantum evolution) into a Kolmogorov operator (generator of classical evolution). We inspect spectra of random Lindblad operators undergoing superdecoherence and demonstrate that, in the limit of complete superdecoherence, the resulting operators exhibit spectral density typical to random Kolmogorov operators. By gradually increasing strength of superdecoherence, we observe a sharp quantum-to-classical transition. Furthermore, we define an inverse procedure of supercoherification that is a generalization of the scheme used to construct a quantum state out of a classical one. Finally, we study microscopic correlation between neighboring eigenvalues through the complex spacing ratios and observe the horseshoe distribution, emblematic of the Ginibre universality class, for both types of random generators. Remarkably, it survives both superdecoherence and supercoherification.

Random Lindblad Operators Obeying Detailed Balance

Wojciech Tarnowski, Dariusz Chruściński, Sergey Denisov +1 more

We introduce different ensembles of random Lindblad operators [Formula: see text], which satisfy quantum detailed balance condition with respect to given stationary state [Formula: see text] of size [Formula: see text], and investigate their spectral properties. Such operators are known as ‘Davies generators’ and their eigenvalues are real; however, their spectral densities depend on [Formula: see text]. We propose different structured ensembles of random matrices, which allow us to tackle the problem analytically in the extreme cases of Davies generators corresponding to random [Formula: see text] with a nondegenerate spectrum or the maximally mixed stationary state, [Formula: see text]. Interestingly, in the latter case the density can be reasonably well approximated by integrating out the imaginary component of the spectral density characteristic to the ensemble of random unconstrained Lindblad operators. The case of asymptotic states with partially degenerated spectra is also addressed. Finally, we demonstrate that similar universal properties hold for the detailed balance-obeying Kolmogorov generators obtained by applying superdecoherence to an ensemble of random Davies generators. In this way we construct an ensemble of random classical generators with imposed detailed balance condition.

Corralling spectra of generators of time-continuous Markov evolution (both classical and quantum)

Dariusz Chruściński, Sergey Denisov, Wojciech Tarnowski +1 more

Abstract The spectral properties of operators generating Markov evolution provide essential information about processes induced by these operators. The celebrated theorem of Perron and Frobenius implies that spectra of classical discrete-time Markov operators, represented by stochastic matrices, are restricted to the unit disk. This property holds also for spectra of quantum stochastic maps (quantum channels), which describe quantum Markovian evolution in discrete time. Moreover, the spectra of stochastic N × N matrices are additionally restricted to a subset of the unit disk, called Karpelevi c ˘ region, the shape of which depends onN. We pose the question of whether the spectra of generators that induce continuous-time Markovian evolution can be corralled in a similar way. We propose renormalization procedures that allow us to answer the question affirmatively. The eigenvalues of the renormalized classical Markov generators are confined to modified Karpelevi c ˘ regions, whereas the eigenvalues of the renormalized quantum Markov generators are confined to the unit disk. We discuss spectral corralling for different symmetry classes of the generators and also make a few steps beyond the conventional assumptions of complete positivity and strict Markovianity. Our approach enables direct comparisons of the spectra of Markov generators arising from diverse fields, spanning multiple timescales, parameter ranges, and dimensionalities.

Beyond the lemon: Spectra of random Lindblad operators with a Hamiltonian component

Mykhailo Hontarenko, Wojciech Tarnowski, Sergey Denisov +1 more

Generators of continuous-time quantum Markovian evolution, known as Lindblad operators, play a key role in the theory of open quantum systems. The question of how to define and characterize random Lindblad operators has attracted considerable attention in recent years. Purely dissipative random Lindbladians have been extensively studied using toolboxes of free probability and non-Hermitian random matrix theories, which helped to uncover a characteristic lemon-like spectral support. In this work, we focus on random Lindbladians with a Hamiltonian component. We analyze three ensembles of increasing complexity, designed to illustrate the joint effects of dissipative and Hamiltonian dynamics. While the first two allow for an exact analytic treatment with standard probabilistic and scalar-valued free-probability methods, the most general case requires the more general framework of operator-valued free probability. We explain how the spectral support changes with the relative Hamiltonian strength and the rank of the dissipative component and characterize the effect of Hamiltonian-induced spectral squeezing.

Decoherence rate in random Lindblad dynamics

Yifeng Yang, Zhenyu Xu, Adolfo del Campo

Open quantum systems undergo decoherence, which is responsible for the transition from quantum to classical behavior. The time scale in which decoherence takes place can be analyzed using upper limits to its rate. We examine the dynamics of open chaotic quantum systems governed by random Lindblad operators sourced from Gaussian and Ginibre ensembles with Wigner-Dyson symmetry classes. In these systems, the ensemble-averaged purity decays monotonically as a function of time. This decay is governed by the decoherence rate, which is upper-bounded by the dimension of their Hilbert space and is independent of the ensemble symmetry. These findings hold upon mixing different ensembles, indicating the universal character of the decoherence rate limit. Moreover, our findings reveal that open chaotic quantum systems governed by random Lindbladians tend to exhibit the most rapid decoherence, regardless of the initial state. This phenomenon is associated with the concentration of the decoherence rate near its upper bound. Our work identifies primary features of decoherence in dissipative quantum chaos, with applications ranging from quantum foundations to high-energy physics and quantum technologies. Dissipation and decoherence for generic open quantum systems

Lucas Sá

We study generic open quantum systems with Markovian dissipation, focusing on a class of stochastic Liouvillian operators of Lindblad form with independent random dissipation channels (jump operators) and a random Hamiltonian. We perform a thorough numerical study, focusing on global spectral features, the spectral gap, and the steady-state purity and statistics. We establish that all properties follow three different regimes as a function of the dissipation strength, whose boundaries depend on the particular observable. Within each regime, we determine the scaling exponents with the dissipation strength and system size. On the analytical side, we compute the average spectral gap at arbitrary dissipation and provide simple closed-form expressions for the asymptotic values at strong and weak dissipation strength. We also consider spectral correlations in generic complex spectra, such as that of the Liouvillian. We introduce and study, both analytically and numerically, the complex ratio of the nearest-neighbor spacing by next-to-nearest-neighbor spacing. Besides the usual level repulsion, we find that complex spacing ratios have a nontrivial angular dependence which offers a distinct signature of quantum chaos. It distinguishes integrable systems, which support the flat ratio distribution characteristic of Poisson statistics, and chaotic dissipative quantum systems, which conform to Random Matrix Theory statistics. We apply this new signature of quantum chaos to random Liouvillians and boundary-driven dissipative spin-chains. The results of this thesis can help understand the long-time dynamics, steady-state properties, and spectral correlations of generic dissipative systems.

Surprising Interactions of Markovian noise and Coherent Driving

Shai Machnes, Martin Bodo Plenio

We derive the explicit commutation relations for the generators of quantum dynamical semigroup - Markovian superoperator evolution, allowing the extension of Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff-type relations to general Lindblad-type evolutions. This provides a novel tool for exploring the interaction of time-dependent coherent and Markovian evolutions - a surprisingly rich set of behaviors which include deformation by coherent driving of Markovian terms, generation of new Lindblad terms from time-dependent noise and even a coherent driving term generated by the interaction of time-separated Markovian noises. Finally, we consider the Lindblad superoperators as vectors in a higher space, allowing us to extract the infinitely divisible subspace of a given channel and to recover its Lindblad form.
