Abstract

We reconsider the composite fermion theory of general Jain sequences with filling factor $\ensuremath{\nu}=N/(4N\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1)$. We show that Goldman and Fradkin's proposal of a Dirac composite fermion leads to a violation of the Haldane bound on the coefficient of the static structure factor. To resolve this apparent contradiction, we add to the effective theory a gapped chiral mode (or modes) that already exists in the Fermi liquid state at $\ensuremath{\nu}=1/4$. We interpret the additional mode as an internal degree of freedom of the composite fermion, related to area-preserving deformations of the elementary droplet built up from electrons and correlation holes. In addition to providing a suitable static structure factor, our model also gives the expected Wen-Zee shift and a Hall conductivity that manifests Galilean invariance. We show that the charge density in the model satisfies the long-wavelength version of the Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman algebra.

Particle-hole symmetry and composite fermions in fractional quantum Hall states

Dung Xuan Nguyen, Siavash Golkar, Matthew M. Roberts +1 more

We study fractional quantum Hall states at filling fractions in the Jain sequences using the framework of composite Dirac fermions. Synthesizing previous work, we write an effective field theory consistent with all symmetry requirements, including Galilean invariance and particle-hole symmetry. Employing a Fermi-liquid description, we demonstrate the appearance of the Girvin-Macdonald-Platzman algebra and compute the dispersion relation of neutral excitations and various response functions. Our results satisfy requirements of particle-hole symmetry. We show that while the dispersion relation obtained from the modified random-phase approximation (MRPA) of the Halperin-Lee-Read (HLR) theory is particle-hole symmetric, correlation functions obtained from this scheme are not. The results of the Dirac theory are shown to be consistent with the Haldane bound on the projected structure factor, while those of the MPRA of the HLR theory violate it.

Is the composite fermion a dirac particle?

Dam Thanh Son

We propose a particle-hole symmetric theory of the Fermi-liquid ground state of a half-filled Landau level. This theory should be applicable for a Dirac fermion in the magnetic field at charge neutrality, as well as for the v = 1/2 quantum Hall ground state of nonrelativistic fermions in the limit of negligible inter-Landau-level mixing. We argue that when particle-hole symmetry is exact, the composite fermion is a massless Dirac fermion, characterized by a Berry phase of π around the Fermi circle. We write down a tentative effective field theory of such a fermion and discuss the discrete symmetries, in particular, C P. The Dirac composite fermions interact through a gauge, but non-Chern-Simons, interaction. The particle-hole conjugate pair of Jain-sequence states at filling factors n/(2n + 1) and (n + 1)/(2n + 1), which in the conventional composite fermion picture corresponds to integer quantum Hall states with different filling factors, n and n + 1, is now mapped to the same half-integer filling factor n + 1/2 of the Dirac composite fermion. The Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states are interpreted as d -wave Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer paired states of the Dirac fermion with orbital angular momentum of opposite signs, while s -wave pairing would give rise to a particle-hole symmetric non-Abelian gapped phase. When particle-hole symmetry is not exact, the Dirac fermion has a C P -breaking mass. The conventional fermionic Chern-Simons theory is shown to emerge in the nonrelativistic limit of the massive theory.

Electromagnetic response of composite Dirac fermions in the half-filled Landau level

Johannes Hofmann

An effective field theory of composite Dirac fermions was proposed by Son [Phys. Rev. X 5, 031027 (2015)] as a theory of the half-filled Landau level with explicit particle-hole symmetry. We compute the electromagnetic response of this Son-Dirac theory on the level of the random phase approximation (RPA), where we pay particular attention to the effect of an additional composite-fermion dipole term that is needed to restore Galilean invariance. We find that once this dipole correction is taken into account, spurious interband transitions and collective modes that are present in the response of the unmodified theory either cancel or are strongly suppressed. We demonstrate that this gives rise to a consistent theory of the half-filled Landau level valid at all frequencies, at least to leading order in the momentum. In addition, the dipole contribution modifies the Fermi-liquid response at small frequency and momentum, which is a prediction of the Son-Dirac theory within the RPA that distinguishes it from a separate description of the half-filled Landau level by Halperin, Lee, and Read within the RPA.

Lowest Landau level theory of the bosonic Jain states

Hart Goldman, T. Senthil

Quantum Hall systems offer the most familiar setting where strong interparticle interactions combine with the topology of single-particle states to yield novel phenomena. Despite our mature understanding of these systems, an open challenge has been to develop a microscopic theory capturing both their universal and nonuniversal properties, when the Hamiltonian is restricted to the noncommutative space of the lowest Landau level. Here we develop such a theory for the Jain sequence of bosonic fractional quantum Hall states at fillings $\ensuremath{\nu}=\frac{p}{p+1}$. Building on a lowest Landau level description of a parent composite Fermi liquid at $\ensuremath{\nu}=1$, we describe how to dope the system to reach the Jain states. Upon doping, the composite fermions fill noncommutative generalizations of Landau levels, and the Jain states correspond to integer composite fermion filling. Using this approach, we obtain an approximate expression for the bosonic Jain sequence gaps with no reference to any long-wavelength approximation. Furthermore, we show that the universal properties, such as Hall conductivity, are encoded in an effective noncommutative Chern-Simons theory, which is obtained on integrating out the composite fermions. This theory has the same topological content as the familiar Abelian Chern-Simons theory on commutative space.

Emergent Gauge Field in Composite-Fermion Metals: A Large-Scale Microscopic Study

Amogh Anakru, Mytraya Gattu, Ajit Coimbatore Balram +4 more

Field theories of the composite-fermion (CF) metal model it as a Fermi sea of composite fermions coupled to an emergent gauge field. Within a random phase approximation, these theories predict that the Landau damping of the gauge field resulting from its coupling to the low-energy, long-wavelength CF particle-hole excitations modifies the electrons' density-density correlation function related to the static structure factor S(q) at wave vector q. This produces a nonanalytic correction ∝q^{3}lnq to S(q) (with the magnetic length ℓ_{B}=1). Thanks to the recently developed quaternion formulation for Jain-Kamilla projection of CF wave functions, the evaluation of S(q) from the accurate microscopic theory of composite fermions has now become possible for systems containing as many as N=900 CFs, which enables a reliable determination of the small-q behavior of S(q). We study CF metals corresponding to electrons at Landau level filling factors ν=1/2 and 1/4, and for completeness, also of bosons at ν=1 and 1/3. In the q→0 limit, our microscopic calculation reveals a q^{3} term in S(q) of the CF metals rather than q^{3}lnq. This behavior is well predicted by a model of a noninteracting Fermi sea of dipolar CFs, which also obtains its coefficient accurately.

Conformal Field Theory of Composite Fermions

T. H. Hansson, C.-C. Chang, Jainendra K. Jain +1 more

We show that the quantum Hall wave functions for the ground states in the Jain series nu=n/(2np+1) can be exactly expressed in terms of correlation functions of local vertex operators Vn corresponding to composite fermions in the nth composite-fermion (CF) Landau level. This allows for the powerful mathematics of conformal field theory to be applied to the successful CF phenomenology. Quasiparticle and quasihole states are expressed as correlators of anyonic operators with fractional (local) charge, allowing a simple algebraic understanding of their topological properties that are not manifest in the CF wave functions. Moreover, our construction shows how the states in the nu=n/(2np+1) Jain sequence may be interpreted as condensates of quasiparticles.
