Abstract The evolution of quantum spin liquid states (QSL) of the anisotropic antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev model with the [001] magnetic field by utilizing the finite‐temperature Lanczos method (FTLM) is investigated. In this anisotropic Kitaev model with and (K is the energy unit), due to the competition between anisotropy and magnetic field, the system emerges four exotic quantum phase transitions (QPTs) when and , while only two QPTs when . At these magnetic‐field tuning quantum phase transition points, the low‐energy excitation spectrums appear level crossover, and the specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and Wilson ratio display anomalies; accordingly, the topological Chern number may also change. These results demonstrate that the anisotropic interacting Kitaev model with modulating magnetic field displays more rich phase diagrams, in comparison with the isotropic Kitaev model.

We investigate the quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state of anisotropic Kitaev model with antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling under the [001] magnetic field with the finite-temperature Lanczos method (FTLM). In this anisotropic AFM Kitaev model with KX=KY, KX+KY+KZ=−3K, and KZ<−K, with magnetic field increasing, the gapped QSL experiences a transition to a gapless QSL at hc1=gμBHz1/K, to another gapless QSL with C6 rotational symmetry at hc2, and to a new U(1) gapless QSL between hc3 and hc4, respectively. These indicate that magnetic field could first turn the anisotropic gapped or gapless QSL back into the isotropic C6 gapless one and then make it to undergo the similar evolution as the isotropic case. Moreover, the critical magnetic fields hc1, hc2, hc3, and hc4 come up monotonically with the increasing Kitaev coupling; this suggests that the magnetic field can be applied to the modulation of the anisotropic Kitaev materials.
We study quantum phase transitions in the honeycomb Kitaev model under a magnetic field, focusing on the topological nature of Majorana fermion excitations. We find a gapless phase between the low-field gapless quantum spin liquid and the high-field gapped forced-ferromagnetic state for the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model in the [001] field by using the Majorana mean-field theory, in conjunction with the exact diagonalization and the spin-wave theory supporting the validity of this approach. The transition between the two gapless phases is driven by a topological change of the Majorana spectrum---line node formation interconnecting two Majorana cones. The peculiar change of the Majorana band topology is rationalized by a sign change of the effective Kitaev coupling by the magnetic field, which does not occur in the ferromagnetic Kitaev case. Upon tilting the magnetic field away from [001], the two gapless phases become gapped and topologically nontrivial, characterized by nonzero Chern numbers with different signs. The sign change of the Chern number leads to a reversal of the thermal edge current in the half-quantized thermal Hall effect.
The Kitaev spin liquid, stabilized as the ground state of the Kitaev honeycomb model, is a paradigmatic example of a topological Z2 quantum spin liquid. The fate of the Kitaev spin liquid in presence of an external magnetic field is at present, a subject of intense scrutiny due to recent experimental signatures pointing to a Z2 topological phase in certain materials, as well as theoretical studies predicting the emergence of a quantum spin liquid phase of debated nature. In this work, we employ hierarchical mean-field theory, a method based on the use of clusters preserving relevant symmetries and short-range quantum correlations, to investigate the quantum phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev's model in a [111] magnetic field. By using clusters of 24 sites, we predict that the Kitaev spin liquid transits through two intermediate phases, characterized by emerging stripe and chiral orders, respectively, before entering the trivial partially polarized phase, differing from previous studies. We assess our results by performing exact diagonalization and computing the scaling of different observables, including the many-body Chern number and other topological quantities, thus establishing hierarchical mean-field theory as a method to study models of frustrated quantum magnetism potentially hosting topological quantum spin liquids.
We investigate the non-Abelian topological chiral spin-liquid phase in the two-dimensional Kitaev honeycomb model subject to a magnetic field. By combining density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization we study the energy spectra, entanglement, topological degeneracy, and expectation values of Wilson loop operators, allowing for a robust characterization. While the ferromagnetic Kitaev spin liquid is already destroyed by a weak magnetic field with Zeeman energy ${H}_{*}^{\text{FM}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.02$, the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin liquid remains robust up to a magnetic field that is an order of magnitude larger, ${H}_{*}^{\text{AFM}}\ensuremath{\approx}0.2$. Interestingly, for larger fields H∗AFM<H<H∗∗AFM, an intermediate gapless phase is observed, before a second transition to the high-field partially polarized paramagnet. We attribute this rich phase diagram, and the remarkable stability of the chiral topological phase in the AFM Kitaev model, to the interplay of strong spin-orbit coupling and frustration enhanced by the magnetic field. Our findings suggest relevance to recent experiments on RuCl3 under magnetic fields.
We investigate the non-Abelian topological chiral spin liquid phase in the two-dimensional (2D) Kitaev honeycomb model subject to a magnetic field. By combining density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and exact diagonalization (ED) we study the energy spectra, entanglement, topological degeneracy, and expectation values of Wilson loop operators, allowing for robust characterization. While the ferromagnetic (FM) Kitaev spin liquid is already destroyed by a weak magnetic field with Zeeman energy H∗FM≈0.02, the antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin liquid remains robust up to a magnetic field that is an order of magnitude larger, H∗AFM≈0.2. Interestingly, for larger fields H∗AFM<H<H∗∗AFM, an intermediate gapless phase is observed, before a second transition to the high-field partially-polarized paramagnet. We attribute this rich phase diagram, and the remarkable stability of the chiral topological phase in the AFM Kitaev model, to the interplay of strong spin-orbit coupling and frustration enhanced by the magnetic field. We discuss possible relevance of this result to RuCl3 under various magnetic fields.
The Kitaev model is an exactly solvable quantum spin model within the language of constrained real fermions. In spite of numerous studies for magnetic fields along special orientations, there is a limited amount of knowledge on the complete field-angle characterization, which can provide valuable information on the existence of fractionalized excitations. For this purpose, we first study the pure ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kitaev models for arbitrary external magnetic field directions via a mean-field theory, showing that there are many topological phases with different (or zero) Chern numbers, depending on the magnetic field strength and orientations. However, a realistic description of the candidate Kitaev materials, within the edge-sharing octahedra paradigm, requires additional coupling terms, including a large off-diagonal term $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ along with possible anisotropic corrections ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{p}$. It is therefore not sufficient to rely on the topological properties of the bare Kitaev model as the basis for the observed thermal Hall-conductivity signals, and an understanding of these extended Kitaev models with a complete field response is demanded. Starting from the zero-field phase diagram of $\mathrm{K}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{p}$ models, we identify, besides the Kitaev spin liquid phase, antiferromagnetic zigzag, ferromagnetic phases, as well as an unusual Kitaev(-$\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$) spin liquid phase. The magnetic field response of these phases for arbitrary field orientations provides a remarkably rich phase diagram. For an extended parameter range and just above the critical field where the zigzag phase is suppressed, there is an intermediate phase region with suppressed energy gaps and substantial spin fractionalization. To comply our findings with experiments, we also reproduce a large asymmetry in the extent of this intermediate phases specifically for the two different field directions $\ensuremath{\theta}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{60}^{o}$ with respect to the normal to the plane of the honeycomb lattice.
