Abstract

In this paper we show that for sufficiently strong atomic interactions, there exist analytical solutions of current-carrying nonlinear Bloch states at the Brillouin zone edge to the model of spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with symmetric spin interaction loaded into optical lattices. These simple but generic exact solutions provide an analytical demonstration of some intriguing properties which have neither an analog in the regular BEC lattice systems nor in the uniform spin-orbit-coupled BEC systems. It is an analytical example for understanding the superfluid and other related properties of the spin-orbit-coupled BEC lattice systems.

Band-edge superfluid of Bose-Einstein condensates in the spin-orbit-coupled Zeeman lattice

Huaxin He, Fengtao Pang, Hao Lyu +1 more

Since the first experimental realization of Bose-Einstein condensates in a spin-orbit-coupled Zeeman lattice, a wide range of applications have been found in these systems. Here, we systematically study the ground-state phase diagram of the systems. The spin-orbit-coupled Zeeman lattice generates multiple energy minima in the lowest Bloch band. These minima may locate at Brillouin-zone edges and center, or inside the Brillouin zone. Interacting atoms condensing into these minima constitute ground-state quantum phases. Among these phases, the band-edge condensation states have no analog in either spin-orbit-coupled homogeneous systems or lattice systems without the spin-orbit coupling. They exist in a very broad parameter regime of the spin-orbit-coupled Zeeman lattice system. We address superfluidity of the band-edge states by analyzing their elementary excitations and superfluid fraction.

Bose-Einstein condensates in spin-orbit-coupled optical lattices: Flat bands and superfluidity

Yongping Zhang, Chuanwei Zhang

Recently spin-orbit (SO)-coupled superfluids in free space or harmonic traps have been extensively studied, motivated by the recent experimental realization of SO coupling for Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). However, the rich physics of SO-coupled BEC in optical lattices has been largely unexplored. In this paper, we show that in a suitable parameter region the lowest Bloch state forms an isolated flat band in a one-dimensional SO-coupled optical lattice, which thus provides an experimentally feasible platform for exploring the recently celebrated topological flatband physics in lattice systems. We show that the flat band is preserved even with the mean-field interaction in BEC. We investigate the superfluidity of the BEC in SO-coupled lattices through dynamical and Landau stability analysis, and show that the BEC is stable on the whole flat band.

Vortex lattice solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with spin-orbit coupling in optical lattices

Hidetsugu Sakaguchi, Ben Li

Effective spin-orbit coupling can be created in cold atom systems using atom-light interaction. We study Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with spin-orbit coupling. Bloch states for the linear equation are numerically obtained, and compared with stationary solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with nonlinear terms. Various vortex lattice states are found when the spin-orbit coupling is strong.

Superfluidity of Bose–Einstein condensate in an optical lattice: Landau–Zener tunnelling and dynamical instability

Biao Wu, Qian Niu

Superflow of a Bose–Einstein condensate in an optical lattice is represented by a Bloch wave, a plane wave with periodic modulation of the amplitude. We review the theoretical results of the interaction effects in the energy dispersion of the Bloch waves and in the linear stability of such waves. For sufficiently strong repulsion between the atoms, the lowest Bloch band develops a loop at the edge of the Brillouin zone, with the dramatic consequence of a finite probability of Landau–Zener tunnelling even in the limit of a vanishing external force. Superfluidity can exist in the central region of the Brillouin zone in the presence of a repulsive interaction, beyond which Landau instability takes place where the system can lower its energy by making a transition into states with smaller Bloch wavenumbers. In the outer part of the region of Landau instability, the Bloch waves are also dynamically unstable in the sense that a small initial deviation grows exponentially in time. In the inner region of Landau instability, a Bloch wave is dynamically stable in the absence of persistent external perturbations. Experimental implications of our findings will be discussed.

Nonlinear energy band structure of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattice

Ai‐Xia Zhang, Yan-Fang Jiang, Ju-Kui Xue

In a recent experiment [Hamner C, et al. 2015 Phys. Rev. Lett. 114 070401 ], spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a translating optical lattice have been successfully prepared into any Bloch band, and directly proved to be the lack of Galilean invariance in the presence of the spin-orbit coupling. The energy band structure of the system becomes complicated because of the lack of Galilean invariance. At present, the energy band structure of the spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattice is still an open issue, especially the theoretical evidence for the in-depth understanding of the competition mechanism among the spin-orbit coupling, the Raman coupling, the optical lattice and the atomic interactions of the nonlinear energy band structure has not been clear yet. In this paper, based on the two-mode approximation and variational analysis, the nonlinear energy band structure and current density of the spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in the one-dimensional optical lattice are investigated. We find that when the spin-orbit coupling, the Raman coupling, the optical lattice, and the atomic interactions satisfy certain conditions, a loop structure in the Brillouin zone edge will emerge. The critical condition for the loop structure emerging in the Brillouin zone edge is obtained in a parameter space. The Raman coupling and the optical lattice suppress the emergence of the loop structure, while the spin-orbit coupling and the atomic interactions promote the emerging of the loop structure and make the energy band structure more complex. Interestingly, the atomic interactions can make the loop structure occur at both the higher-lying bands and the lowest energy band. The energy band structure is closely related to the current density of the system. The spin-orbit coupling causes the current density to be strongly asymmetric and leads the current density distributions of different spin states to be separated from each other in the momentum space near the boundary of the Brillouin zone. The optical lattice strength and the Raman coupling can weaken the asymmetry. The appearance of loop structure breaks the Bloch oscillation and gives rise to the Landau-Zener tunneling. The separation of the current density distributions of different spin states in the momentum space means the emergence of the spin exchange dynamics. Our results are beneficial to the in-depth understanding of the nonlinear dynamics of the spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattice.

Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates in Optical Lattices

Nikolay A. Kostov, Vladimir Stefanov Gerdjikov, V. Z. Enolski +2 more

Coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations (CNLS) with an external elliptic function potential model a quasi one-dimensional interacting two-component Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a standing light wave. New stationary solutions of the CNLS with a periodic potential are derived and interpreted as exact Bloch states at the edge of the Brillouin zone. The modulationally unstable solutions lead to formation of localized ground states of the coupled BEC system.
