Abstract

Abstract Applying the (infinite) density-matrix renormalisation group technique, we explore the effect of an explicit dimerisation on the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1 XXZ chain with single-ion anisotropy D. We demonstrate that the Haldane phase between large-D and antiferromagnetic phases survives up to a critical dimerisation only. As a further new characteristic the dimerisation induces a direct continuous Ising quantum phase transition between the large-D and antiferromagnetic phases with central charge $$c=1/2$$ c = 1 / 2 , which terminates at a critical end-point where $$c=7/10$$ c = 7 / 10 . Calculating the critical exponents of the order parameter, neutral gap and spin–spin-correlation function, we find $$\beta =1/8$$ β = 1 / 8 (1/24), $$\nu =1$$ ν = 1 (5/9), and $$\eta =1/4$$ η = 1 / 4 (3/20), respectively, which proves the Ising (tricritical Ising) universality class in accordance with field-theoretical predictions.

Exotic criticality in the dimerized spin-1 $XXZ$ chain with single-ion anisotropy

Satoshi Ejima, Tomoki Yamaguchi, Fabian H. L. Eßler +3 more

We consider the dimerized spin-1 XXZ chain with single-ion anisotropy D. In absence of an explicit dimerization there are three phases: a large-$D$, an antiferromagnetically ordered and a Haldane phase. This phase structure persists up to a critical dimerization, above which the Haldane phase disappears. We show that for weak dimerization the phases are separated by Gaussian and Ising quantum phase transitions. One of the Ising transitions terminates in a critical point in the universality class of the dilute Ising model. We comment on the relevance of our results to experiments on quasi-one-dimensional anisotropic spin-1 quantum magnets.

Tangential finite-size scaling at the Gaussian topological transition in the quantum spin-1 anisotropic chain

Luan M. Veríssimo, Maria S. S. Pereira, M. L. Lyra

Scaling aspects of Gaussian topological phase transitions in quantum spin chains are investigated using the prototypical one-dimensional spin-1 XXZ Heisenberg model with uniaxial single-ion anisotropy $D$. This model presents a critical line separating the gapped Haldane and large-$D$ phases, with the relevant energy gap closing at the transition point. We show that a proper tangential finite-size scaling analysis is able to accurately locate the Gaussian critical line and to probe the continuously varying set of correlation length critical exponents. The specific features of the tangential scaling are highlighted, in contrast to the standard scaling holding in the Ising-like transition between the gapless antiferromagnetic N\'eel and gapped Haldane phases. Our results are compared with field-theoretic predictions and available high-accuracy data for specific points along the Gaussian line.

Non-local Correlations in the Haldane Phase for an XXZ Spin-1 Chain: A Perspective from Infinite Matrix Product State Representation

Yao Heng Su, Sam Young Cho, Bo Li +2 more

String correlations are investigated in an infinite-size XXZ spin-1 chain. By using the infinite matrix product state representation, we calculate a long-range string order. In the XY phase, the string correlations decay within a relatively very large lattice distance, which makes a finite-size study difficult to verify the non-existence of the string order. Thus, in the Haldane phase, the non-vanishing string correlations in the limit of a very large distance allow to characterize the phase boundaries to the XY phase and the Neel phase, which implies that the transverse long-range string order is the order parameter for the Haldane phase. In addition, the singular behaviors of the von Neumann entropy and the fidelity per lattice site are shown to capture clearly the phase transition points that are consistent with the results from the string order. The estimated critical points including a BKT transition from the XY phase to the Haldane phase agree well with the previous results: $Δ_{c2} = 0$ for the XY-Haldane phase transition and $Δ_{c3} = 1.185$ for the Haldane-N'eel phase transition from the density renormalization group. From a finite-entanglement scaling of the von Neumann entropy with respect to the truncation dimension, the central charges are found to be $c \simeq 1.0$ at $Δ_{c2} = 0$ and $c \simeq 0.5$ at $Δ_{c3} = 1.185$, respectively, which shows that the XY-Haldane phase transition at $Δ_{c2} = 0$ belongs to the Heisenberg universality class, while the Haldane-Neel phase transition at $Δ_{c2} = 1.185$ belongs to the two-dimensional classical Ising universality class. It is also shown that, the long-range order parameters and the von Neumann entropy, as well as the fidelity per site approach, can be applied to characterize quantum phase transitions as a universal phase transition indicator for one-dimensional lattice many-body systems.

Correlation functions at the topological quantum phase transition in the S = 1 XXZ chain with single-ion anisotropy

Toshiya Hikihara, Akira Furusaki

We study the one-dimensional S=1 XXZ spin model with single-ion anisotropy. It is known that at the transition points between the Haldane and large-D phases, the model exhibits a quantum criticality described by the Gaussian theory, i.e., a conformal field theory with the central charge c=1. Using the bosonization approach, we investigate various correlation functions at the phase transition and derive their asymptotic forms. This allows us to clarify their peculiar behavior: the longitudinal (transverse) two-point spin correlation function has components that decay algebraically only in the uniform (staggered) sector. These theoretical predictions are verified by the numerical calculations using the density-matrix renormalization group method. The effect of weak bond alternation on the critical ground state at the phase transition is also discussed. It is shown that the bond alternation induces the missing power-law components in the correlation functions.

Quantum phase transitions in the dimerized extended Bose-Hubbard model

K. Sugimoto, Satoshi Ejima, Florian Lange +1 more

We present an unbiased numerical density-matrix renormalization group study of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model supplemented by nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction and bond dimerization. It places the emphasis on the determination of the ground-state phase diagram and shows that, besides dimerized Mott and density-wave insulating phases, an intermediate symmetry-protected topological Haldane insulator emerges at weak Coulomb interactions for filling factor one, which disappears, however, when the dimerization becomes too large. Analyzing the critical behavior of the model, we prove that the phase boundaries of the Haldane phase to Mott insulator and density-wave states belong to the Gaussian and Ising universality classes with central charges $c=1$ and $c=1/2$, respectively, and merge in a tricritical point. Interestingly we can demonstrate a direct Ising quantum phase transition between the dimerized Mott and density-wave phases above the tricritical point. The corresponding transition line terminates at a critical end point that belongs to the universality class of the dilute Ising model with $c=7/10$. At even stronger Coulomb interactions the transition becomes first order.

Quantum phase transitions beyond Landau-Ginzburg theory in one-dimensional space revisited

Christopher Mudry, Akira Furusaki, Takahiro Morimoto +1 more

The phase diagram of the quantum spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic ${J}_{1}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}$ XXZ chain was obtained by Haldane using bosonization techniques [Haldane, Phys. Rev. B 25, 4925 (1982); Phys. Rev. B 26, 5257 (1982)]. It supports three distinct phases for $0\ensuremath{\le}{J}_{2}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}/{J}_{1}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}<\frac{1}{2}$, i.e., a gapless algebraic spin-liquid phase, a gapped long-range ordered Neel phase, and a gapped long-range ordered dimer phase. Even though the Neel and dimer phases are not related hierarchically by a pattern of symmetry breaking, it was shown that they meet along a line of quantum critical points with a U(1) symmetry and central charge $c=1$. Here, we extend the analysis made by Haldane on the quantum spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic ${J}_{1}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}$ XYZ chain using both bosonization and numerical techniques. We show that there are three Neel phases and the dimer phase that are separated from each other by six planes of phase boundaries realizing Gaussian criticality when $0\ensuremath{\le}{J}_{2}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}/{J}_{1}^{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}<\frac{1}{2}$. We also show that each long-range ordered phase harbors topological point defects (domain walls) that are dual to those across the phase boundary in that a defect in one ordered phase locally binds the other type of order around its core. By using the bosonization approach, we identify the critical theory that describes simultaneous proliferation of these dual point defects, and show that it supports an emergent U(1) symmetry that originates from the discrete symmetries of the XYZ model. To confirm this numerically, we perform exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization-group calculations and show that the critical theory is characterized by the central charge $c=1$ with critical exponents that are consistent with those obtained from the bosonization approach. Furthermore, we generalize the field-theoretic description of direct continuous phase transition to higher dimensions, especially in $d=3$, by using a nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) with a topological term. In particular, we propose the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux phase on the cubic lattice with local quartic interactions as a platform for direct continuous phase transition and deconfined criticality. We discuss possible phase diagrams for the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux phase on the cubic lattice with these quartic interactions from the renormalization flow of NLSMs.
