Abstract

Abstract Rapidly and randomly drifted reference frames will shorten the transmission distance and decrease the secure key rate of realistic quantum key distribution (QKD) systems. In this article, we present a free-running reference-frame-independent (RFI) QKD scheme, where measurement events are classified into multiple slices with similar estimated classification parameter. We perform the free-running RFI QKD experiment with a fiber link of 100 km and reference frame misalignment more than 29 periods in 50.7 h. A key rate as high as 742.98 bps is achieved at the total loss of 31.5 dB benefiting from both the new protocol design and the 80 MHz repetition rate system in use. Our system runs 50.7 h freely without any reference frame alignment. In the experiment, the misalignment variation rate tolerance of the experiment is 0.262 rad/s, and could be optimized to 1.309 rad/s. Therefore, our free-running RFI scheme can be efficiently adapted into the satellite-to-ground and drone-based mobile communication scenarios.

High-Rate Free-Running Reference-Frame-Independent Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution with Classified Distillation

Xin Liu, Zhicheng Luo, Kaibiao Qin +3 more

Reference-frame-independent measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-MDI-QKD) eliminates detector side-channel attacks and avoids reference-frame calibration. While its feasibility has been widely demonstrated, existing implementations typically assume fixed or slowly drifting reference-frame misalignment, conditions rarely satisfied outside the laboratory. In realistic environments, rapid and free-running reference-frame variations can severely degrade both the key rate and transmission distance of conventional RFI-MDI-QKD. Here we propose a free-running RFI-MDI-QKD protocol that maintains high-rate key generation under rapid reference-frame variations. By introducing a classification-distillation method that reclassifies total detection events, secure keys can be extracted without modifying the experimental setup. Our protocol achieves a key rate more than nine times higher than the best previous RFI-MDI-QKD scheme and tolerates channel losses exceeding 24 dB, where earlier approaches fail. These results enable practical quantum key distribution on mobile platforms, including satellite-to-ground links and airborne nodes.

Reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution over 250 km of optical fiber

Xin Liu, Di Luo, Zhicheng Luo +3 more

The reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution (RFI QKD) protocol enables QKD systems to function effectively despite slowly varying reference frames, offering a distinct advantage in practical scenarios, particularly in mobile platforms. In this study, we successfully distribute secure key bits over a 250-km optical fiber distance by developing an RFI QKD system with a repetition rate of 150 MHz. Benefiting from high repetition rate, we achieve a finite-key secret key rate of 49.65 bit/s at a distance of 200 km, which is more than 3 times higher than state-of-the-art systems. Our work dramatically extends the transmission distance and enhances the secret key rate of RFI QKD, significantly promoting its practical application.

Four-state reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution over 200 km

Ziran Xie, Zhiyu Tian, Xiaodong Fan +2 more

Reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-QKD) has gained widespread attention due to its unique advantage for practical application, as it circumvents the need for active reference-frame alignment within the system. However, in comparison to the standard BB84 protocol, the original six-state RFI protocol requires a greater number of quantum states to be operated by Alice and Bob, which is an aspect that merits optimization. In this work, we propose a four-state RFI protocol and illustrate that Alice and Bob each require only four quantum states to perform channel estimation that remains independent of reference-frame deviation, which can proficiently reduce the system complexity. Furthermore, through numerical simulations taking the finite-key-size effect into consideration, we show that the four-state RFI protocol can achieve a secure key rate and transmission distance on par with those of the original six-state RFI protocol. Finally, an experiment over 200 km is conducted to evaluate the feasibility of our scheme. We believe that our protocol can streamline the implementation of RFI-QKD and thereby contribute to the practical advancement of RFI-QKD.

Reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution with random atmospheric transmission efficiency

Yang Xue, Lei Shi, Jiahua Wei +3 more

Reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-QKD) has been proved to be tolerant against unknown reference frame misalignment, which reserves interesting prospects in implementing global quantum communication. However, few works have been addressed on the performance and feasibility for RFI-QKD in turbulent atmospheric channels. Here, we propose to implement RFI-QKD in practical free-space links with fluctuating transmission efficiency due to beam wandering and broadening. An improved model for estimating the probability distribution of single-photon receiving efficiency has been developed and we also simulated the Gaussian beam spot evolution and secure key rate based on that. Results show that the beam wandering model of probability distribution of transmission efficiency is reasonable to improve the performance of RFI-QKD in free-space channel.

Improved reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution

Jian-Rong Zhu, Rong Wang, Chun-Mei Zhang

Reference-frame-independent quantum key distribution (RFI-QKD) can generate secure keys between two remote peers with an unknown and slowly drifted reference frame. It adopts a statistical quantity C independent of the rotation of the reference frame to estimate the eavesdropper’s knowledge. However, in practical scenarios, the estimation of C should be completed with data collected in a short period of time, since the variation of the reference frame during the run will smear its correlations. In this paper, we propose to improve the performance of RFI-QKD with a new, to the best of our knowledge, statistical quantity R , which is less sensitive to statistical fluctuations and more robust to the variation of the reference frame, and obtain an analytical bound to estimate the eavesdropper’s knowledge. Simulation results show that the performance of RFI-QKD in the non-asymptotic case can be significantly promoted, which is very promising in practical QKD systems. Furthermore, we apply the new statistical quantity R to the RFI measurement-device-independent QKD (RFI-MDI-QKD) protocol and demonstrate that significant improvement can also be obtained in RFI-MDI-QKD.
