Ground State Properties Of The One-Dimensional Hubbard Model: Symmetry Projected Variational Wave Function Approach

Abstract

We use the $C_{4v}$ symmetry group of the 4-site Hubbard model to construct a ground state variational wave function of two- and four interacting electrons. In the limit $U\rightarrow 0$, ground state energies of the two- and four interacting electrons system is of the order $-4t$. The variational wave function of the four interacting electrons obtained using the $B_1$ irreducible representation is valid for on-site Coulomb repulsion, while the one obtained using the $A_1$ representation is valid for negative values of the Coulomb interaction. The system exhibits antiferromagnetic correlations.

Ground-state properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model

H. Q. Lin

Using all appropriate symmetries for a two-dimensional square system, we have been able to diagonalize exactly the Hubbard Hamiltonian on the 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4 and 18-site lattices. We calculate the ground-state energies, hole-hole interactions, and various correlation functions as functions of the Coulomb repulsion U and band filling, and compare the Hubbard-model results with those obtained from the t-J and strong-coupling models.

Exact calculation of the two-electron interaction in the ground state of the Hubbard model

Liang Chen, Changjiang Mei

The single-band Hubbard model has been studied in both the one-dimensional ring and two-dimensional torus. By the exact calculation of the pair correlation function F(i,j), defined as the possibility of finding an electron at site j when there has been an electron at site i, it is shown that for two electrons, the interaction is always repulsive in the ground state for any positive value of the on-site Coulomb interaction U.

Exact and variational investigations of Hubbard rings

William Hodge

We study the one-dimensional Hubbard model for interacting electrons in a crystal lattice, using two methods: solution of the Lieb-Wu equations in the atomic limit of no intersite hopping, and variational techniques to obtain a lower bound for the ground state energy. From the Lieb-Wu equations we derive an exact expression for the ground state energy in the atomic limit. We obtain our result by exploiting the spin symmetry of the Hubbard Hamiltonian. Our energy is lower than that obtained by previous published results, and we are able to explain why our results differ. Our method also gives information about the magnetic ordering of the ground state as a function of the number of electrons. Our results are valid for arbitrary electron density values. The variational techniques we use are applied to the two-particle reduced-density matrix (2-RDM), because this quantity suffices to obtain expectation values of all one- and two-particle operators, and because it is less computationally intensive than obtaining the complete N -particle wave function. Because the 2-RDM must be positive semidefinite, we use an efficient programming algorithm known as the Semidefinite Programming Algorithm. A naive search through the space of two-particle matrices encounters a difficult problem, known as the " N -representability problem", which is to assure that the trial density matrices actually come from a wave function that has the required exchange symmetry. This problem is ameliorated by imposing constraints on the variational search that eliminate trial matrices with the incorrect exchange symmetry. These constraints express known physical properties of the ground state (for example its total spin and its translational symmetry) and the so-called D, Q , and G two-positivity conditions that express the required exchange symmetry. To calculate matrix elements, we use the two-particle eigenstates of the reduced Hubbard Hamiltonian; this choice of basis significantly decreases the number of matrix elements needed for energy calculations. After an optimal two-particle density matrix has been obtained, we calculate additional properties of the ground state, including spin correlation functions, chemical potentials, and the momentum distribution. We compare all of these properties to values obtained by exact numerical solution of the Schrödinger equation.

Perturbation theory of the Hubbard Hamiltonian on a 4×4 cluster of the square lattice

J. Galán, José Antonio Vergés

The ground-state wave function and energy are calculated for the one-band Hubbard Hamiltonian on a 4\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}4 cluster of the square lattice up to first and second order of the on-site Coulomb repulsion U, respectively. Changes induced by a deviation of the number of electrons from half-filling (one electron per lattice site) are closely followed. Charge-charge and spin-spin correlation functions are directly obtained from the ground-state wave function and show the existence of antiferromagnetic correlations that extend over the whole cluster at half-filling. Correlations among sites separated by more than a lattice site diminish very rapidly as holes are introduced into the cluster. The analysis is extended to the negative-U case. Ground-state properties change qualitatively.

Superconductivity and Inhomogeneous Charge-Ordered State in the Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model —Off-Diagonal Wave Function Monte Carlo Studies of Hubbard Model IV—

Takashi Yanagisawa

We investigate the ground-state properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model, based on the off-diagonal wave function variational Monte Carlo method. We use an optimized wave function that is improved from an initial one-body wave function by multiplying by multiple correlation operators that are given by the form of exp($-S$)-type where $S$ is a suitable operator. We examine the inhomogeneous ground state at near 1/8 doping in the strongly correlated region where the on-site Coulomb interaction is larger than the bandwidth. The $d$-wave superconductivity with a spatially oscillating gap function can coexist with the charge ordering in the ground state without magnetic ordering, and superconducting condensation energy increases by this coexistence. We also show the $d$-wave pair correlation function as a function of lattice sites. The correlation function indicates that the long-range superconducting order indeed exists, and also that the strong electron correlation suppresses the pair correlation function.

Ground state of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model

N. I. Chashchin

We investigate the ground state (T = 0 K) of the one-dimensional symmetrical (n = 1) Hubbard model formalized in terms of the system of integral equations, which we previously obtained using the method of the generating functional of Green’s functions with the subsequent Legendre transformation. In a wide range of variations in the parameter of Coulomb interaction U, the following characteristics of the system have been calculated: the electron density of states, the electron band spectrum, the number of doubly occupied lattice sites, the localized magnetic moment, the correlator of the square of the longitudinal component of spin at a site,<S Z 2>, and the internal energy of the system. It has been shown that, for all U > 0, the model yields two solutions, i.e., an antiferromagnetic insulator and a paramagnetic insulator, in which there are no single-electron quasi-particles at the Fermi level. The energy of the paramagnetic solution in the region of U < 1.1 is considerably less than that of the antiferromagnetic solution for the case of U > 1.1, we have the opposite situation.
