Abstract

In extended Kitaev models on the honeycomb lattice, off-diagonal interactions (e.g., the $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}},\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ terms) can give rise to non-Kitaev quantum spin liquids and several magnetically ordered phases. In the present paper, we dope holes to the system and study the resultant $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}K\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ model using mean-field theory. The interplay between the charge and spin degrees of freedom results in a rich phase diagram. Similar to doped cuprates, superconductors, pseudogap phases, Fermi liquid, strange metal and paramagnetic phase are generated. What is different is that, we obtain more than one superconducting phase (including a topological one) and more than one pseudogap phase no matter what the original spin state is. The Chern number of the topological superconductor is either $\ensuremath{\nu}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2$ or $\ensuremath{\nu}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$, depending on the ratio $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}/|K|$ in the spin channel. We further find that an intermediate in-plane magnetic field can slightly enlarge the size of the topological superconducting phase.

Phase diagrams of Kitaev models for arbitrary magnetic field orientations

F. Yılmaz, A. P. Kampf, Sungkit Yip

The Kitaev model is an exactly solvable quantum spin model within the language of constrained real fermions. In spite of numerous studies for magnetic fields along special orientations, there is a limited amount of knowledge on the complete field-angle characterization, which can provide valuable information on the existence of fractionalized excitations. For this purpose, we first study the pure ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kitaev models for arbitrary external magnetic field directions via a mean-field theory, showing that there are many topological phases with different (or zero) Chern numbers, depending on the magnetic field strength and orientations. However, a realistic description of the candidate Kitaev materials, within the edge-sharing octahedra paradigm, requires additional coupling terms, including a large off-diagonal term $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$ along with possible anisotropic corrections ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{p}$. It is therefore not sufficient to rely on the topological properties of the bare Kitaev model as the basis for the observed thermal Hall-conductivity signals, and an understanding of these extended Kitaev models with a complete field response is demanded. Starting from the zero-field phase diagram of $\mathrm{K}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}_{p}$ models, we identify, besides the Kitaev spin liquid phase, antiferromagnetic zigzag, ferromagnetic phases, as well as an unusual Kitaev(-$\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}$) spin liquid phase. The magnetic field response of these phases for arbitrary field orientations provides a remarkably rich phase diagram. For an extended parameter range and just above the critical field where the zigzag phase is suppressed, there is an intermediate phase region with suppressed energy gaps and substantial spin fractionalization. To comply our findings with experiments, we also reproduce a large asymmetry in the extent of this intermediate phases specifically for the two different field directions $\ensuremath{\theta}=\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{60}^{o}$ with respect to the normal to the plane of the honeycomb lattice.

Emergent magnetic order in the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model in a [111] field

Will Holdhusen, Daniel Huerga, Gerardo Ortíz

The Kitaev spin liquid, stabilized as the ground state of the Kitaev honeycomb model, is a paradigmatic example of a topological ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ quantum spin liquid. The fate of the Kitaev spin liquid in presence of an external magnetic field is at present, a subject of intense scrutiny due to recent experimental signatures pointing to a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ topological phase in certain materials, as well as theoretical studies predicting the emergence of a quantum spin liquid phase of debated nature. In this work, we employ hierarchical mean-field theory, a method based on the use of clusters preserving relevant symmetries and short-range quantum correlations, to investigate the quantum phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Kitaev's model in a [111] magnetic field. By using clusters of 24 sites, we predict that the Kitaev spin liquid transits through two intermediate phases, characterized by emerging stripe and chiral orders, respectively, before entering the trivial partially polarized phase, differing from previous studies. We assess our results by performing exact diagonalization and computing the scaling of different observables, including the many-body Chern number and other topological quantities, thus establishing hierarchical mean-field theory as a method to study models of frustrated quantum magnetism potentially hosting topological quantum spin liquids.

Exact chiral spin liquids and mean-field perturbations of gamma matrix models on the ruby lattice

Seth Whitsitt, Victor Chua, Gregory A. Fiete

We theoretically studied an exactly solvable gamma matrix generalization of the Kitaev spin model on the ruby lattice, which is a honeycomb lattice with 'expanded' vertices and links. We find that this model displays an exceptionally rich phase diagram that includes (i) gapless phases with stable spin Fermi surfaces, (ii) gapless phases with low-energy Dirac cones and quadratic band touching points and (iii) gapped phases with finite Chern numbers possessing the values ±4,±3,±2 and ±1. The model is then generalized to include Ising-like interactions that break the exact solvability of the model in a controlled manner. When these terms are dominant, they lead to a trivial Ising ordered phase which is shown to be adiabatically connected to a large coupling limit of the exactly solvable phase. In the limit where these interactions are weak, we treat them within mean-field theory and present the resulting phase diagrams. We discuss the nature of the transitions between various phases. Our results show the richness of possible ground states in closely related magnetic systems.

One Proximate Kitaev Spin Liquid in the K − J − Γ Model on the Honeycomb Lattice

Jiucai Wang, Bruce Normand, Zheng-Xin Liu

In addition to the Kitaev (K) interaction, candidate Kitaev materials also possess Heisenberg (J) and off-diagonal symmetric (Γ) couplings. We investigate the quantum (S=1/2) K-J-Γ model on the honeycomb lattice by a variational Monte Carlo method. In addition to the "generic" Kitaev spin liquid (KSL), we find that there is just one proximate KSL (PKSL) phase, while the rest of the phase diagram contains different magnetically ordered states. The PKSL is a gapless Z_{2} state with 14 Majorana cones, which in contrast to the KSL has a gapless spin response. In a magnetic field applied normal to the honeycomb plane, it realizes two of Kitaev's gapped chiral spin-liquid phases, of which one is non-Abelian with Chern number ν=5 and the other is Abelian with ν=4. These two phases could be distinguished by their thermal Hall conductance.

Hole propagation in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model: From quasiparticles in quantum Néel states to non-Fermi liquid in the Kitaev phase

Fabien Trousselet, Peter Horsch, Andrzej M. Oleś +1 more

We explore with exact diagonalization the propagation of a single hole in four magnetic phases of the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$-like Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice: the N\'eel antiferromagnetic, stripe, zigzag, and Kitaev spin-liquid phases. We find coherent propagation of spin-polaron quasiparticles in the antiferromagnetic phase by a mechanism similar to that in the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model for high-${T}_{c}$ cuprates. In the stripe and zigzag phases clear quasiparticles features appear in spectral functions of those propagators where holes are created and annihilated on one sublattice, while they remain largely hidden in those spectral functions that correspond to photoemission experiments. As the most surprising result, we find a totally incoherent spectral weight distribution for the spectral function of a hole moving in the Kitaev spin-liquid phase in the strong-coupling regime $t\ensuremath{\gg}J$ relevant for iridates. At intermediate coupling the finite systems calculation reveals a well-defined quasiparticle at the $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$ point; however, we find that the gapless spin excitations wipe out quasiparticles at finite momenta. Also for this more subtle case we conclude that in the thermodynamic limit the lightly doped Kitaev liquid phase does not support quasiparticle states in the neighborhood of $\ensuremath{\Gamma}$, and therefore yields a non-Fermi liquid, contrary to earlier suggestions based on slave-boson studies. These observations are supported by the presented study of the dynamic spin-structure factor in the Kitaev spin liquid regime.

Topological and magnetic phase transitions in the bilayer Kitaev-Ising model

Aayush Vijayvargia, Urban F. P. Seifert, Onur Erten

We investigate the phase diagram of a bilayer Kitaev honeycomb model with Ising interlayer interactions, deriving effective models via perturbation theory and performing Majorana mean-field theory calculations. We show that a diverse array of magnetic and topological phase transitions occur, depending on the direction of the interlayer Ising interaction and the relative sign of Kitaev interactions. When two layers have the same sign of the Kitaev interaction, a first-order transition from a Kitaev spin liquid to a magnetically ordered state takes place. The magnetic order points along the Ising axis and it is (anti)ferromagnetic for (anti)ferromagnetic Kitaev interactions. However, when two layers have opposite signs of the Kitaev interaction, we observe a notable weakening of magnetic ordering tendencies and the Kitaev spin liquid survives up to a remarkably larger interlayer exchange. Our mean-field analysis suggests the emergence of an intermediate gapped ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin-liquid state, which eventually becomes unstable upon vison condensation. The confined phase is described by a highly frustrated ${120}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ compass model. We furthermore use perturbation theory to study the model with the Ising axis pointing along the $\stackrel{\ifmmode \hat{}\else \^{}\fi{}}{z}$ axis or lying in the $xy$ plane. In both cases, our analysis reveals the formation of one-dimensional Ising chains, which remain decoupled in perturbation theory, resulting in a subextensive ground-state degeneracy. Our results highlight the interplay between topological order and magnetic ordering tendencies in bilayer quantum spin liquids.
