Abstract

Quantum phenomena appear in a macroscopic scale in Bose-Einstein condensates. The Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation describes the dynamics of the weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensates. The GP equation has a form of the Schroedinger equation with self-interaction. The coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations are used to describe some mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates. In this paper, we will show some numerical results of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations without self-interaction, which has a form of nonlinearly-coupled Schroedinger equations. We demonstrate that the macroscopic oscillation and the interference of two quantum wave packets decay in time owing to mutual interaction, which is analogous to the decoherence in quantum mechanics of many particles.

Dynamics of Macroscopic Wave Packet Passing through Double Slits: Role of Gravity and Nonlinearity

Katsuhiro Nakamura, Naofumi Nakazono, Taro Ando

Using the nonlinear Schroedinger equation (Gross-Pitaevskii equation), the dynamics of a macroscopic wave packet for Bose-Einstein condensates falling through double slits is analyzed. This problem is identified with a search for the fate of a soliton showing a head-on collision with a hard-walled obstacle of finite size. We explore the splitting of the wave packet and its reorganization to form an interference pattern. Particular attention is paid to the role of gravity (g) and repulsive nonlinearity (u_0) in the fringe pattern. The peak-to-peak distance in the fringe pattern and the number of interference peaks are found to be proportional to g^(-1/2) and u_0^(1/2)g^(1/4), respectively. We suggest a way of designing an experiment under controlled gravity and nonlinearity.

Mean-Field Dynamics of a Two-Mode Bose-Einstein Condensate Subject to Decoherence

B. Cui, Wu Song-Lin, YI Xue-Xi

We discuss the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential subject to decoherence (or particle loss). Starting from the full many-body dynamics described by the master equation, an effective Gross-Pitaevskii-like equation is derived in the mean-field approximation. By numerically solving the GP equation, we find that macroscopic quantum self-trapping disappears for strong decoherence, while generalized self-trapping occurs under weak decoherence. The fixed points have been calculated, and we find that an abrupt change from elliptic to an attractor and a repeller occurs, reflecting the metastable behavior of the system around these points.

Interference of Three Bose-Einstein Condensates in One-dimensional Time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii Equation

SU Ming-hui

Symplectic method is applied to solve 1D time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii(GP) equation numerically.Interference of three Bose-Einstein condensates(BECs) is investigated with or without a trapping potential.Elastic collisions of BECs occur as trapping potential exists. If trapping potential is zero at t=0,interference of three BECs is observed and oscillation of probability density is found.

Gravity, Bose-Einstein Condensates and Gross-Pitaevskii Equation

Patrick Das Gupta

We explore the effect of mutual gravitational interaction between ultra-cold gas atoms on the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC). Small-amplitude oscillation of BEC is studied by applying variational technique to reduce the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, with gravity included, to the equation of motion of a particle moving in a potential. According to our analysis, if the s-wave scattering length can be tuned to zero using Feshbach resonance for future BEC with occupation numbers as high as ≈10 20 , there exists a critical ground state occupation number above which the BEC is unstable, provided that its constituents interact with a 1/r 3 gravity at short scales.

Wave-packet dynamics for a coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation

Sukla Pal, Jayanta K. Bhattacharjee

Starting from coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) describing the dynamics of binary Bose Einstein Condensate (BEC), we have explored the dynamics of the width of initial wave-packets by following two different approaches. We have followed a recent coherent state based approach and have shown that in binary BEC the oscillation of the width of the wave packet can give rise to instability at a certain condition. Alternately we have proceeded by considering the trial ground state solutions for both the species and through the Ehrenfest theorem shown the existence of an instability which may lead to phase separation of the two species.

Macroscopic quantum fluctuations in the Josephson dynamics of two weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates

Augusto Smerzi, S. Raghavan

We study analytically the quantum corrections to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for two weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates. The goals are (1) to investigate dynamical regimes at the borderline between the classical and quantum behavior of the bosonic field, and (2) to search macroscopic quantum coherence phenomena not observable with other superfluid/superconducting systems. Quantum fluctuations renormalize the classical Josephson oscillation frequencies. Large amplitude phase oscillations are modulated, exhibiting collapses and revivals. We describe an interwell oscillation mode with a vanishing (ensemble averaged) mean value of the observables, but with oscillating mean square fluctuations. We finally discuss the limit in which the classical Gross-Pitaevskii (Josephson) dynamics is recovered.
