Ergodic equilibration of Rényi entropies and replica wormholes

Abstract

Abstract We study the behavior of Rényi entropies for pure states from standard assumptions about chaos in the high-energy spectrum of the Hamiltonian of a many-body quantum system. We compute the exact long-time averages of Rényi entropies and show that the quantum noise around these values is exponentially suppressed in the microcanonical entropy. For delocalized states over the microcanonical band, the long-time average approximately reproduces the equilibration proposal of H. Liu and S. Vardhan, with extra structure arising at the order of non-planar permutations. We analyze the equilibrium approximation for AdS/CFT systems describing black holes in equilibrium in a box. We extend our analysis to the situation of an evaporating black hole, and comment on the possible gravitational description of the new terms in our approximation.

Entanglement Entropies of Equilibrated Pure States in Quantum Many-Body Systems and Gravity

Hong Liu, Shreya Vardhan

A universal approximation for the Renyi entropies of equilibrated pure states is presented, helping to understand how the process of thermalization is consistent with unitarity in quantum chaotic systems and models of evaporating black holes.

Decoherence in Conformal Field Theory

Adolfo del Campo, Tadashi Takayanagi

Abstract Noise sources are ubiquitous in Nature and give rise to a description of quantum systems in terms of stochastic Hamiltonians. Decoherence dominates the noise-averaged dynamics and leads to dephasing and the decay of coherences in the eigenbasis of the fluctuating operator. For energy-diffusion processes stemming from fluctuations of the system Hamiltonian the characteristic decoherence time is shown to be proportional to the heat capacity. We analyze the decoherence dynamics of entangled CFTs and characterize the dynamics of the purity, and logarithmic negativity, that are shown to decay monotonically as a function of time. The converse is true for the quantum Renyi entropies. From the short-time asymptotics of the purity, the decoherence rate is identified and shown to be proportional to the central charge. The fixed point characterizing long times of evolution depends on the presence degeneracies in the energy spectrum. We show how information loss associated with decoherence can be attributed to its leakage to an auxiliary environment and discuss how gravity duals of decoherence dynamics in holographic CFTs looks like in AdS/CFT. We find that the inner horizon region of eternal AdS black hole is highly squeezed due to decoherence.

The entanglement entropy of typical pure states and replica wormholes

Erez Y. Urbach

Abstract In a 1+1 dimensional QFT on a circle, we consider the von Neumann entanglement entropy of an interval for typical pure states. As a function of the interval size, we expect a Page curve in the entropy. We employ a specific ensemble average of pure states, and show how to write the ensemble-averaged Rényi entropy as a path integral on a singular replicated geometry. Assuming that the QFT is a conformal field theory with a gravitational dual, we then use the holographic dictionary to obtain the Page curve. For short intervals the thermal saddle is dominant. For large intervals (larger than half of the circle size), the dominant saddle connects the replicas in a non-trivial way using the singular boundary geometry. The result extends the ‘island conjecture’ to a non-evaporating setting.

Replica Rényi wormholes and generalised modular entropy in JT gravity

Timothy J. Hollowood, S. Prem Kumar, Luke C. Piper

A bstract We consider the problem of computing semi-classical Rényi entropies of CFT on AdS 2 backgrounds in JT gravity with nongravitating baths, for general replica number n . Away from the n → 1 limit, the backreaction of the CFT twist fields on the geometry is nontrivial. For one twist field insertion and general n , we show that the quantum extremal surface (QES) condition involves extremisation of the generalised modular entropy , consistent with Dong’s generalisation of the Ryu-Takayanagi formula for general n . For multiple QES we describe replica wormhole geometries using the theory of Fuchsian uniformisation, explicitly working out the analytically tractable case of the n = 2 double trumpet wormhole geometry. We determine the off-shell dependence of the gravitational action on the QES locations and boundary map. In a factorisation limit, corresponding to late times, we are able to relate this action functional to area terms given by the value of the JT dilaton at the (off-shell) QES locations, with computable corrections. Applied to the two-sided eternal black hole, we find the n -dependent Page times for Rényi enropies in the high temperature limit.

Geometry and quantum noise

J.L.F. Barbón, E. Rabinovici

Abstract We study the fine structure of long‐time quantum noise in correlation functions of AdS/CFT systems. Under standard assumptions of quantum chaos for the dynamics and the observables, we estimate the size of exponentially small oscillations and trace them back to geometrical features of the bulk system. The noise level is highly suppressed by the amount of dynamical chaos and the amount of quantum impurity in the states. This implies that, despite their missing on the details of Poincaré recurrences, ‘virtual’ thermal AdS phases do control the overall noise amplitude even at high temperatures where the thermal ensemble is dominated by large AdS black holes. We also study EPR correlations and find that, in contrast to the behavior of large correlation peaks, their noise level is the same in TFD states and in more general highly entangled states.

<!--HTML-->Information-theoretic quantities such as Renyi entropies show a remarkable universality in their late-time behaviour across a variety of chaotic systems. Understanding how such common features emerge from very different microscopic dynamics remains an important challenge. In this talk, I will address this question in a general class of Brownian models with a variety of different microscopic couplings. In any such model, the Lorentzian time-evolution of the n-th Renyi entropy can be mapped to a transition amplitude with a Euclidean Hamiltonian on 2n copies of the system. Using the structure of the ground states of the Euclidean Hamiltonian, we derive an expression for the saturation value of the n-th Renyi entropy in terms of an equilibrium density matrix, consistent with a general proposal called the equilibrium approximation. In non-integrable models without conserved quantities in (1+1) dimensions, we find that the spectrum of the Euclidean Hamiltonian relevant for the second Renyi entropy and OTOCs has two degenerate ground states, and a well-defined one-particle band consisting of plane waves of domain walls between them. The one-particle band gives rise to the membrane formula for entanglement dynamics, with the velocity-dependent membrane tension determined by its dispersion relation. This structure provides an understanding of entanglement dynamics in terms of a universal set of gapped modes, analogous to the gapless modes which govern hydrodynamic behaviour of conserved charge densities.
