Abstract

Abstract We numerically study the breathing dynamics induced by collision between bright solitons in one-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensates with strong dipole–dipole interaction. This breathing phenomenon is closely related to the after-collision short-lived attraction of solitons induced by the dipolar effect. The initial phase difference of solitons leads to the asymmetric dynamics after collision, which is manifested in their different breathing amplitude, breathing frequency, and atom number. We clarify that the asymmetry of breathing frequency is directly induced by the asymmetric atom number, rather than initial phase difference. Moreover, a collision between breathing solitons can produce new after-two-collision breathing solitons, whose breathing amplitude can be adjusted and reaches the maximum (or minimum) when the peak–peak (or dip–dip) collision happens.

Special breathing structures induced by bright solitons collision in a binary dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates

We numerically investigate the breathing dynamics induced by collision between bright solitons in a binary dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates, whose dipole–dipole interaction and contact interaction are attractive. We identify three special breathing structures, such as snakelike special breathing structure, mixed breathing structure, and divide breathing structure. The characteristics of these breathing structures can be described by breathing frequency Ω, maximum breathing amplitude A and lifetime τ, which can be manipulated by atomic number Ni and interspecies scattering length a 12. Meanwhile, the above breathing structures can realize the process of quasi-transition with a reasonable Ni and a 12. Additionally, the collision of two special breathing structures also can bring more abundant breathing dynamics. Our results provide a reference for the study of soliton interactions and deepen the understanding of soliton properties in a binary dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates.

Merging and splitting dynamics between two bright solitons in dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates*

Xin Li, Peng Gao, Zhan-Ying Yang +1 more

We numerically study the interaction dynamics of two bright solitons with zero initial velocities in the one-dimensional dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates. Under different dipolar strengths, the two bright solitons can merge into a breathing wave, and then split or propagate constantly after several oscillating periods. We quantitatively study the breathing frequency of wave after merging and the asymmetry property of solitons after splitting, and analyze their formation mechanism by the system’s energy evolution. Also, the change of initial phase difference brings distinct effects on the soliton interaction. Our results provide insight into the new dynamical phenomena in dipolar systems and enrich the understanding for interaction between dipolar solitons.

Dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional bright and vortex solitons of a dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate with repulsive atomic interaction

Luis E. Young-S., Paulsamy Muruganandam, Sadhan K. Adhikari

By numerical and variational analysis of the three-dimensional Gross–Pitaevskii equation, we study the formation and dynamics of bright and vortex-bright solitons in a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate for large repulsive atomic interactions. A phase diagram showing the region of stability of the solitons is obtained. We also study the dynamics of breathing oscillation of the solitons as well as the collision dynamics of two solitons. At large velocities the frontal collision is elastic and the two three-dimensional solitons pass through each other undeformed. Two solitons placed side by side at rest coalesce to form a stable bound soliton molecule due to dipolar attraction. Movie clips illustrating collision and molecule-formation dynamics of two bright and vortex-bright solitons are included.

Collisions of anisotropic two-dimensional bright solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Rüdiger Eichler, Damir Zajec, Patrick Köberle +2 more

We investigate the coherent collision of anisotropic quasi-two-dimensional bright solitons in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. Our analysis is based on the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and we use the split-operator method for the grid calculations and the time-dependent variational principle with an Ansatz of coupled Gaussian functions to calculate the time evolution of the ground state. We compare the results of both approaches for collisions where initially the solitons are in the repelling side-by-side configuration and move towards each other with a specific momentum. We change the relative phases of the condensates, and introduce a total angular momentum by shifting the solitons in opposite directions along the polarization axis. Our calculations show that collisions result in breathing-mode-like excitations of the solitons.

Bright solitons in a quasi-one-dimensional reduced model of a dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate with repulsive short-range interactions

Emerson Chiquillo

We study the formation and dynamics of bright solitons in a quasi-one-dimensional reduced mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive short-range interactions. The study is carried out using a variational approximation and a numerical solution. Plots of chemical potential and root mean square (rms) size of solitons are obtained for the quasi-one-dimensional model of three different dipolar condensates of 52Cr, 168Er and 164Dy atoms. The results achieved are in good agreement with those produced by the full three-dimensional mean-field model of the condensate. We also study the dynamics of the collision of a train of two solitons in the quasi-one-dimensional model of every condensate above. At small velocities (zero or close to zero) the dynamics is attractive for a phase difference δ = 0, the solitons coalesce and these oscillate forming a bound soliton molecule. For a phase difference δ = π the effect is repulsive. At large velocities the collision is independent of the initial phase difference δ. This is quasi-elastic and the result is two quasi-solitons.

Two-dimensional bright and dark-in-bright dipolar Bose–Einstein condensate solitons on a one-dimensional optical lattice

S K Adhikari

Abstract We study the statics and dynamics of anisotropic, stable, bright and dark-in-bright dipolar quasi-two-dimensional Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) solitons on a one-dimensional (1D) optical-lattice (OL) potential. These solitons mobile in a plane perpendicular to a 1D OL trap can have both repulsive and attractive contact interactions. Dark-in-bright solitons are the excited states of bright solitons. The solitons, when subjected to a small perturbation, exhibit sustained breathing oscillation. Dark-in-bright solitons can be created by phase imprinting a bright soliton. At medium velocities the collision between two solitons is found to be quasi-elastic. Results are demonstrated by a numerical simulation of the three-dimensional mean-field Gross–Pitaevskii equation in three spatial dimensions employing realistic interaction parameters for a dipolar 164 Dy BEC.
