Abstract

This work completes the program started by I. Bialynicki-Birula and Z. Bialynicka-Birula [Uncertainty relation for photons, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 140401 (2012); Heisenberg uncertainty relation for photons, Phys. Rev. A 86, 022118 (2012); Heisenberg uncertainty relation for relativistic electrons, New J. Phys. 21, 073036 (2019)] to derive the Heisenberg uncertainty relation for relativistic particles. Sharp uncertainty relations for massive relativistic particles with spin 0 and spin 1 are derived. The main conclusion is that the uncertainty relations for relativistic bosons are markedly different from those for relativistic fermions. The uncertainty relations for bosons are based on the energy density. It is shown that the uncertainty relations based on the time component of the four-current, as we have done previously for electrons, are untenable because they lead to contradictions.

Heisenberg uncertainty relations for photons

Iwo Białynicki‐Birula, Zofia Białynicka-Birula

The idea to base the uncertainty relation for photons on the electromagnetic energy distribution in space enabled us to derive a sharp inequality that expresses the uncertainty relation [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 140401 (2012)]. An alternative version of the uncertainty relation derived in this paper is closer in spirit to the original Heisenberg relation because it employs the analog of the position operator for the photon---the center of the energy operator. The noncommutativity of the components of the center of the energy operator results in the increase of the bound $3\ensuremath{\hbar}/2$ in the standard Heisenberg uncertainty relation in three dimensions. This difference diminishes with the increase of the photon energy. In the infinite-momentum frame, the lower bound in the Heisenberg uncertainty relations for photons is the same as in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. A similar uncertainty relation is also derived for coherent photon beams. This relation has direct experimental consequences since it gives a precise relationship between the spectral composition of the laser beam and the minimal focal volume.

Heisenberg Form of Uncertainty Relations

Mohammed Yousif

This paper, deals with the uncertainty relation for photons. In [Phys.Rev.Let.108, 140401 (2012)], and [1] the uncertainty relation was obtained as a sharp inequality by using the energy distribution on space. The relation we obtain here is an alternative to the one given in [Phys.Rev.Let.108, 140401 (2012)] by the use of the position of the center of the energy operator. The fact that the components of the center is non commutative affected the right hand side of the Heisenberg inequality. But this resolved by the increase of the photon energy. Furthermore we study the uncertainty of Heisenberg with respect to angular momentum and Foureir. We end the paper by giving some examples.

Comment on “Uncertainty Relation for Photons”

Zhiyong Wang, Cai-Dong Xiong, Qi Qiu

In a recent interesting Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 140401 (2012)] I. Bialynicki-Birula and his coauthor have derived the uncertainty relation for the photons in three dimensions. However, some of their arguments are problematical, and this impacts their conclusion.

Heisenberg uncertainty relation for relativistic electrons

Iwo Białynicki‐Birula, Zofia Białynicka-Birula

Abstract The Heisenberg uncertainty relation is derived for relativistic electrons described by the Dirac equation. The standard nonrelativistic lower bound 3/2ℏ is attained only in the limit and the wave function that reproduces this value is singular. At the other end, in the ultrarelativistic limit, the bound is the same as that found before for photons.

Localization of relativistic particles and uncertainty relations

Daniel R. Terno

Localization of relativistic particles and their position-momentum uncertainty relations are not yet fully understood. We discuss two schemes of photon localization that are based on the energy density. One scheme produces a positive operator-valued measure for localization. It coincides with the number density operator and reproduces an effective $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}3$ polarization density matrix. Another scheme results in a probability distribution that is conditioned on the detection. In both schemes the uncertainty relations for transversal position and momentum approach the Heisenberg bound $\ensuremath{\Delta}p\ensuremath{\Delta}z=\frac{1}{2}\ensuremath{\hbar}$.

Uncertainty relations for the relativistic Jackiw-Nair anyon: A first-principles derivation

Joydeep Majhi, Subir Ghosh

Abstract In this paper we have explicitly computed the position-position and position-momentum (Heisenberg) uncertainty relations for the model of relativistic particles with arbitrary spin, proposed by Jackiw and Nair (J ackiw R. and N air V. P. Phys. Rev. D , 43 (1991) 1933) as a model for anyon, in a purely quantum mechanical framework. This supports (via Schwarz inequality) the conjecture that anyons live in a 2-dimensional non-commutative space. We have computed the non-trivial uncertainty relation between anyon coordinates, , using the recently constructed anyon wave function (M ajhi J. et al. , Phys. Rev. Lett. , 123 (2019) 164801), in the framework of B ialynicki -B irula I. and B ialynicka -B irula Z., New J. Phys. , 21 (2019) 07306. We also compute the Heisenberg (position-momentum) uncertainty relation for anyons. Lastly we show that the identical formalism when applied to electrons, yield a trivial position uncertainty relation, consistent with their living in a 3-dimensional commutative space.
