On Existence of Ground States in the Spin Boson Model

Abstract

Abstract We show the existence of ground states in the massless spin boson model without any infrared regularization. Our proof is non-perturbative and relies on a compactness argument. It works for arbitrary values of the coupling constant under the hypothesis that the second derivative of the ground state energy as a function of a constant external magnetic field is bounded.

Existence of Ground States in the Infrared-Critial Spin Boson Model

Hinrichs, Benjamin

We review recent results on the existence of ground states for the infrared-critical spin boson model, which describes the interaction of a massless bosonic field with a two-state quantum system. Explicitly, we derive a critical coupling $λ_{\mathsf c}>0$ such that the spin boson model exhibits a ground state for coupling constants $λ$ with $|λ|<λ_{\mathsf c}$. The proof combines a Feynman-Kac-Nelson formula for the spin boson model with external magnetic field, a 1D-Ising model correlation bound and a compactness argument in Fock space. Elaborating on the connection to a long-range 1D-Ising model, we briefly discuss the conjecture that the spin boson model does not have a ground state at large coupling. This note is based on joint work with David Hasler and Oliver Siebert.

On generalized spin-boson models with singular perturbations

Toshimitsu Takaesu

In this paper we consider generalized spin-boson models with singular perturbations. It is proven that under the infrared regularity condition Hamiltonians have the unique ground state for sufficiently small values of coupling constants. In addition it is shown that the asymptotic creation and annihilation operators of massless boson field exist.

On the Spin-Boson Model(Quantum Stochastic Analysis and Related Fields)

Asao Arai, Masao Hirokawa

The existence and uniqueness of ground states of the spin-boson Hamiltonian $H_{\mathrm{S}\mathrm{B}}$ are con- sidered. The main results in the case of massive bosons include: $(\mathrm{i})(\mathrm{e}\mathrm{x}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{t}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{n}\mathrm{c}\mathrm{e})$ there exists a ground state without restriction for the strength of the coupling constant; $(\mathrm{i}\mathrm{i})(\mathrm{u}\mathrm{n}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{q}\mathrm{u}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{n}\mathrm{e}\mathrm{s}\mathrm{s})$ under a mild (nonperturbative) condition for the parameters contained in $H_{\mathrm{S}\mathrm{B}},$ $H_{\mathrm{S}\mathrm{B}}$ has only one ground state ; (iii) (degeneracy) under a certain condition for the parameters of $H_{\mathrm{S}\mathrm{B}}$which is weaker than that of (ii), the number of the ground states is at most two.In the case of massless bosons, the existence of a ground state of $H_{\mathrm{S}\mathrm{B}}$ is shown as a limit of ground states of the massive case. The methods used are nonperturbative.A generalization of the model is proposed.

On the Ising Phase Transition in the Infrared-Divergent Spin Boson Model

Volker Betz, Hinrichs, Benjamin, Mino Nicola Kraft +1 more

We prove absence of ground states in the infrared-divergent spin boson model at large coupling. Our key argument reduces the proof to verifying long range order in the dual one-dimensional continuum Ising model, i.e., to showing that the respective two point function is lower bounded by a strictly positive constant. We can then use known results from percolation theory to establish long range order at large coupling. Combined with the known existence of ground states at small coupling, our result proves that the spin boson model undergoes a phase transition with respect to the coupling strength. We also present an expansion for the vacuum overlap of the spin boson ground state in terms of the Ising $n$-point functions, which implies that the phase transition is unique, i.e., that there is a critical coupling constant below which a ground state exists and above which none can exist.

No Spin-Localization Phase Transition in the Spin-Boson Model without Local Field

Tao Liu, Mang Feng, Lei Li +2 more

We explore the spin-boson model in a special case, i.e., with zero local field. In contrast to previous studies, we find no possibility for quantum phase transition (QPT) happening between the localized and delocalized phases, and the behavior of the model can be fully characterized by the even or odd parity as well as the parity breaking, instead of the QPT, owned by the ground state of the system. The parity breaking mentioned in our case is completely different from the spontaneously broken symmetry relevant to the conventionally defined QPT in previous studies. Our analytical treatment about the eigensolution of the ground state of the model presents for the first time a rigorous proof of no-degeneracy for the ground state of the model, which is independent of the bath type, the degrees of freedom of the bath and the calculation precision. We argue that the QPT mentioned previously appears due to incorrect employment of the ground state of the model and/or unreasonable treatment of the infrared divergence existing in the spectral functions for Ohmic and sub-Ohmic dissipations.

Sub-Ohmic spin-boson model with off-diagonal coupling: Ground state properties

Zhiguo Lü, Liwei Duan, Xin Li +2 more

We have carried out analytical and numerical studies of the spin-boson model in the sub-ohmic regime with the influence of both the diagonal and the off-diagonal coupling accounted for, via the Davydov D1 variational ansatz. While a second-order phase transition is known to be exhibited by this model in the presence of diagonal coupling only, we demonstrate the emergence of a discontinuous first order phase transition upon incorporation of the off-diagonal coupling. A plot of the ground state energy versus magnetization highlights the discontinuous nature of the transition between the isotropic (zero magnetization) state and nematic (finite magnetization) phases. We have also calculated the entanglement entropy and a discontinuity found at a critical coupling strength further supports the discontinuous crossover in the spin-boson model in the presence of off-diagonal coupling. It is further revealed via a canonical transformation approach that for the special case of identical exponents for the spectral densities of the diagonal and the off-diagonal coupling, there exists a continuous crossover from a single localized phase to doubly degenerate localized phase with differing magnetizations.
