Deterministic preparation of nonclassical states of light in cavity optomechanics

Abstract

Cavity-optomechanics is an ideal platform for the generation non-Gaussian quantum states due to the anharmonic interaction between the light field and the mechanical oscillator, but it is exactly this interaction that also impedes the preparation of pure states of the light field. In this paper we derive a driving protocol that helps to exploit the anharmonic interaction for state preparation and that ensures that the state of the light field remains close to pure. This shall enable the deterministic preparation of photon Fock states or coherent superpositions thereof.

Deterministic quantum superpositions and Fock states of mechanical oscillators via quantum interference in single-photon cavity optomechanics

Huatang Tan

In this paper, we propose a scheme for deterministically preparing a quantum superposition $|{\ensuremath{\psi}}_{s}{\ensuremath{\rangle}}_{b}={C}_{0}{|0\ensuremath{\rangle}}_{b}+{C}_{\mathcal{N}}{|\mathcal{N}\ensuremath{\rangle}}_{b}$ between vacuum and an arbitrary Fock state ${|\mathcal{N}\ensuremath{\rangle}}_{b}$ of mechanical oscillators via strong single-photon optomechanical coupling. We consider an optomechanical cavity which contains a Kerr medium and is driven by two lasers, with one laser tuned to the cavity resonance and the other to the $\mathcal{N}$th lower sideband of the cavity. The amplitudes ${C}_{0}$ and ${C}_{\mathcal{N}}$ are determined only by the drive strengths in the absence of mechanical damping and the approximate Fock state $|{\ensuremath{\psi}}_{s}{\ensuremath{\rangle}}_{b}\ensuremath{\approx}{|\mathcal{N}\ensuremath{\rangle}}_{b}$ can be obtained with appropriate relative strengths of the lasers. It is revealed that the superposition results from destructive quantum interference. The analytical results are confirmed by exact numerical calculation, and it is also shown that the nonclassical state is robust against thermal mechanical noise.

Deterministic preparation of highly non-classical quantum states of massive oscillators

Ludovico Latmiral, Florian Mintert

We present a scheme to deterministically prepare non-classical quantum states of a massive mirror including highly non-Gaussian states exhibiting sizeable negativity of the Wigner function. This is achieved by exploiting the non-linear light-matter interaction in an optomechanical cavity by driving the system with optimally designed frequency patterns. Our scheme reveals to be resilient against mechanical and optical damping, as well as mechanical thermal noise and imperfections in the driving scheme. Our proposal thus opens a promising route for table-top experiments to explore and exploit macroscopic quantum phenomena.

Dissipative optomechanical preparation of non-Gaussian mechanical entanglement

Gentil Dias de Moraes Neto, Víctor Montenegro

Entanglement had played a crucial role in developing frontier technologies as a critical resource, for instance, in quantum teleportation and quantum sensing schemes. Notably, thanks to the ability to cool down the vibrational modes of mechanical oscillators to its quantum regime, entanglement between mechanical modes and the production of nonclassical mechanical states have emerged as central resources for quantum technological applications. Thus, proposing deterministic schemes to achieve those tasks is of paramount importance. While the dominant scheme for bipartite mechanical entanglement involves Gaussian optomechanical interactions (linearized regime) to generate two-mode squeezed vacuum states, entangling two-modes exploiting the bare non-Gaussian optomechanical interaction (nonlinear strong single-photon regime) remains less covered. This work proposes an on-demand scheme to engineer phononic non-Gaussian bipartite entanglement in the nonlinear regime by exploiting cavity dissipation. Interestingly, our protocol (operating in the resolved sideband and photon blockade regime) renders the possibility of achieving a high degree of steady-state entanglement. We further show that our deterministic scheme is robust in the presence of decoherence and temperature within state-of-the-art optomechanics, along with the required conditions to obtain non-Gaussianity of the achieved bipartite mechanical steady-state.

Dissipative phonon-Fock-state production in strong nonlinear optomechanics

G. D. de Moraes Neto, Víctor Montenegro, Victor Fernandes Teizen +1 more

We put forward a deterministic dissipative protocol to prepare phonon Fock states in nonlinear quantum optomechanical devices. The system is composed of a mechanical mode interacting with an optical field via radiation pressure, whereas the light mode is laser driven in the resolved blue-sideband regime. To keep our results tractable, we switch to an interaction picture in a displaced basis, where the effective Hamiltonian exhibits the selective photon-phonon interaction explicitly. After proper parameter adjustment and similarly to cavity-cooling schemes, the quantum evolution allows steering of the mechanical degree of freedom to the desired Fock state by directing the optical excitations dynamically towards the target phonon state. The numerical results, including decoherence on both the mechanical and the optical degrees of freedom, prove to be quite robust in the good- and bad-cavity regimes, with fidelities exceeding 95%. Finally, characterization of the achieved nonclassicality, as well as the limitations and feasibility of our protocol under experimental parameters, is also discussed.

Deterministic generation of large Fock states in coupled optical-optomechanical cavities

Xinchen Zhang, Nuo Wang, Zhaohua Tian +2 more

The preparation of Fock states, as a fundamental problem in the research of quantum optics and quantum information, still faces challenges in achieving both unconditional preparation and large photon numbers. Here, we study the deterministic generation of large Fock states through the nonlinear interaction in coupled optical-optomechanical cavities. Under the condition that the mechanical frequency is twice the optical coupling strength, and much larger than the optomechanical coupling strength, there occurs a nonlinear interaction among two optical eigenmodes and the mechanical mode, i.e., a photon is annihilated, accompanied by the creation of another photon together with a phonon, and vice versa. It is analytically proved that, through this interaction, Fock states | n 〉 and | 1 〉 will generate | n + 1 〉 at specific evolution times if the mechanical mode is initially on the ground state. In addition, numerical results show that Fock states | n 〉 and | p 〉 can also generate | n + p 〉 with the fidelities larger than 94% ( 1 < p ≤ n ≤ 40 ). The proposed mechanism achieves deterministic generation of large Fock states, which can be applied to quantum metrology and quantum simulation.
