Abstract

We propose a unified scheme to identify phase transitions out of the ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ Abelian topological order, including the transition to a non-Abelian chiral spin liquid. Using loop gas and and string gas states [H.-Y. Lee, R. Kaneko, T. Okubo, and N. Kawashima, Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 087203 (2019)] on the star lattice Kitaev model as an example, we compute the overlap of minimally entangled states through transfer matrices. We demonstrate that, similar to the anyon condensation, continuous deformation of a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$-injective projected entangled-pair state (PEPS) also allows us to study the transition between Abelian and non-Abelian topological orders. We show that the charge and flux anyons defined in the Abelian phase transmute into the $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ anyon in the non-Abelian topological order. Furthermore, we show that contrary to the claim in [Phys. Rev. B 101, 035140 (2020)], both the LG and SG states have infinite correlation length in the non-Abelian regime, consistent with the no-go theorem that a chiral PEPS has a gapless parent Hamiltonian.

Abelian and non-Abelian chiral spin liquids in a compact tensor network representation

Hyun‐Yong Lee, Ryui Kaneko, Tsuyoshi Okubo +1 more

We provide new insights into the Abelian and non-Abelian chiral Kitaev spin liquids on the star lattice using the recently proposed loop gas (LG) and string gas states [Lee, Kaneko, Okubo, and Kawashima, Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 087203 (2019)]. Those are compactly represented in the language of the tensor network. By optimizing only one or two variational parameters, accurate ansatze are found in the whole phase diagram of the Kitaev model on the star lattice. In particular, the variational energy of the LG state becomes exact (within machine precision) at two limits in the model, and the criticality at one of those is analytically derived from the LG feature. It reveals that the Abelian chiral spin liquids (CSLs) are well demonstrated by the short-ranged LG whereas the non-Abelian CSLs are adiabatically connected to the critical LG where the macroscopic loops appear. Furthermore, by constructing the minimally entangled states and exploiting their entanglement spectrum and entropy, we identify the nature of anyons and the chiral edge modes in the non-Abelian phase with the Ising conformal field theory.

Study of topological phase transitions from a non-Abelian topological state and its Galois conjugate through condensation and confinement order parameters

Wen-Tao Xu, Norbert Schuch

Topological phases exhibit unconventional order that cannot be detected by any local order parameter. In the framework of Projected Entangled Pair States(PEPS), topological order is characterized by an entanglement symmetry of the local tensor which describes the model. This symmetry can take the form of a tensor product of group representations, or in the more general case a correlated symmetry action in the form of a Matrix Product Operator(MPO), which encompasses all string-net models. Among other things, these entanglement symmetries allow for the description of ground states and anyon excitations. Recently, the idea has been put forward to use those symmetries and the anyonic objects they describe as order parameters for probing topological phase transitions, and the applicability of this idea has been demonstrated for Abelian groups. In this paper, we extend this construction to the domain of non-Abelian models with MPO symmetries, and use it to study the breakdown of topological order in the double Fibonacci (DFib) string-net and its Galois conjugate, the non-hermitian double Yang-Lee (DYL) string-net. We start by showing how to construct topological order parameters for condensation and deconfinement of anyons using the MPO symmetries. Subsequently, we set up interpolations from the DFib and the DYL model to the trivial phase, and show that these can be mapped to certain restricted solid on solid(RSOS) models, which are equivalent to the $((5\pm\sqrt{5})/2)$-state Potts model, respectively. The known exact solutions of the statistical models allow us to locate the critical points, and to predict the critical exponents for the order parameters. We complement this by numerical study of the phase transitions, which fully confirms our theoretical predictions; remarkably, we find that both models exhibit a duality between the order parameters for condensation and deconfinement.

Characterization of topological phase transitions from a non-Abelian topological state and its Galois conjugate through condensation and confinement order parameters

Topological phases exhibit unconventional order that cannot be detected by any local order parameter. In the framework of projected entangled pair states, topological order is characterized by an entanglement symmetry of the local tensor that describes the model. This symmetry can take the form of a tensor product of group representations [for quantum double models $D(G)$ of a group $G]$, or in the more general case a correlated symmetry action in the form of a matrix product operator (MPO), which encompasses all string-net models, including those that are not quantum double models. Among other things, these entanglement symmetries allow for the succinct description of ground states and topological excitations (anyons). Recently, the idea has been put forward to use those symmetries and the anyonic objects they describe as order parameters for probing topological phase transitions, and the applicability of this idea has been demonstrated for Abelian groups. In this paper, we extend this construction to the domain of non-Abelian models with MPO symmetries, and we use it to study the breakdown of topological order in the double Fibonacci (DFib) string-net model and its Galois conjugate, namely the non-Hermitian double Yang-Lee (DYL) string-net model. Subsequently, we set up interpolations from the DFib and the DYL model to the trivial phase, and we show that these can be mapped to certain restricted solid on solid (RSOS) models, which are equivalent to the $[(5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\sqrt{5})/2]$-state Potts model, respectively. Moreover, the order parameter for condensation maps to the RSOS order parameter. The known exact solutions of the statistical models subsequently allow us to locate the critical points of the models, and to predict the critical exponents for the order parameters from conformal field theory. We complement this by numerical study of the phase transitions, which fully confirms our theoretical predictions; remarkably, we find that both models exhibit a duality between the behavior of order parameters for condensation and deconfinement.

Determining topological order from infinite projected entangled pair states

Anna Francuz, Jacek Dziarmaga, Guifré Vidal +1 more

We present a method of extracting information about the topological order from the ground state of a strongly correlated two-dimensional system computed with the infinite projected entangled pair state (iPEPS). For topologically ordered systems, the iPEPS wrapped on a torus becomes a superposition of degenerate, locally indistinguishable ground states. Projectors in the form of infinite matrix product operators onto states with well-defined anyon flux are used to compute topological $S$ and $T$ matrices (encoding mutual and self-statistics of emergent anyons). The algorithm is shown to be robust against a perturbation driving string-net toric code across a phase transition to a ferromagnetic phase. Our approach provides accurate results near quantum phase transition, where the correlation length is prohibitively large for other numerical methods. Moreover, we used numerically optimized iPEPS describing the ground state of the Kitaev honeycomb model in the toric code phase and obtained topological data in excellent agreement with theoretical prediction.

Complete characterization of non-Abelian topological phase transitions and detection of anyon splitting with projected entangled pair states

Wen-Tao Xu, José Garre-Rubio, Norbert Schuch

Topological phases - systems with a global ordering in the entanglement - exhibit exotic excitations known as anyons which can display highly nontrivial (non-Abelian) statistics. Through transitions between such phases, these anyons can undergo rather surprising changes. Perhaps most surprisingly, one anyon can split into two or more anyons, some of which might condense or become confined. The authors propose here a complete set of order parameters which allow one to extract the full information about how the properties of anyons change through phase transitions, and to apply them to a range of topological phase transitions.

Non-Abelian chiral spin liquid in a quantum antiferromagnet revealed by an iPEPS study

Ji-Yao Chen, Laurens Vanderstraeten, Sylvain Capponi +1 more

Abelian and non-Abelian topological phases exhibiting protected chiral edge modes are ubiquitous in the realm of the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect. Here, we investigate a spin-1 Hamiltonian on the square lattice which could, potentially, host the spin liquid analog of the (bosonic) non-Abelian Moore-Read FQH state, as suggested by exact diagonalization of small clusters. Using families of fully SU(2)-spin symmetric and translationally invariant chiral projected entangled pair states (PEPS), variational energy optimization is performed using infinite-PEPS methods, providing good agreement with density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) results. A careful analysis of the bulk spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlation functions in the optimized spin liquid suggests that they exhibit long-range ``gossamer tails''. From the investigation of the entanglement spectrum, we observe sharply defined chiral edge modes following the prediction of the SU(2)${}_{2}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten theory and exhibiting a conformal field theory (CFT) central charge $c=3/2$, as expected for a Moore-Read chiral spin liquid. Using the PEPS bulk-edge correspondence, we argue the ``weak'' criticality of the bulk is in fact a finite-$D$ artifact of the chiral PEPS, which quickly becomes (practically) irrelevant as the PEPS bond dimension $D$ is increased. We conclude that the PEPS formalism offers an unbiased and efficient method to investigate non-Abelian chiral spin liquids in quantum antiferromagnets.
