Abstract

Abstract We study a heavy–heavy–light three-body system confined to one space dimension in the regime where an excited state in the heavy–light subsystems becomes weakly bound. The associated two-body system is characterized by (i) the structure of the weakly-bound excited heavy–light state and (ii) the presence of deeply-bound heavy–light states. The consequences of these aspects for the behavior of the three-body system are analyzed. We find a strong indication for universal behavior of both three-body binding energies and wave functions for different weakly-bound excited states in the heavy–light subsystems.

Universality in a one-dimensional three-body system

Lucas Happ, Matthias Zimmermann, S. Betelú +2 more

We study a heavy-heavy-light three-body system confined to one space dimension. Both binding energies and corresponding wave functions are obtained for (i) the zero-range and (ii) two finite-range attractive heavy-light interaction potentials. In the case of the zero-range potential, we apply the method of Skorniakov and Ter-Martirosian to explore the accuracy of the Born-Oppenheimer approach. For the finite-range potentials, we solve the Schr\"odinger equation numerically using a pseudospectral method. We demonstrate that when the two-body ground-state energy approaches zero, the three-body bound states display a universal behavior, independent of the shape of the interaction potential.

Scaling and universality in two dimensions: three-body bound states with short-ranged interactions

F F Bellotti, T. Frederico, M T Yamashita +3 more

The momentum space zero-range model is used to investigate universal properties of three interacting particles confined to two dimensions. The pertinent equations are first formulated for a system of two identical and one distinct particle and the two different two-body subsystems are characterized by two-body energies and masses. The three-body energy in units of one of the two-body energies is a universal function of the other two-body energy and the mass ratio. We derive convenient analytical formulae for calculations of the three-body energy as a function of these two independent parameters and exhibit the results as universal curves. In particular, we show that the three-body system can have any number of stable bound states. When the mass ratio of the distinct to identical particles is greater than 0.22, we find that at most two stable bound states exist, while for two heavy and one light mass an increasing number of bound states is possible. The specific number of stable bound states depends on the ratio of two-body bound state energies and on the mass ratio, and we map out an energy–mass phase diagram of the number of stable bound states. Realizable systems of both fermions and bosons are discussed in this framework.

Universal bound states of one-dimensional bosons with two- and three-body attractions

Yusuke Nishida

When quantum particles are confined into lower dimensions, an effective three-body interaction inevitably arises and may cause significant consequences. Here we study bosons in one dimension with weak two-body and three-body interactions, predict the existence of two three-body bound states when both interactions are attractive, and determine their binding energies as universal functions of the two-body and three-body scattering lengths. We also show that an infinitesimal three-body attraction induces an excited bound state only for 3, 39, or more bosons. Our findings herein have direct relevance to a broad range of quasi-one-dimensional systems realized with ultracold atoms.

Scaling behavior of scattering observables for three-body systems near the unitary limit

Lauro Tomio, M. A. Shalchi, Marcelo Takeshi Yamashita +2 more

This contribution reports recent investigations on low-energy scaling properties of three-body systems, by considering elastic s –wave collisions of a particle in a bound-state formed by the remaining two-body system. First, some previous results for the case of the halo nucleus 20 C will be revised, for the neutron– 19 C scattering properties near the critical condition for the occurrence of an excited bound state in 20 C, within a neutron–neutron– 18 C configuration. In our approach, we consider the Faddeev formalism with renormalized zero-range two-body interactions. Next, by considering the actual possibilities for verification of low-energy scaling properties in cold-atom laboratories, the approach is extended to atomic strongly-mass-imbalanced three-body systems, with two identical heavy particles and a light one. In this case, we consider that the heavy particle is being scattered by the light-heavy weakly-bound dimer. Our preliminary results for scattering observable are evidencing the universal scaling features.

Supercircle description of universal three-body states in two dimensions

F. F. Bellotti, T. Frederico, Marcelo Takeshi Yamashita +3 more

Bound states of asymmetric three-body systems confined to two dimensions are currently unknown. In the universal regime, two energy ratios and two mass ratios provide complete knowledge of the three-body energy measured in units of one two-body energy. We compute the three-body energy for general systems using numerical momentum-space techniques. The lowest number of stable bound states is produced when one mass is larger than two similar masses. We focus on selected asymmetric systems of interest in cold atom physics. The scaled three-body energy and the two scaled two-body energies are related through an equation for a supercircle whose radius increases almost linearly with three-body energy. The exponents exhibit an increasing behavior with three-body energy. The mass dependence is highly nontrivial. Based on our numerical findings, we give a simple relation that predicts the universal three-body energy.
