Thermalization in large-N CFTs

Abstract

Abstract In d-dimensional CFTs with a large number of degrees of freedom an important set of operators consists of the stress tensor and its products, multi stress tensors. Thermalization of such operators, the equality between their expectation values in heavy states and at finite temperature, is equivalent to a universal behavior of their OPE coefficients with a pair of identical heavy operators. We verify this behavior in a number of examples which include holographic and free CFTs and provide a bootstrap argument for the general case. In a free CFT we check the thermalization of multi stress tensor operators directly and also confirm the equality between the contributions of multi stress tensors to heavy-heavy-light-light correlators and to the corresponding thermal light-light two-point functions by disentangling the contributions of other light operators. Unlike multi stress tensors, these light operators violate the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis and do not thermalize.

Heavy operators and hydrodynamic tails

Luca V. Delacrétaz

The late time physics of interacting QFTs at finite temperature is controlled by hydrodynamics. For CFTs this implies that heavy operators – which are generically expected to create thermal states – can be studied semiclassically. We show that hydrodynamics universally fixes the OPE coefficients C_{HH'L} C H H ′ L , on average, of all neutral light operators with two non-identical heavy ones, as a function of the scaling dimension and spin of the operators. These methods can be straightforwardly extended to CFTs with global symmetries, and generalize recent EFT results on large charge operators away from the case of minimal dimension at fixed charge. We also revisit certain aspects of late time thermal correlators in QFT and other diffusive systems.

Universality in asymptotic bounds and its saturation in 2D CFT

Diptarka Das, Yuya Kusuki, Sridip Pal

Abstract We study asymptotics of three point coefficients (light-light-heavy) and two point correlators in heavy states in unitary, compact 2D CFTs. We prove an upper and lower bound on such quantities using numerically assisted Tauberian techniques. We obtain an optimal upper bound on the spectrum of operators appearing with fixed spin from the OPE of two identical scalars. While all the CFTs obey this bound, rational CFTs come close to saturating it. This mimics the scenario of bounds on asymptotic density of states and thereby pronounces an universal feature in asymptotics of 2D CFTs. Next, we clarify the role of smearing in interpreting the asymptotic results pertaining to considerations of eigenstate thermalization in 2D CFTs. In the context of light-light-heavy three point coefficients, we find that the order one number in the bound is sensitive to how close the light operators are from the $$ \frac{c}{32} $$ c 32 threshold. In context of two point correlator in heavy state, we find the presence of an enigmatic regime which separates the AdS3 thermal physics and the BTZ black hole physics. Furthermore, we present some new numerical results on the behaviour of spherical conformal block.

Virasoro conformal blocks and thermality from classical background fields

A. Liam Fitzpatrick, Jared Kaplan A, Matthew T. Walters

We show that in 2d CFTs at large central charge, the coupling of the stress tensor to heavy operators can be re-absorbed by placing the CFT in a non-trivial background metric. This leads to a more precise computation of the Virasoro conformal blocks between heavy and light operators, which are shown to be equivalent to global conformal blocks evaluated in the new background. We also generalize to the case where the operators carry U(1) charges. The refined Virasoro blocks can be used as the seed for a new Virasoro block recursion relation expanded in the heavy-light limit. We comment on the implications of our results for the universality of black hole thermality in AdS3, or equivalently, the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for CFT2 at large central charge.

Toward random tensor networks and holographic codes in CFT

Jeevan Chandra, Thomas Hartman

Abstract In holographic CFTs satisfying eigenstate thermalization, there is a regime where the operator product expansion can be approximated by a random tensor network. The geometry of the tensor network corresponds to a spatial slice in the holographic dual, with the tensors discretizing the radial direction. In spherically symmetric states in any dimension and more general states in 2d CFT, this leads to a holographic error-correcting code, defined in terms of OPE data, that can be systematically corrected beyond the random tensor approximation. The code is shown to be isometric for light operators outside the horizon, and non-isometric inside, as expected from general arguments about bulk reconstruction. The transition at the horizon occurs due to a subtle breakdown of the Virasoro identity block approximation in states with a complex interior.

Thermal one-point functions: CFT’s with fermions, large d and large spin

Justin R. David, Srijan Kumar

A bstract We apply the OPE inversion formula on thermal two-point functions of fermions to obtain thermal one-point function of fermion bi-linears appearing in the corresponding OPE. We primarily focus on the OPE channel which contains the stress tensor of the theory. We apply our formalism to the mean field theory of fermions and verify that the inversion formula reproduces the spectrum as well as their corresponding thermal one-point functions. We then examine the large N critical Gross-Neveu model in d = 2 k + 1 dimensions with k even and at finite temperature. We show that stress tensor evaluated from the inversion formula agrees with that evaluated from the partition function at the critical point. We demonstrate the expectation values of 3 different classes of higher spin currents are all related to each other by numerical constants, spin and the thermal mass. We evaluate the ratio of the thermal expectation values of higher spin currents at the critical point to the Gaussian fixed point or the Stefan-Boltzmann result, both for the large N critical O ( N ) model and the Gross-Neveu model in odd dimensions. This ratio is always less than one and it approaches unity on increasing the spin with the dimension d held fixed. The ratio however approaches zero when the dimension d is increased with the spin held fixed.

Thermal Polyakov bootstrap

Yongwei Guo, Zhijin Li, Tinghong Shen

We derive thermal Polyakov bootstrap equations for CFT two-point functions on $S^1_β\times\mathbb R^{d-1}$. Combining the thermal OPE with a dispersion relation and the method of images gives a representation in blocks that satisfy Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) covariance. Their local expansions contain additional thermal blocks at classical double-twist dimensions. Matching the prescribed physical OPE requires cancellation of these generated contributions, yielding explicit linear equations for thermal OPE coefficients, including any compensating terms required by the reconstruction. We formulate the equations for bosonic scalar correlators and antiperiodic scalar structures extracted from fermion correlators, and find consistent solutions in analytically tractable thermal CFTs. The coefficient matrix, which we call the Polyakov matrix, connects the large-spin expansion to KMS consistency and reduces to minus the identity on the classical double-twist spectrum. This structure suggests a numerical approach to the three-dimensional Ising CFT that combines known low-lying vacuum data with a self-consistent large-spin tail.
