Abstract

The authors theoretically investigate the prospects for photoassociation of three rubidium atoms, with emphasis on the symmetries that drive Jahn-Teller and related effects. The results could provide experimental guidance for the creation of ultracold rubidium trimer molecules.

Pump-probe study of the formation of rubidium molecules by ultrafast photoassociation of ultracold atoms

David J. McCabe, Duncan G. England, Hugo E. L. Martay +5 more

An experimental pump-probe study of the photoassociative creation of translationally ultracold rubidium molecules is presented together with numerical simulations of the process. The formation of loosely bound excited-state dimers is observed as a first step toward a fully coherent pump-dump approach to the stabilization of ${\text{Rb}}_{2}$ into its lowest ground vibrational states. The population that contributes to the pump-probe process is characterized and found to be distinct from a background population of preassociated molecules.

Short-pulse photoassociation in rubidium below the D1 line

Christiane P. Koch, Ronnie Kosloff, Françoise Masnou-Seeuws

Photoassociation of two ultracold rubidium atoms and the subsequent formation of stable molecules in the singlet ground and lowest triplet states is investigated theoretically. The method employs laser pulses inducing transitions via excited states correlated to the $5S+5{P}_{1∕2}$ asymptote. Weakly bound molecules in the singlet ground or lowest triplet state can be created by a single pulse while the formation of more deeply bound molecules requires a two-color pump-dump scenario. More deeply bound molecules in the singlet ground or lowest triplet state can be produced only if efficient mechanisms for both pump and dump steps exist. While long-range $1∕{R}^{3}$ potentials allow for efficient photoassociation, stabilization is facilitated by the resonant spin-orbit coupling of the ${0}_{u}^{+}$ states. Molecules in the singlet ground state bound by a few wave numbers can thus be formed. This provides a promising first step toward ground-state molecules which are ultracold in both translational and vibrational degrees of freedom.

Theory of Long-Range Ultracold Atom-Molecule Photoassociation

Jesús Pérez‐Ríos, Maxence Lepers, Olivier Dulieu

The creation of ultracold molecules is currently limited to diatomic species. In this Letter, we present a theoretical description of the photoassociation of ultracold atoms and molecules to create ultracold excited triatomic molecules, thus being a novel example of a light-assisted ultracold chemical reaction. The calculation of the photoassociation rate of an ultracold Cs_{2} molecule in its rovibrational ground state with an ultracold Cs atom at frequencies close to its resonant excitation is reported, based on the solution of the quantum dynamics involving the atom-molecule long-range interactions and assuming a model potential for the short-range physics. The rate for the formation of excited Cs_{3} molecules is predicted to be comparable with currently observed atom-atom photoassociation rates. We formulate an experimental proposal to observe this process relying on the available techniques of optical lattices and standard photoassociation spectroscopy.

Processes in the formation of ultracold NaCs

Christopher Haimberger, Jan Kleinert, Olivier Dulieu +1 more

The formation of electronic ground-state NaCs molecules from ultracold atoms by photoassociation is explored both experimentally and theoretically. We observe saturation of the photoassociation process as well as complete ionization of the molecular sample by resonant two-photon absorption. Measured absolute molecule formation rates are compared to theoretical calculations and shown to be in good agreement.
