Abstract

We consider the two-body problem in a periodic potential, and study the bound-state dispersion of a spin-$\ensuremath{\uparrow}$ fermion that is interacting with a spin-$\ensuremath{\downarrow}$ fermion through a short-range attractive interaction. Based on a variational approach, we obtain the exact solution of the dispersion in the form of a set of self-consistency equations, and apply it to tight-binding Hamiltonians with on-site interactions. We pay special attention to the bipartite lattices with a two-point basis that exhibit time-reversal symmetry, and show that the lowest-energy bound states disperse quadratically with momentum, whose effective-mass tensor is partially controlled by the quantum metric tensor of the underlying Bloch states. In particular, we apply our theory to the Mielke checkerboard lattice, and study the special role played by the interband processes in producing a finite effective mass for the bound states in a nonisolated flat band.

Effective-mass tensor of the two-body bound states and the quantum-metric tensor of the underlying Bloch states in multiband lattices

M. Iskin

By considering an on-site attraction between a spin-$\ensuremath{\uparrow}$ and a spin-$\ensuremath{\downarrow}$ fermion in a multiband tight-binding lattice, here we study the two-body spectrum and derive an exact relation between the inverse of the effective-mass tensor of the lowest bound states and the quantum-metric tensor of the underlying Bloch states. In addition to the intraband (or the so-called conventional) contribution that depends only on the single-particle spectrum and the interband (or the so-called geometric) contribution that is controlled by the quantum metric, our generalized relation has an additional interband contribution that depends on the so-called band-resolved quantum metric. All of our analytical expressions are applicable to those multiband lattices that simultaneously exhibit time-reversal symmetry and fulfill the condition on spatially uniform pairing. As a nontrivial illustration we analyze the two-body problem in a kagome lattice with nearest-neighbor hoppings, and we show that the exact relation provides a perfect benchmark.

Exact relation between the effective-mass tensor of the two-body bound states and the quantum-metric tensor of the underlying Bloch states.

Three-body problem in a multiband Hubbard model

M. Iskin

We consider the three-body problem in a generic multiband lattice, and analyze the dispersion of the trimer states that are made of two spin-$\ensuremath{\uparrow}$ fermions and a spin-$\ensuremath{\downarrow}$ fermion due to an on-site attraction in between. Based on a variational approach, we first obtain the exact solution in the form of a set of coupled integral equations, and then reduce it to an eigenvalue problem. As an illustration we apply our theory to the sawtooth lattice, and numerically show that energetically stable trimers are allowed in a two-band setting, which is in sharp contrast with the single-band linear-chain model. In particular, we also reveal that the trimers have a nearly flat dispersion when formed in a flat band, which is unlike the highly dispersive spectrum of its dimers.

Pair size and quantum geometry in a multiband Hubbard model

M. Iskin

We study the size of two-body bound states and Cooper pairs within a multiband Hubbard model that features time-reversal symmetry and uniform pairing on a generic lattice. Our analysis involves (i) an exact calculation of the localization tensor to determine the size of lowest-lying two-body bound state in vacuum, and (ii) an evaluation of the analogous tensor to estimate the average size of Cooper pairs within the mean-field Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer to Bose-Einstein condensate (BCS-BEC) crossover theory at zero temperature. Beyond the conventional intraband contribution that depends on Bloch bands, we show that pair size also has a geometric contribution governed by the quantum-metric tensor of the Bloch states and their band-resolved quantum-metric tensors. As a concrete example, we investigate the pyrochlore-Hubbard model numerically and demonstrate that, while the pair size diverges in the weakly interacting BCS regime of dispersive bands, it remains finite and relatively small in the flat-band regime, even for infinitesimal interaction, perfectly matching the exact two-body result in the dilute limit.

Stability of (N+1) -body fermion clusters in a multiband Hubbard model

M. Iskin, Ahmet Keleş

We start with a variational approach and derive a set of coupled integral equations for the bound states of $N$ identical spin-$\ensuremath{\uparrow}$ fermions and a single spin-$\ensuremath{\downarrow}$ fermion in a generic multiband Hubbard Hamiltonian with an attractive on-site interaction. As an illustration, we apply our integral equations to the one-dimensional sawtooth lattice up to $N\ensuremath{\le}3$, i.e., to the $(3+1)$-body problem, and we reveal not only the presence of tetramer states in this two-band model but also their quasiflat dispersion when formed in a flat band. Furthermore, for $N={4,5,\ensuremath{\cdots},10}$, our density-matrix renormalization-group simulations and exact diagonalization suggest the presence of larger and larger multimers with lower and lower binding energies, conceivably without an upper bound on $N$. These peculiar $(N+1)$-body clusters are in sharp contrast with the exact results on the single-band linear-chain model where none of the $N\ensuremath{\ge}2$ multimers appear. Hence their presence must be taken into account for a proper description of the many-body phenomena in flat-band systems, e.g., they may suppress superconductivity especially when there exists a large spin imbalance.

Quantum metric and effective mass of a two-body bound state in a flat band

Päivi Törmä, Long Liang, Sebastiano Peotta

We consider two-body bound states in a flat band of a multiband system. The existence of pair dispersion predicts the possibility of breaking the degeneracy of the band and creating order, such as superconductivity. Within a separable interaction potential approximation, we find that the finiteness of the effective mass of a bound pair is determined by a band-structure invariant, which in the uniform case becomes the quantum metric. The results offer a simple foundation to understand and predict flat-band superconductivity. We propose an experiment to test the interaction-induced pair motion.
