Quantum phases of self-bound droplets of Bose-Bose mixtures

Abstract

We systematically investigate the ground-state properties of self-bound droplets of quasi-two-dimensional binary Bose gases by using the Gaussian state theory. We find that quantum droplets consists of two macroscopic squeezed phases and a macroscopic coherent phase. We map out the phase diagram and determine all phase boundaries via both numerical and nearly analytical methods. In particular, we find three easily accessible signatures for the quantum phases and the stabilization mechanism of the self-bound droplets by precisely measuring their radial size. Our studies indicate that binary droplets represent an ideal platform for in-depth investigations of the quantum nature of the droplet state.

Self-bound droplets in quasi-two-dimensional dipolar condensates

Yuqi Wang, Tao Shi, Su Yi

We study the ground-state properties of self-bound dipolar droplets in quasi-two-dimensional geometry by using the Gaussian state theory. We show that there exist two quantum phases corresponding to the macroscopic squeezed vacuum and squeezed coherent states. We further show that the radial size versus atom number curve exhibits a double-dip structure, as a result of the multiple quantum phases. In particular, we find that the critical atom number for the self-bound droplets is determined by the quantum phases, which allows us to distinguish the quantum state and validates the Gaussian state theory.

Macroscopic squeezing in quasi-one-dimensional two-component Bose gases

Yaoqi Tian, Junqiao Pan, Tao Shi +1 more

Abstract We investigate the ground-state properties and the dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional quantum droplets of binary Bose condensates by employing the Gaussian state theory. We show that there exists three quantum phases for the ground states of the droplets, including a coherent state and two macroscopic squeezed states. The phase transition between two macroscopic squeezed states is of the third order; while between the macroscopic squeezed state and the coherent is of a crossover type. As for the dynamics, we find that, by tuning the reduced scattering length to a negative value, a significant fraction of the atoms can be transferred from a coherent state to a macroscopic squeezed state. Our studies open up the possibility of generating macroscopic squeezed states using binary condensates.

Fluctuations and quantum self-bound droplets in a dipolar Bose-Bose mixture

Abdelâali Boudjemâa

We systematically investigate the properties of three-dimensional dipolar binary Bose mixture at low temperatures. A set of coupled self-consistent equations of motion are derived for the two condensates. In the homogeneous case, useful analytical formulas for the condensate depletion, the anomalous density, the ground-state energy, and the equation of state are obtained. The theory is extended to the inhomogeneous case and the importance of the inhomogeneity is highlighted. Our results open up an avenue for studying dipolar mixture droplets. Impacts of the dipole-dipole interaction on the stability, density profiles, and the size of the self-bound droplet are deeply discussed. The finite-temperature behavior of such a state is also examined.

Ground-state solution of quantum droplets in Bose-Bose mixtures

Wei Liu, Limin Xu

In this paper, we present a systematic study on the ground state computation of quantum droplets in homonuclear Bose-Bose mixtures, governed by the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equations (eGPEs) with Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) corrections. This model captures the formation of self-bound droplets stabilized by the delicate balance between the attractive mean-field interaction and the repulsive quantum fluctuations. We formulate dimensionless energy functionals for both the general two-component system and the reduced single-component density-locked model. To compute the ground states efficiently, we adapt and benchmark various gradient flow discretization schemes, identifying a backward-forward sine-pseudospectral scheme based on the gradient flow with Lagrange multiplier method (GFLM-BFSP) as the robust solver for our simulations. Utilizing this method, we report three main numerical observations: (i) the density-locked model is quantitatively validated as a reliable approximation for ground state properties; (ii) the dimension-dependent convergence rates of the Thomas-Fermi approximation are established in the strong-coupling regime; and (iii) the critical particle number for self-binding in free space is numerically determined, providing a precise correction to the analytical prediction by Petrov [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 155302 (2015)].

Impurities in quasi-one-dimensional droplets of binary Bose mixtures

Sudip Sinha, Sayak Biswas, Luis Santos +1 more

Recently created self-bound quantum droplets of binary Bose mixtures open intriguing possibilities for the study of impurity physics. We show that the properties of impurities embedded in quasi-one-dimensional droplets are determined by the interplay between back-action and quantum fluctuations. Due to such back-action, repulsive impurities may form a metastable quasi-bound state inside the droplet. In contrast, attractive impurities remain bound to the droplet, leading to the hybridization of droplet and impurity excitations, as well as to peculiar scattering resonances. Interestingly, impurity trapping may result solely from the effect of quantum fluctuations. These results may readily be probed experimentally by doping the currently available droplets of binary mixtures.

Self-consistent description of Bose-Bose droplets: Harmonically trapped quasi-two-dimensional droplets

Paweł Zin, Maciej Pylak, Mariusz Gajda

We describe a quantum droplet of a Bose-Bose mixture squeezed by an external harmonic force in one spatial direction. Our approach is based on the self-consistent method formulated in Zin et al. (arXiv:2202.10109) The true spatial droplet profile in the direction of confinement is accounted for; however, the local density approximation is assumed in the free directions. We define a numerical approach to find the beyond-mean-field contribution to the chemical potential (Lee-Huang-Yang chemical potential)---the quantity that determines the droplet's profile. In addition to the numerical approach, we find the Lee-Huang-Yang potential in the analytic form in two limiting cases: a perturbative result for a strong confinement and a semiclassical expression when confinement is very weak.
