Abstract

Quantifying entanglement properties of mixed states in quantum field theory via entanglement of purification and reflected entropy is a new and challenging subject. In this work, we study both quantities for two spherical subregions far away from each other in the vacuum of a conformal field theory in any number of dimensions. Using lattice techniques, we find an elementary proof that the decay of both the entanglement of purification and reflected entropy is enhanced with respect to the mutual information behavior by a logarithm of the distance between the subregions. In the case of the Ising spin chain at criticality and the related free fermion conformal field theory, we compute also the overall coefficients numerically for the both quantities of interest.

Entanglement and complexity of purification in (1+1)-dimensional free conformal field theories

Hugo A. Camargo, Lucas Hackl, Michał P. Heller +3 more

Finding pure states in an enlarged Hilbert space that encode the mixed state of a quantum field theory as a partial trace is necessarily a challenging task. Nevertheless, such purifications play the key role in characterizing quantum information-theoretic properties of mixed states via entanglement and complexity of purifications. In this article, we analyze these quantities for two intervals in the vacuum of free bosonic and Ising conformal field theories using the most general Gaussian purifications. We provide a comprehensive comparison with existing results and identify universal properties. We further discuss important subtleties in our setup: the massless limit of the free bosonic theory and the corresponding behavior of the mutual information, as well as the Hilbert space structure under the Jordan-Wigner mapping in the spin chain model of the Ising conformal field theory.

Entanglement of purification: from spin chains to holography

Phuc Nguyen, Trithep Devakul, Matthew G. Halbasch +2 more

Purification is a powerful technique in quantum physics whereby a mixed quantum state is extended to a pure state on a larger system. This process is not unique, and in systems composed of many degrees of freedom, one natural purification is the one with minimal entanglement. Here we study the entropy of the minimally entangled purification, called the entanglement of purification, in three model systems: an Ising spin chain, conformal field theories holographically dual to Einstein gravity, and random stabilizer tensor networks. We conjecture values for the entanglement of purification in all these models, and we support our conjectures with a variety of numerical and analytical results. We find that such minimally entangled purifications have a number of applications, from enhancing entanglement-based tensor network methods for describing mixed states to elucidating novel aspects of the emergence of geometry from entanglement in the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Aspects of the reflected entropy

Souvik Dutta

The aim of this thesis is to compile our study of a quantum information quantity, called the reflected entropy, which is a measure of quantum correlations in mixed states. Our work is motivated by, and generalizes, an earlier work on the thermo-field double purification of thermal states, in the purview of the AdS/CFT correspondence. Our main result is that in so-called holographic CFT states, the reflected entropy is given by the area of a class of bulk geometric quantities inside the entanglement wedge, called reflected minimal surfaces. From the bulk point of view, we show that half the area of the reflected minimal surface, in Planck units, gives a reinterpretation of the notion of the entanglement wedge cross-section. In doing so, we address the connection with a recent conjecture on the entanglement of purification. We prove some general properties of the reflected entropy and introduce a novel replica trick in CFTs for studying it. The duality is established using a recently introduced approach to holographic modular flow. We also consider an Engelhardt-Wall holographic construction of the canonical purification − the reflected minimal surfaces are simply Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces in this new spacetime. When we move to the continuum limit, we find a relation to the split property − the reflected entropy computes the von Neumann entropy of a canonical splitting type-I factor. In this limit, we show that the reflected entropy serves as a regulator for the UV divergent entanglement entropy. Finally, we consider the reflected entropy for free fermions in two dimensions. Working directly in the continuum theory, we extract the reflected entropy from the spectrum of a singular integral equation whose kernel is determined by the modular flowed free fermion correlation function. We find the spectrum numerically and analytically in certain limits, in one of which, the reflected entanglement spectrum rapidly approaches the spectrum of the thermal density matrix. This suggests that the reflected entanglement spectrum is well suited to the task of extracting physical data of the theory directly from the vacuum/ground state wave function.

Entanglement of purification in free scalar field theories

Arpan Bhattacharyya, Tadashi Takayanagi, Koji Umemoto

A bstract We compute the entanglement of purification (EoP) in a 2d free scalar field theory with various masses. This quantity measures correlations between two subsystems and is reduced to the entanglement entropy when the total system is pure. We obtain explicit numerical values by assuming minimal gaussian wave functionals for the purified states. We find that when the distance between the subsystems is large, the EoP behaves like the mutual information. However, when the distance is small, the EoP shows a characteristic behavior which qualitatively agrees with the conjectured holographic computation and which is different from that of the mutual information. We also study behaviors of mutual information in purified spaces and violations of monogamy/strong superadditivity.

Reflected entropy for free scalars

Pablo Bueno, Horacio Casini

A bstract We continue our study of reflected entropy, R ( A, B ), for Gaussian systems. In this paper we provide general formulas valid for free scalar fields in arbitrary dimensions. Similarly to the fermionic case, the resulting expressions are fully determined in terms of correlators of the fields, making them amenable to lattice calculations. We apply this to the case of a (1 + 1)-dimensional chiral scalar, whose reflected entropy we compute for two intervals as a function of the cross-ratio, comparing it with previous holographic and free-fermion results. For both types of free theories we find that reflected entropy satisfies the conjectural monotonicity property R ( A, BC ) ≥ R ( A, B ). Then, we move to (2 + 1) dimensions and evaluate it for square regions for free scalars, fermions and holography, determining the very-far and very-close regimes and comparing them with their mutual information counterparts. In all cases considered, both for (1 + 1)- and (2 + 1)-dimensional theories, we verify that the general inequality relating both quantities, R ( A, B ) ≥ I ( A, B ), is satisfied. Our results suggest that for general regions characterized by length-scales L A ∼ L B ∼ L and separated a distance ℓ , the reflected entropy in the large-separation regime ( x ≡ L / ℓ ≪ 1) behaves as R ( x ) ∼ −I ( x ) log x for general CFTs in arbitrary dimensions.

Towards an entanglement measure for mixed states in CFTs based on relative entropy

Tadashi Takayanagi, Tomonori Ugajin, Koji Umemoto

Abstract Relative entropy of entanglement (REE) is an entanglement measure of bipartite mixed states, defined by the minimum of the relative entropy S(ρ AB ||σ AB ) between a given mixed state ρ AB and an arbitrary separable state σ AB . The REE is always bounded by the mutual information I AB = S(ρ AB ||ρ A ⊗ ρ B ) because the latter measures not only quantum entanglement but also classical correlations. In this paper we address the question of to what extent REE can be small compared to the mutual information in conformal field theories (CFTs). For this purpose, we perturbatively compute the relative entropy between the vacuum reduced density matrix ρ AB 0 on disjoint subsystems A ∪ B and arbitrarily separable state σ AB in the limit where two subsystems A and B are well separated, then minimize the relative entropy with respect to the separable states. We argue that the result highly depends on the spectrum of CFT on the subsystems. When we have a few low energy spectrum of operators as in the case where the subsystems consist of finite number of spins in spin chain models, the REE is considerably smaller than the mutual information. However in general our perturbative scheme breaks down, and the REE can be as large as the mutual information.
