Abstract

A bstract Since the work of Ryu and Takayanagi, deep connections between quantum entanglement and spacetime geometry have been revealed. The negative eigenvalues of the partial transpose of a bipartite density operator is a useful diagnostic of entanglement. In this paper, we discuss the properties of the associated entanglement negativity and its Rényi generalizations in holographic duality. We first review the definition of the Rényi negativities, which contain the familiar logarithmic negativity as a special case. We then study these quantities in the random tensor network model and rigorously derive their large bond dimension asymptotics. Finally, we study entanglement negativity in holographic theories with a gravity dual, where we find that Rényi negativities are often dominated by bulk solutions that break the replica symmetry. From these replica symmetry breaking solutions, we derive general expressions for Rényi negativities and their special limits including the logarithmic negativity. In fixed-area states, these general expressions simplify dramatically and agree precisely with our results in the random tensor network model. This provides a concrete setting for further studying the implications of replica symmetry breaking in holography.

Entanglement negativity and replica symmetry breaking in general holographic states

Xi Dong, Jonah Kudler-Flam, Pratik Rath

A bstract The entanglement negativity $$ \mathcal{E} $$ E ( A : B ) is a useful measure of quantum entanglement in bipartite mixed states. In random tensor networks (RTNs), which are related to fixed-area states, it was found in ref. [1] that the dominant saddles computing the even Rényi negativity $$ {\mathcal{E}}^{(2k)} $$ E 2 k generically break the ℤ 2 k replica symmetry. This calls into question previous calculations of holographic negativity using 2D CFT techniques that assumed ℤ 2 k replica symmetry and proposed that the negativity was related to the entanglement wedge cross section. In this paper, we resolve this issue by showing that in general holographic states, the saddles computing $$ {\mathcal{E}}^{(2k)} $$ E 2 k indeed break the ℤ 2 k replica symmetry. Our argument involves an identity relating $$ {\mathcal{E}}^{(2k)} $$ E 2 k to the k -th Rényi entropy on subregion AB ∗ in the doubled state $$ {\left.|{\rho}_{AB}\right\rangle}_{A{A}^{\ast }{BB}^{\ast }} $$ ρ AB A A ∗ BB ∗ , from which we see that the ℤ 2 k replica symmetry is broken down to ℤ k . For k < 1, which includes the case of $$ \mathcal{E} $$ E ( A : B ) at k = 1/2, we use a modified cosmic brane proposal to derive a new holographic prescription for $$ {\mathcal{E}}^{(2k)} $$ E 2 k and show that it is given by a new saddle with multiple cosmic branes anchored to subregions A and B in the original state. Using our prescription, we reproduce known results for the PSSY model and show that our saddle dominates over previously proposed CFT calculations near k = 1. Moreover, we argue that the ℤ 2 k symmetric configurations previously proposed are not gravitational saddles, unlike our proposal. Finally, we contrast holographic calculations with those arising from RTNs with non-maximally entangled links, demonstrating that the qualitative form of backreaction in such RTNs is different from that in gravity.

Entanglement negativity on random spin networks

Simone Cepollaro, Goffredo Chirco, Gianluca Cuffaro +1 more

We investigate multipartite entanglement for quantum states of $3D$ space geometry, described via generalized random spin networks with fixed areas, in the context of background independent approaches to quantum gravity. We focus on entanglement negativity as a well defined witness of quantum correlations for mixed states, in our setting describing generic subregions of the boundary of a quantum $3D$ region of space. In particular, we consider a generic tripartition of the boundary of an open spin network state and we compute the typical R\'enyi negativity of two boundary subregions $A$ and $B$ immersed in the environment $C$, explicitly for a set of simple open random spin network states. We use the random character of the spin network to exploit replica and random average techniques to derive the typical R\'enyi negativty via a classical generalized Ising model correspondence generally used for random tensor networks in the large bond regime. For trivially correlated random spin network states, with only local entanglement between spins located on the network edges, we find that typical log negativity displays a holographic character, in agreement with the results for random tensor networks, in large spin limit. When nonlocal bulk entanglement between intertwiners at the vertices is considered the negativity increases, while at the same time the holographic scaling is generally perturbed by the bulk contribution.

Holographic duality from random tensor networks

Patrick M. Hayden, Sepehr Nezami, Xiao-Liang Qi +3 more

Tensor networks provide a natural framework for exploring holographic duality because they obey entanglement area laws. They have been used to construct explicit toy models realizing many of the interesting structural features of the AdS/CFT correspondence, including the non-uniqueness of bulk operator reconstruction in the boundary theory. In this article, we explore the holographic properties of networks of random tensors. We find that our models naturally incorporate many features that are analogous to those of the AdS/CFT correspondence. When the bond dimension of the tensors is large, we show that the entanglement entropy of all boundary regions, whether connected or not, obey the Ryu-Takayanagi entropy formula, a fact closely related to known properties of the multipartite entanglement of assistance. We also discuss the behavior of Rényi entropies in our models and contrast it with AdS/CFT. Moreover, we find that each boundary region faithfully encodes the physics of the entire bulk entanglement wedge, i.e., the bulk region enclosed by the boundary region and the minimal surface. Our method is to interpret the average over random tensors as the partition function of a classical ferromagnetic Ising model, so that the minimal surfaces of Ryu-Takayanagi appear as domain walls. Upon including the analog of a bulk field, we find that our model reproduces the expected corrections to the Ryu-Takayanagi formula: the bulk minimal surface is displaced and the entropy is augmented by the entanglement of the bulk field. Increasing the entanglement of the bulk field ultimately changes the minimal surface behavior topologically, in a way similar to the effect of creating a black hole. Extrapolating bulk correlation functions to the boundary permits the calculation of the scaling dimensions of boundary operators, which exhibit a large gap between a small number of low-dimension operators and the rest. While we are primarily motivated by the AdS/CFT duality, the main results of the article define a more general form of bulk-boundary correspondence which could be useful for extending holography to other spacetimes.

Negativity spectra in random tensor networks and holography

Jonah Kudler-Flam, Vladimir Narovlansky, Shinsei Ryu

Abstract Negativity is a measure of entanglement that can be used both in pure and mixed states. The negativity spectrum is the spectrum of eigenvalues of the partially transposed density matrix, and characterizes the degree and “phase” of entanglement. For pure states, it is simply determined by the entanglement spectrum. We use a diagrammatic method complemented by a modification of the Ford-Fulkerson algorithm to find the negativity spectrum in general random tensor networks with large bond dimensions. In holography, these describe the entanglement of fixed-area states. It was found that many fixed-area states have a negativity spectrum given by a semi-circle. More generally, we find new negativity spectra that appear in random tensor networks, as well as in phase transitions in holographic states, wormholes, and holographic states with bulk matter. The smallest random tensor network is the same as a micro-canonical version of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity decorated with end-of-the-world branes. We consider the semi-classical negativity of Hawking radiation and find that contributions from islands should be included. We verify this in the JT gravity model, showing the Euclidean wormhole origin of these contributions.

Explorations in Holographic Entanglement Entropy

Aitor Lewkowycz

In this Dissertation, different aspects of holographic entanglement entropy are explored. In quantum information theory, entanglement is a useful resource needed to perform quantum operations. Entanglement entropy quantifies this resource and even if computable in quantum field theories, it is quite hard to calculate explicitly. However, in the context of gauge/gravity duality, (holographic) entanglement entropy was proposed by Ryu and Takayanagi (RT) to be captured by the area of a minimal surface in Anti DeSitter (AdS) space, which is extremely simple to compute. We begin by using the holographic dictionary to derive the RT formula. This is done by first considering smooth bulk geometries which are dual to n copies of the boundary geometry glued in a particular way. The action of these geometries computes the Renyi entropies S_n for any integer n. We give a prescription to analytically continue the action to non-integer n and argue that, as n goes to 1,S_1, the entanglement entropy, is given by the area of a minimal surface, reproducing the RT conjecture. That is, we reduced the RT proposal to the equality between bulk and boundary partition functions, a standard entry in the dictionary. We then generalize the previous formalism to account for corrections due to bulk quantum fields (1/N corrections in the boundary). This allows us to derive a new formula: boundary entanglement entropy is given by the area of the minimal surface plus bulk entanglement entropy. This extends RT beyond the planar limit and we present several predictions of the proposal. Our exploration of holographic entanglement entropy continues by considering different states: by comparing the quantum corrected entropy for nearby states we obtain the modular hamiltonian operator in bulk perturbation theory. From this expression of the modular hamiltonian, we derive that relative entropy is bulk relative entropy and that the modular flow is the bulk modular flow.
