Abstract

Successive-cancellation list (SCL) decoding of polar codes has been adopted for 5G wireless communications. How-ever, the performance of moderate code length is not satisfactory. Heuristic or deep-learning-aided (DL-aided) flip algorithms have been developed to improve the performance by locating error bit positions after SCL decoding. In this work, we propose a new flip algorithm with the help of differentiable neural computer (DNC). New state and action encoding are developed to improve DNC training and inference efficiency. The proposed two-phase method is done by a flip DNC (F-DNC) to rank the most likely flip positions for multi-bit flipping, and if decoding still fails, a flip-validate DNC (FV-DNC) is applied to re-select error bit positions in successive flip decoding trials. Supervised training methods are designed for the two DNCs. Simulation results show that the proposed DNC-aided SCL-Flip (DNC-SCLF) decoding demonstrates up to 0.34 dB coding gain or 54.2% reduction in the average number of decoding attempts over prior work.

Deep-Learning-Aided Successive-Cancellation Decoding of Polar Codes

Seyyed Ali Hashemi, Nghia Doan, Thibaud Tonnellier +1 more

A deep-learning-aided successive-cancellation list (DL-SCL) decoding algorithm for polar codes is introduced with deep-learning-aided successive-cancellation (DL-SC) decoding being a specific case of it. The DL-SCL decoder works by allowing additional rounds of SCL decoding when the first SCL decoding attempt fails, using a novel bit-flipping metric. The proposed bit-flipping metric exploits the inherent relations between the information bits in polar codes that are represented by a correlation matrix. The correlation matrix is then optimized using emerging deep-learning techniques. Performance results on a polar code of length 128 with 64 information bits concatenated with a 24-bit cyclic redundancy check show that the proposed bit-flipping metric in the proposed DL-SCL decoder requires up to 66% fewer multiplications and up to 36% fewer additions, without any need to perform transcendental functions, and by providing almost the same error-correction performance in comparison with the state of the art.

Deep-Learning-Aided Successive Cancellation List Flip Decoding for Polar Codes

Fu-Siang Liang, Shan Lu, Yeong-Luh Ueng

Polar codes are the first error-correcting code proven to achieve channel capacity based on infinite code length. The Successive Cancellation List Flip (SCLF) decoding algorithm was proposed by flipping an erroneous bit during the next decoding attempt. To identify the erroneous bits, the Log-Likelihood Ratio (LLR) is used to indicate the reliability of each decision bit. To improve the accuracy of the erroneous bit prediction, we propose deep-learning-aided (DL-aided) SCLF decoding algorithms. We first offer a stacked LSTM network that contains new features to train our models, which are able to improve the accuracy of the prediction of positions of erroneous bits. Then we separately train the stacked LSTM models to predict the position of both the first and second erroneous bits and whether to continue flipping. As a result, the DL-aided SCLF decoding algorithms based on the proposed stacked LSTM flip-1 model, stacked LSTM flip-2 model, and the stacked LSTM continue-flipping check (CFC) model are able to provide a better performance at a lower number of average decoding attempts when compared to other state-of-the-art decoding algorithms.

Deep Learning-Assisted Adaptive Dynamic-SCLF Decoding of Polar Codes

Jun Li, Liangyu Zhou, Zhengquan Li +4 more

Recently, the dynamic-successive cancellation list flip (D-SCLF) decoder has been proposed to improve the high-order flipping performance of existing successive cancellation list flip (SCLF) decoders in polar codes decoding. However, the D-SCLF decoder involves a large number of exponential and logarithmic operations, resulting in an exponential increase in computational complexity. To further improve the performance and reduce the average complexity of D-SCLF decoding, the deep learning-assisted adaptive dynamic-SCLF (DL-AD-SCLF) decoding is proposed in this paper. The error metric of D-SCLF decoding is re-derived, and an approximation scheme is proposed to reduce computational complexity. To compensate the loss of performance due to approximation, two learnable parameters are introduced. Customized neural network structures are proposed to optimize these learnable parameters according to the improved error metric by employing deep learning (DL), and the deep learning-assisted dynamic-SCLF (DL-D-SCLF) decoding is proposed. Furthermore, the adaptive list is introduced into the DL-D-SCLF decoding to further reduce decoding complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed decoder performance is improved up to 0.35dB and 0.25dB, the average complexity is reduced by up to 57.65% and 51.48% for single-bit and multi-bit flipping, respectively. Additionally, the proposed decoder exhibits good robustness to changes in code rates, code lengths, and channel conditions.

An Improved Bit-Flipping Algorithm of Successive Cancellation List Decoding for Polar Codes

Desheng Wang, Jihang Yin, Yonggang Xu +3 more

Polar codes, as the coding scheme for the control channel in fifth-generation mobile communication technology (5G), have attracted widespread attention since their proposal. As a mainstream decoding algorithm for polar codes, the successive cancellation list (SCL) decoder usually improves the error correction performance by increasing the list size, but this method suffers from the problems of high decoding complexity. To address this problem, this paper proposes a layered-search bit-flipping (LS-SCLF) decoding algorithm based on SCL decoding. Firstly, a new flip-bit metric is proposed, which derives a formula to approximate the probability of an error occurring in an information bit. This formula introduces a perturbation parameter to improve the calculation accuracy. Secondly, a compromise scheme for determining the perturbation parameter is proposed. The scheme uses Monte Carlo simulation to determine an optimized parameter for the precise positioning of the first erroneous decoded bit under different decoding conditions. Finally, a layered search strategy is adopted to sequentially search the erroneous decoded bits from the low order to high order, which can correct up to multiple bits at the same time. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves improved error correction performance with a slight increase in decoding complexity compared to the generalized SCL-Flip (GSCLF) decoding algorithm. This algorithm also achieves a good balance between the error correction performance and decoding complexity.

Successive Cancellation List Flip Decoding for eBCH-polar Codes

Wei-Cheng Wang, Meng-Ru Wu, Shan Lu +2 more

The eBCH-polar codes is a powerful way to construct polar codes. With high minimum Hamming distance, it outperforms ordinary Polar codes under successive cancellation list (SCL) decoder. However, the absence of cyclic redundancy check (CRC) bits in eBCH-polar codes makes it challenging to adopt SCL-flip (SCLF) decoding scheme. In this research, we propose a flip scheme activated by a Normalized Path Metric (PM) range and a mismatch criterion, which respectively leverage the properties of SCL decoding and dynamic frozen bits of eBCH-polar codes. This work also improves the selection the flipping bits by modifying metric to account for the structure of dynamic frozen bits and reduce the search space. Based on these modifications, we proposed SCLF-1 and SCLF-2 decoding algorithms for eBCH-polar codes. Simulation results show that both of the proposed decoding schemes achieve superior performance compared to other contemporary decoding algorithms for CRC aided polar (CA-polar) codes, demonstrating enhanced error rates performance within the same decoding attempt.

An Error Segment Bit-Flip Algorithm for Successive Cancellation List Decoding of Polar Codes

Jing Zhang, Hongbing Qiu, Ling Zhan +1 more

Polar codes have garnered significant attention since they were proposed due to their capacity-achieving properties and their low-complexity decoding process, and they were selected as the coding scheme for the control channel in 5G mobile communication technology. A successive cancellation list (SCL) decoder, aided by a cyclic redundancy check (CRC), performs the competitive error correcting performance for polar codes compared to other sophisticated codes. The SCL-Flip decoding algorithm is proposed to enhance the error correction performance of the SCL. However, the SCL-Flip is hampered by a high decoding complexity due to the necessary selection and sorting process of path metrics (PMs). Additionally, it requires a large number of iterations to achieve a good error correction performance. In this paper, we propose the error segment bit-flip (ES-SCL-Flip) decoding algorithm, a simplified bit-flip approach for the SCL decoder based on analyzing the distributions of the first error bit. Firstly, we construct an index set with a high probability of the first erroneous bit. Second, a bit-flip criterion is introduced to prevent the costly operation of the PM selection and sorting without compromising the error correction performance. Finally, a search strategy is employed that utilizes segmented error indication to target and rectify the initial error segment sequentially. The simulation results demonstrate that the ES-SCL-Flip decoder provides an improved error correction performance with only a minimal increase in decoding complexity compared to the conventional CRC-aided SCL decoder. This algorithm attains a commendable equilibrium between the error correction performance and decoding complexity.
