Disorder-induced topology in quench dynamics

Abstract

We study the effect of strong disorder on topology and entanglement in quench dynamics. Although disorder-induced topological phases have been well studied in equilibrium, the disorder-induced topology in quench dynamics has not been explored. In this paper, we predict a disorder-induced topology of postquench states characterized by the quantized dynamical Chern number and the crossings in the entanglement spectrum in $(1+1)$ dimensions. The dynamical Chern number undergoes transitions from zero to unity and back to zero when increasing the disorder strength. The boundaries between different dynamical Chern numbers are determined by delocalized critical points in the postquench Hamiltonian with the strong disorder. An experimental realization in quantum walks is discussed.

Topology and entanglement in quench dynamics

Po-Yao Chang

We classify the topology of the quench dynamics by homotopy groups. A relation between the topological invariant of a postquench order parameter and the topological invariant of a static Hamiltonian is shown in $d+1$ dimensions ($d=1,2,3$). The midgap states in the entanglement spectrum of the postquench states reveal their topological nature. When a trivial quantum state is under a sudden quench to a Chern insulator, the midgap states in the entanglement spectrum form rings. These rings are analogous to the boundary Fermi rings in the Hopf insulators. Finally, we show a postquench order parameter in 3+1 dimensions can be characterized by the second Chern number. The number of Dirac cones in the entanglement spectrum is equal to the second Chern number.

A Critical Study of Quantum Phase Transition

Shyam Kishor Thakur

We study the dynamical quantum phase transition of a critical quantum quench, in which the pre-quenched Hamiltonian, or the post quenched Hamiltonian, or both of them are set to be the critical points of equilibrium quantum phase transitions. We find a half-quantized or unquantized dynamical topological order parameter and dynamical Chern number; these results and also the existence of dynamical quantum phase transition are all closely related to the singularity of the Bogoliubov angle at the gap-closing momentum. The effects of the singularity may also be canceled out if both the prequenched and postquenched Hamiltonians are critical; then the dynamical topological order parameter and dynamical Chern number restore to integer ones. Our findings show that the widely accepted definitions of the dynamical topological order parameter and dynamical Chern number are problematic for the critical quenches in the perspective of topology, which call for new definitions of them.

Quench-induced dynamical topology under dynamical noise

Lin Zhang, Long Zhang, Xiong-Jun Liu

Equilibrium topological phases are robust against weak static disorder but may break down in the strongdisorder regime. Here we propose to explore how the quench-induced emergent dynamical topology evolves under dynamical noise and uncover novel dynamical topological physics beyond equilibrium counterparts. We develop an analytic theory and show that for weak noise, the quantum dynamics induced by quenching an initial trivial phase to the Chern insulating regime exhibits robust emergent topology on certain momentum subspaces called band-inversion surfaces (BISs).The dynamical topology is protected by the minimal oscillation frequency over BISs, mimicking a bulk gap of the dynamical phase. Two novel types of dynamical transitions classified by distinct exceptional points or rings are predicted if increasing the noise to critical strength, with critical points being exactly obtained. At the exceptional points on the BISs the minimal oscillation frequency vanishes, manifesting the dynamical bulk-gap closing, beyond which the dynamical topology breaks down.Interestingly, we predict a sweet spot region of the transition, in which the dynamical topology survives surprisingly at an arbitrarily strong noise regime. This work unveils novel universal physics of dynamical topology under dynamical noise, which can be probed with control in experiment.

Topological invariant in quench dynamics

Chao Yang, Shu Chen

In this review, we give a brief review on the recent progress in the theoretical research of quench dynamics in topological band systems. Beginning with two band models, we introduce conception of dynamical Chern number and give the connection between the dynamical Chern number and topological invariant in the corresponding equilibrium systems. Then by studying the 1 + 1 dimensional parent Hamiltonian, we show the complete dynamical classification of Altland-Zirnbauer classes, and show the crossing of entanglement spectrum as a feature of dynamical bulk edge correspondence. Furthermore, we consider the impact of the disorder and band dispersion. At last, we show the experimental simulation of dynamical Chern number by a superconducting qubit system.

Criticality and Quench Dynamics at the Anderson Transition of a Chern Insulator

Lara Ulčakar, Jernej Mravlje, G. Lemut +1 more

We study the critical properties of the topological Anderson phase transition in a strongly disordered Chern insulator, separating the topological phase from a trivial Anderson insulator. We show that the transition is characterized by a non-zero electrical conductance and by the emergence of a critical length scale in the real-space profile of the local Chern marker. From this, we extract the correlation-length and the dynamical critical exponents, which are consistent with those of non-interacting models of the integer quantum Hall effect. We then ramp the disorder strength across the transition and study the ensuing dynamics. In contrast to clean topological systems, we find that the excitation density does not follow the Kibble-Zurek scaling. The non-equilibrium length scale associated with the local Chern marker is decoupled from the generation of excitations. For studied system sizes, we find it to be close to the Kibble-Zurek prediction for the topological-to-trivial quench, while it deviates from it for the reverse direction.
