Abstract

Utilizing the unbiased time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group technique, we examine the photoemission spectra in the extended Falicov-Kimball model at zero and finite temperatures, particularly with regard to the excitonic insulator state most likely observed in the quasi-one-dimensional material Ta _2 2 NiSe _5 5 . Working with infinite boundary conditions, we are able to simulate all dynamical correlation functions directly in the thermodynamic limit. For model parameters best suited for Ta _2 2 NiSe _5 5 the photoemission spectra show a weak but clearly visible two-peak structure, around the Fermi momenta k\simeq\pm k_{F} k ≃ ± k F , which suggests that Ta _2 2 NiSe _5 5 develops an excitonic insulator of BCS-like type. At higher temperatures, the leakage of the conduction-electron band beyond the Fermi energy becomes distinct, which provides a possible explanation for the bare non-interacting band structure seen in time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments.

Photoinduced metallization of excitonic insulators

Satoshi Ejima, Florian Lange, Holger Fehske

Utilizing the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization-group technique, we numerically prove photoinduced pairing states in the extended Falicov-Kimball model (EFKM) at half-filling, both with and without internal SU(2) symmetry. In the time-dependent photoemission spectra, an extra band appears above the Fermi energy after pulse irradiation, indicating an insulator-to-metal transition. Even in the absence of the SU(2) structure, the pair correlations are enhanced during the pump, and afterwards they decrease over time. This implies the possible metallization of ${\mathrm{Ta}}_{2}\mathrm{Ni}{\mathrm{Se}}_{5}$, a strong candidate for an excitonic insulator material, for which the EFKM is considered to be the minimal theoretical model. Simulating the photoemission with optimized pulse parameters, we demonstrate a photoinduced quantum phase transition, in accord with recent findings in time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments on ${\mathrm{Ta}}_{2}\mathrm{Ni}{\mathrm{Se}}_{5}$.

Finite-Temperature Properties of Excitonic Condensation in the Extended Falicov–Kimball Model: Cluster Mean-Field-Theory Approach

Masahiro Kadosawa, Satoshi Nishimoto, Koudai Sugimoto +1 more

We study the electron-hole pair (or excitonic) condensation in the extended Falicov-Kimball model at finite temperatures based on the cluster mean-field-theory approach, where we make the grand canonical exact-diagonalization analysis of small clusters using the sine-square deformation function. We thus calculate the ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams of the model, as well as its optical conductivity and single-particle spectra, thereby clarifying how the preformed pair states appear in the strong-coupling regime of excitonic insulators. We compare our results with experiment on Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$.

BCS-BEC crossover in the extended Falicov-Kimball model: Variational cluster approach

Kazuhiro Seki, R. Eder, Y. Ohta

We study the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the excitonic insulator state induced by the Coulomb interaction $U$ in the two-dimensional extended Falicov-Kimball model. Using the variational cluster approximation (VCA) and Hartree-Fock approximation (HFA), we evaluate the order parameter, single-particle excitation gap, momentum distribution functions, coherence length of excitons, and single-particle and anomalous excitation spectra as functions of $U$ at zero temperature. We find that in the weak-to-intermediate coupling regime, the Fermi surface plays an essential role and calculated results can be understood in close correspondence with the BCS theory, whereas in the strong-coupling regime, the Fermi surface plays no role and results are consistent with the picture of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Moreover, we find that HFA works well in both the weak- and strong-coupling regimes, and that the difference between the results of VCA and HFA mostly appears in the intermediate-coupling regime. The reason for this is discussed from a viewpoint of the self-energy. We thereby clarify the excitonic insulator state that typifies either a BCS condensate of electron-hole pairs (weak-coupling regime) or a BEC of preformed excitons (strong-coupling regime).

DMRG study of exciton condensation in the extended Falicov-Kimball model

Farkašovský

The formation and condensation of excitonic bound states of conduction-band electrons and valence-band holes surely belongs to one of the most exciting ideas of contemporary solid state physics. In this short review we present the latest progress in this field reached by the density-matrix-renormalization-group (DMRG) calculations within various extensions of the Falicov-Kimball model.Particular attention is paid to a description of crucial mechanisms (interactions) that affect the stability of the excitonic phase, and namely: (i) the interband d-f Coulomb interaction, (ii) the f -electron hopping, (iii) the nonlocal hybridization with odd and even parity, (iv) combined effects of the local and nonlocal hybridization, (v) the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction between d and f electrons and (vi) the correlated hopping. The relevance of numerical results obtained within different extensions of the Falicov-Kimball model for a description of the real d-f materials is widely discussed.

Thermodynamics of the one-dimensional half-filled-band Falicov-Kimball model

Cláudio Andrade Macedo, L. G. Azevedo, André M. C. Souza

In order to contribute to understand well the finite-temperature properties of the Falicov-Kimball model, we study the temperature dependence of the specific heat, internal energy, entropy, and mean square fluctuation of the difference between the ion and electron numbers, and of the correlation functions of the one-dimensional half-filled-band Falicov-Kimball model. For this purpose we used the method of small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations with the application of the grand canonical ensemble and of extrapolation techniques to the infinite chain. Our results show that the examined Falicov-Kimball model exhibits behavior of alternate electron-ion short-range ordering at low temperature, and gradual metal-insulator transition at high temperature, but, does not exhibit the crossing point of the specific heat curves, characteristic of the Hubbard model.

Order, Criticality, and Excitations in the Extended Falicov-Kimball Model

Satoshi Ejima, Tatsuya Kaneko, Y. Ohta +1 more

Using exact numerical techniques, we investigate the nature of excitonic (electron-hole) bound states and the development of exciton coherence in the one-dimensional half-filled extended Falicov-Kimball model. The ground-state phase diagram of the model exhibits, besides band-insulator and staggered orbital ordered phases, an excitonic insulator (EI) with power-law correlations. The criticality of the EI state shows up in the von Neumann entropy. The anomalous spectral function and condensation amplitude provide the binding energy and coherence length of the electron-hole pairs which, on their part, point towards a Coulomb interaction driven crossover from BCS-like electron-hole pairing fluctuations to tightly bound excitons. We show that while a mass imbalance between electrons and holes does not affect the location of the BCS-BEC crossover regime, it favors staggered orbital ordering to the disadvantage of the EI. Within the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) regime, the quasiparticle dispersion develops a flat valence-band top, in accord with the experimental finding for Ta2NiSe5.
