Abstract

Quantum spin liquids hosting Majorana excitations have recently experienced renewed interest for potential applications to topological quantum computation. Performing logical operations with reduced poisoning requires to localize such quasiparticles at specific point of a device, with energies that are well defined and inside the bulk energy gap. These are two defining features of second-order topological insulators (SOTIs). Here, we show two spin-$3/2$ models that support quantum spin liquid phases characterized by Majorana excitations. One of them, defined on a square lattice, is analytically solvable thanks to a theorem by Lieb and behaves as a known SOTI. We show that, depending on the values of spin couplings, it is possible to localize either fermions or Majorana particles at its corners. The second model, defined on a kagome lattice, exhibits coexisting topologies, which reflect in a complex pattern of edge states. For certain choices of spin couplings, edge states can localize at one of the corners of a finite kagome lattice with flat edges.

Majorana corner modes in a second-order Kitaev spin liquid

Vatsal Dwivedi, Ciarán Hickey, Tim Eschmann +1 more

Higher-order topological insulators are distinguished by the existence of topologically protected modes with codimension two or higher. Here, we report the manifestation of a second-order topological insulator in a two dimensional frustrated quantum magnet, which exhibits topological corner modes. Our exactly solvable model is a generalization of the Kitaev honeycomb model to the Shastry-Sutherland lattice that, besides a chiral spin liquid phase, exhibits a gapped spin liquid with Majorana corner modes, which are protected by two mirror symmetries. This second-order Kitaev spin liquid remains stable in the presence of thermal fluctuations and undergoes a finite-temperature phase transition evidenced in large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations.

Compact localized fermions and Ising anyons in a chiral spin liquid

Tim Bauer, Johannes Reuther

Quasiparticle hybridization remains a major challenge to realizing and controlling exotic states of matter in existing quantum simulation platforms. We report the absence of hybridization for compact localized states (CLS) emerging in the chiral spin liquid described by the Yao-Kivelson model. The CLS form due to destructive quantum interference at fine-tuned coupling constants and populate perfectly flat quasiparticle bands on an effective kagome lattice. Using a formalism for general Majorana-hopping Hamiltonians, we derive exact expressions for CLS for various flux configurations and both for the topological and trivial phases of the model. In addition to finite-energy matter fermions with characteristic spin-spin correlations, we construct compact localized Majorana zero modes attached to $π$-flux excitations, which enable non-Abelian braiding of Ising anyons with minimal separation. Our results inform the quantum simulation of topologically ordered states of matter and open avenues for exploring flat-band physics in quantum spin liquids.

Topological Quantum Spin Liquids in a Ladder with Majorana fermions and p-wave Superconductivity

Magali Korolev, Fan Yang, Erik Schwartz Sørensen +1 more

In this article, we address the possibility of topological quantum spin liquids with only short-range (spin) correlations in the whole phase diagram in a ladder system, through an exactly solvable model which represents a generalization of the two-dimensional Kitaev honeycomb spin model to a ribbon geometry. This system gives rise to $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fields emerging in a static way in the ground state through Majorana fermions which then produce either $0$ or $π$ flux. Through a quantum field theory perspective, mathematical and Density Matrix Renormalization Group results, we present our progress on the geometrical, topological and physical classification of this model through observables navigating on the whole phase diagram presenting three spin-liquid phases with a spin gap and a metallic phase in the sense of Majorana fermions. We propose a bulk-edge correspondence revealing the presence of protected zero-energy Majorana fermions at the edge in the phases with a gap and revealing also the presence of itinerant Majorana fermions in the bulk in the topological liquid phase. The proposed approach allows us to distinguish between properties of the brickwall ladder giving rise to a special line and those of the square ladder allowing for the gapless Majorana liquid phase. This model gives some hope on finding solutions for topological quantum spin models, e.g. with $π$ flux, on a square lattice geometry. This approach also allows for a correspondence onto models of topological superconductivity.

Topological Spinon Semimetals and Gapless Boundary States in Three Dimensions

Robert Schaffer, Eric Kin-Ho Lee, Yuan-Ming Lu +1 more

Recently, there has been much effort in understanding topological phases of matter with gapless bulk excitations, which are characterized by topological invariants and protected intrinsic boundary states. Here we show that topological semimetals of Majorana fermions arise in exactly solvable Kitaev spin models on a series of three-dimensional lattices. The ground states of these models are quantum spin liquids with gapless nodal spectra of bulk Majorana fermion excitations. It is shown that these phases are topologically stable as long as certain discrete symmetries are protected. The corresponding topological indices and the gapless boundary states are explicitly computed to support these results. In contrast to previous studies of noninteracting systems, the phases discussed in this work are novel examples of gapless topological phases in interacting spin systems.

Symmetry-protected gapless Z2 spin liquids

Yuan-Ming Lu

Despite rapid progress in understanding gapped topological states, much less is known about gapless topological phases of matter, especially in strongly correlated electrons. In this work, we discuss a large class of robust gapless quantum spin liquids in frustrated magnets made of half-integer spins, which are described by gapless fermionic spinons coupled to dynamical ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge fields. Requiring $\text{U}(1)$ spin conservation, time-reversal, and certain space-group symmetries, we show that certain spinon symmetry fractionalization class necessarily leads to a gapless spectrum. These gapless excitations are stable against any perturbations, as long as the required symmetries are preserved. Applying these gapless criteria to spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ systems on square, triangular, and kagome lattices, we show that all gapped symmetric ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin liquids in Abrikosov-fermion representation can also be realized in Schwinger-boson representation. This leads to 64 gapped ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ spin liquids on square lattice, and 8 gapped states on both kagome and triangular lattices.

Topological second-order spin-3/2 liquids with hinge Fermi arcs

Y. X. Zhao, Yen-Wen Lu, Shengyuan A. Yang

We present an exactly solvable spin-3/2 model defined on a pentacoordinated three-dimensional graphite lattice, which realizes a novel quantum spin liquid with second-order topology. The exact solutions are described by Majorana fermions coupled to a background $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field, whose ground-state flux configuration gives rise to an emergent off-centered spacetime inversion symmetry. The symmetry protects topologically nontrivial band structures for the Majorana fermions, particularly including nodal-line semimetal phases with twofold topological charges: the second Stiefel-Whitney number and the quantized Berry phase. The former leads to rich topological phenomena on the system boundaries. There are two nodal-line semimetal phases hosting hinge Fermi arcs located on different hinges, and they are separated by a critical Dirac semimetal state with surface helical Fermi arcs. In addition, we show that rich symmetry/topology can be explored in our model by simply varying the lattice or interaction arrangement. As an example, we discuss how to achieve a topological gapped phase with surface Dirac points.
