Abstract

The PT -symmetric non-Hermitian systems have been widely studied and explored both in theory and in experiment due to their various interesting features. In this work we focus on the dynamical features of a triplequbit system, one of which evolves under a local PT -symmetric Hamiltonian. An abnormal dynamic pattern in the entropy evolution process is identified that presents a parameter-dependent stable state, determined by the non-Hermiticity of Hamiltonian in the broken phase of PT symmetry. The entanglement and mutual information of a two-body subsystem can increase beyond the initial values, which do not exist in the Hermitian and two-qubit PT -symmetric systems. Moreover, an experimental demonstration of the stable states in non-Hermitian systems with nonzero entropy and entanglement is realized on a four-qubit quantum simulator with nuclear spins. Our work reveals the distinctive dynamic features in the triple-qubit PT -symmetric system and paves the way for practical quantum simulation of multiparty non-Hermitian system on quantum computers.

Non-Hermitian Quantum Rényi Entropy Dynamics in Anyonic-PT Symmetric Systems

Zhihang Liu, Chao Zheng

We reveal the continuous change of information dynamics patterns in anyonic-PT symmetric systems that originates from the continuity of anyonic-PT symmetry. We find there are three information dynamics patterns for anyonic-PT symmetric systems: damped oscillations with an overall decrease (increase) and asymptotically stable damped oscillations, which are three-fold degenerate and are distorted using the Hermitian quantum Rényi entropy or distinguishability. It is the normalization of the non-unitary evolved density matrix that causes the degeneracy and distortion. We give a justification for non-Hermitian quantum Rényi entropy being negative. By exploring the mathematics and physical meaning of the negative entropy in open quantum systems, we connect negative non-Hermitian quantum Rényi entropy and negative quantum conditional entropy, paving the way to rigorously investigate negative entropy in open quantum systems.

Quasi-parity-time symmetric dynamics in periodically driven two-level non-Hermitian system

Zhou Hu, Zhao‐Yun Zeng, Jia Tang +1 more

In recent years, there have been intensive studies of non-Hermitian physics and parity–time (PT) symmetry due to their fundamental importance in theory and outstanding applications. A distinctive character in PT-symmetric system is phase transition (spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking), i.e. an all-real energy spectrum changes into an all-complex one when the non-Hermitian parameter exceeds a certain threshold. However, the conditions for PT-symmetric system with real energy spectrum to occur are rather restrictive. The generalization of PT-symmetric potentials to wider classes of non-PT-symmetric complex potentials with all-real energy spectra is a currently important endeavor. A simple PT-symmetric two-level Floquet quantum system is now being actively explored, because it holds potential for the realization of non-unitary single-qubit quantum gate. However, studies of the evolution dynamics of non-PT-symmetric two-level non-Hermitian Floquet quantum system are still relatively rare. In this paper, we investigate the non-Hermitian physics of a periodically driven non-PT-symmetric two-level quantum system. By phase-space analysis, we find that there exist so-called pseudo fixed points in phase space representing the Floquet solutions with fixed population difference and a time-dependent relative phase between the two levels. According to these pseudo fixed points, we analytically construct a non-unitary evolution operator and then explore the dynamic behaviors of the non-PT-symmetric two-level quantum system in different parameter regions. We confirm both analytically and numerically that the two-level non-Hermitian Floquet quantum system, although it is non-parity-time-symmetric, still features a phase transition with the quasienergy spectrum changing from all-real to all-complex energy spectrum, just like the PT symmetric system. Furthermore, we reveal that a novel phenomenon called quasi-PT symmetric dynamics occurs in the time evolution process. The quasi-PT symmetric dynamics is so named in our paper, in the sense that the time-evolution of population probabilities in the non-PT-symmetric two-level system satisfies fully the time-space symmetry (PT symmetry), while time-evolution of the quantum state (containing the phase) does not meet such a PT symmetry, due to the fact that time-evolution of the phases of the probability amplitudes on the two levels violates the requirement for the PT symmetry.

Distinguish between typical non-Hermitian quantum systems by entropy dynamics

Chao Zheng, Daili Li

Non-Hermitian (NH) quantum systems attract research interest increasingly in recent years, among which the PT-symmetric, P-pseudo-Hermitian and their anti-symmetric counterpart systems are focused much more. In this work, we extend the usage of entropy to distinguish time-evolutions of different classes and phases of typical NH-systems. In detail, we investigate the entropy dynamics of two-level NH-systems after quantum decoherence induced by single-qubit projective measurements, finding that it depends on both the initial states and the selection of the computational bases of the measurements. In a general case, we show how to distinguish all the eight phases of the above NH-systems step by step, in which process three different initial states are necessary if the basis of measurement is fixed. We propose how the distinguishing process is realized in quantum simulation, in which quantum tomography is not needed. Our investigations can be applied to judge phase transitions of non-Hermitian systems.

Quantum dynamics of two $XX$ interacting PT-symmetric non-Hermitian qubits: enhancement of quantum annealing

Yana Komissarova, Mikhail V. Fistul, Ilya M. Eremin

Quantum information platforms enable analog quantum simulations, such as quantum annealing, offering a promising route to solving complex combinatorial optimization problems. Here, we propose a quantum information architecture based on networks of interacting parity-time (PT)-symmetric non-Hermitian qubits. While the dynamics of individual PT-symmetric qubits have been experimentally demonstrated across multiple platforms including NV centers, superconducting circuits, and trapped-ion systems yet coherent dynamics in interacting systems remain largely unexplored. To address this issue we theoretically investigate stationary and time-dependent Hamiltonians relevant to quantum annealing using a minimal model of two interacting XX-coupled PT-symmetric non-Hermitian qubits. We analyze both symmetry-preserving and symmetry-broken regimes and demonstrate that adding even tiny PT-symmetric non-Hermitian terms in the qubits Hamiltonian allows to greatly enhance the probability of reaching the ground state after annealing.

Experimental simulation of the parity-time symmetric dynamics using photonic qubits

Wei‐Chao Gao, Chao Zheng, Lu Liu +2 more

The concept of parity-time (PT) symmetry originates from the framework of quantum mechanics, where if the Hamiltonian operator satisfies the commutation relation with the parity and time operators, it shows real energy spectrum. Recently, PT symmetry was introduced into various systems, such as optics, electronic circuits, acoustics, and other classical fields to further study the dynamical behaviors of the Hamiltonian and the energies. To focus on the dynamical evolution of the quantum state, here we experimentally studied the dynamical evolution of a two-level quantum system under the PT symmetric Hamiltonian using single-photon system. By enlarging the system using ancillary qubit and encoding the subsystem under the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian with post-selection, the evolution of the state can be characterized with a high fidelity. Owing to the effectively operation of the dilation method, our work provides a route for further exploiting the exotic properties of PT symmetric Hamiltonian for quantum simulation and quantum information processing.

Entanglement dynamics in anti- PT -symmetric systems

Yu-Liang Fang, Jun‐Long Zhao, Dong‐Xu Chen +5 more

In the past years, many efforts have been made to study various noteworthy phenomena in both parity-time $(\mathcal{PT})$ and anti-parity-time $(\mathcal{APT})$ symmetric systems. However, entanglement dynamics in $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric systems has not previously been investigated in both theory and experiments. Here, we investigate the entanglement evolution of two qubits in an $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric system. In the $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric unbroken regime, our theoretical simulations demonstrate the periodic oscillations of entanglement when each qubit evolves identically, while the nonperiodic oscillations of entanglement when each qubit evolves differently. In particular, when each qubit evolves near the exceptional point in the $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric unbroken regime, there exist entanglement sudden vanishing and revival. Moreover, our simulations demonstrate rapid decay and delayed death of entanglement provided one qubit evolves in the $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric broken regime. In this work, we also perform an experiment with a linear optical setup. The experimental results agree well with our theoretical simulation results. Our findings reveal novel phenomena of entanglement evolution in the $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric system and opens a new direction for future studies on the dynamics of quantum entanglement in multiqubit $\mathcal{APT}$-symmetric systems or other non-Hermitian quantum systems.
