Chiral bosonic topological insulator on the honeycomb lattice with anisotropic interactions

Abstract

We study hard-core bosons on the honeycomb lattice in the presence of anisotropic nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions. Using a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) technique, we extract the phase diagram of the model in terms of the filling and the anisotropy. At half-filling we find a dimer insulator phase near maximum anisotropy that is characterized by a finite topological entanglement entropy $ln(2)/2$, indicative of a fractional quantum Hall state for bosons. We identify the presence of edge states and derive a QMC-based method to extract and verify their chirality. Remarkably, this phase arises in the absence of magnetic flux and without explicit lattice frustration.

Strong to weak topological interacting phase transition of bosons on a lattice

Amrita Ghosh, Eytan Grosfeld

We study hard-core bosons on the honeycomb lattice subjected to anisotropic nearest-neighbor hopping along with anisotropic nearest-neighbor repulsion, using a quantum Monte Carlo technique. At half filling, we find a transition from strong topological interacting order to weak topological interacting order as a function of the hopping anisotropy. The strong topological phase is characterized by a finite topological entanglement entropy, while the weak topological order is identified with a nontrivial value of the bipartite entanglement entropy. Some of the order parameters and their derivatives demonstrate abrupt changes when varying the parameters controlling the lattice anisotropies, thus revealing the nature of this topological interacting phase transition.

Weak topological insulating phases of hard-core-bosons on the honeycomb lattice

Amrita Ghosh, Eytan Grosfeld

We study the phases of hard-core bosons on a two-dimensional periodic honeycomb lattice in the presence of an on-site potential with alternating sign along the different y-layers of the lattice. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations supported by analytical calculations, we identify a weak topological insulator, characterized by a zero Chern number but non-zero Berry phase, which is manifested at either density 1/4 or 3/4, as determined by the potential pattern. Additionally, a charge-density-wave insulator is observed at 1/2-filling, whereas the phase diagram at intermediate densities is occupied by a superfluid phase. The weak topological insulator is further shown to be robust against any amount of nearest-neighbor repulsion, as well as weak next-nearest-neighbor repulsion. The experimental realization of our model is feasible in an optical lattice setup.

Phase diagram of interacting bosons on the honeycomb lattice

Stefan Weßel

We study the ground-state properties of repulsively interacting bosons on the honeycomb lattice using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In the hard-core limit, the half-filled system develops long-ranged diagonal order for sufficiently strong nearest-neighbor repulsion. This staggered solid melts at a first-order quantum phase transition into the superfluid phase, without the presence of any intermediate supersolid phase. Within the superfluid phase, both the superfluid density and the compressibility exhibit local minima near the particle (hole) density of one quarter, while the density and the condensate fraction show inflection points in this region. Relaxing the hard-core constraint, supersolid phases emerge for soft-core bosons. The suppression of the superfluid density is found to persist for sufficiently large, finite on-site repulsion.

Edge excitations in fractional Chern insulators

Wei-Wei Luo, Wen-Chao Chen, Yi-Fei Wang +1 more

Recent theoretical papers have demonstrated the realization of fractional quantum anomalous Hall states (also called fractional Chern insulators) in topological flat band lattice models without an external magnetic field. Such newly proposed lattice systems play a vital role in obtaining a large class of fractional topological phases. Here we report the exact numerical studies of edge excitations for such systems in a disk geometry loaded with hard-core bosons, which will serve as a more viable experimental probe for such topologically ordered states. We find convincing numerical evidence of a series of edge excitations characterized by the chiral Luttinger liquid theory for the bosonic fractional Chern insulators in both the honeycomb disk Haldane model and the kagome-lattice disk model. We further verify these current-carrying chiral edge states by inserting a central flux to test their compressibility.

Topological bosonic states on ribbons of a honeycomb lattice

Yi‐Ping Wang, Xingchuan Zhu, Kefei Zou +2 more

The topological properties of hardcore bosons on ribbons of honeycomb lattice are studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We map out a rich phase diagram with the superfluid and insulator phases at various fillings. Particularly, it is revealed that the insulator state at half filling is a topological bosonic state, which is characterized by a nontrivial Berry phase and a pair of end states. We provide an intuitive picture to understand this topological bosonic insulator state by showing that it can be adiabatically mapped to a topological fermionic model. It is also shown that the topological end states are robust against weak interactions beyond the hardcore repulsion. Our results can be simulated by using bosonic cold atoms trapped in designed optical lattices.

Phase diagram of dipolar hard-core bosons on a honeycomb lattice

Takashi Nakafuji, Takeshi Ito, Yuya Nagamori +1 more

In this paper, we study phase diagrams of dipolar hard-core boson gases on a honeycomb lattice. The system is described by the Haldane-Bose-Hubbard model with complex hopping amplitudes and nearest-neighbor repulsion. By using the slave-particle representation of the hard-core bosons and also the path-integral quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the system and show that the systems have a rich phase diagram. There are Mott, superfluid, chiral superfluid, and sublattice chiral superfluid phases as well as the density-wave phase. We also found a coexisting phase of superfluid and chiral superfluid. Critical behaviors of the phase transitions are also clarified.
