Exact matrix model for generalized Ising model

Abstract

The Ising model was generalized to a system of cells interacting exclusively by presence of shared spins. Within the cells there are interactions of any complexity, the simplest intracell interactions come down to the Ising model. The system may be not only one-dimensional but also two-dimensional, three-dimensional, etc. The purpose of the paper is to develop an approach to constructing the exact matrix model for any considered system in the simplest way. Without this, it is almost impossible to analyze complex systems. After trying a lot of ways, the approach has been simplified to suit first year students. Using the approach, the exact matrix model for a two-dimensional generalized Ising model was constructed. The following approaches have already been developed to obtaining and analyzing partition function and various thermodynamic functions. They will be considered in following papers.

A New Exact Method for Solving the Two-Dimensional Ising Model

S. Ranjbar, Gholamabbas Parsafar

We have used the two-dimensional Ising model with a limited number of rows, but with the coordination number of four for each site, to set up the transfer matrix for the model. From the solution of such a matrix, the exact thermodynamic properties have been obtained for the model with a definite number of rows, n . We have solved the matrix for n ≤ 7 and n ≤ 10 in the presence and absence of a magnetic field, respectively. On the basis of such solutions, we have proposed an analytical expression for the partition function of the model with any number of rows in the absence of a magnetic field. The proposed expression becomes more accurate when n is larger, in such a way that it becomes very accurate for n ≥ 8 and is exact for n → ∞. Our results show that the singularity of the specific heat occurs only for the model with infinite number of rows. In the presence of a magnetic field, the solution to the matrixes is too complicated to propose a general analytical expression for the partition function of the model with any number of rows. However, our exact solution for the model with n = 4, 5, 6, and 7 reveals an important point that such results are independent of n when the field−spin interaction energy is almost equal to or larger than that of the spin−spin interaction.

Transfer Matrix of the Two-dimensional Ising Model

Giuseppe Mussardo

Abstract In this chapter we study the solution of the two-dimensional Ising model by means of the transfer matrix. Unlike the methods discussed in the previous chapter, the transfer matrix approach has greater generality and can used to solve exactly other two-dimensional models. Even if the general ideas behind this approach have been explained in Chapter 2 by means of the one-dimensional case, their application to the two-dimensional cases requires more powerful and sophisticated mathematical tools: for instance, the study the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix in the Ising model for T = Tcneeds to employ elliptic functions. The same is also true for other models. In order to present in the simplest possible way the main lines of this method, in the following we focus attention only on the solution of the model at T = Tcbecause this case can be analyzed in terms of simple trigonometric functions.

Block-diagonalizable two-dimensional generalized Ising systems (BD2DGIS): the free energy

Vadym Sakhno, Mykola Sakhno

The paper is a continuation of arXiv:2012.10364, where the approach was developed to constructing the exact matrix model for any generalized Ising system, and such model was constructed for certain 2d system. In this paper, the properties of the model are specified for light block diagonalization. A corresponding example is considered. For the example, general exact partition function is obtained and analysed. The analysis shows that the free energy does not depend on the amount of rows with a large amount of cells. For the example with light boundary conditions, the partition function is obtained and the specific free energy per spin is plotted.

Combinatorial approach to exactly solve the 1D Ising model

Swarnadeep Seth

Abstract The Ising model is a well known statistical model which can be solved exactly by various methods. The most familiar one is the transfer matrix method. Sometimes it can be difficult to approach the open boundary case rather than periodic boundary ones in higher dimensions. But physically it is more intuitive to study the open boundary case, as it gives a closer view of the real system. We have introduced a new method called the pairing method to determine the exact partition function for the simplest case, a 1D Ising lattice. This method simplifies the problem's complexities and reduces it to a pure combinatorial problem. The study also reveals that it is possible to apply this pairing method in the case of a 2D square lattice. The obtained results agree perfectly with the values in the literature and this new approach provides an algorithmic insight to deal with such problems.

Exact Solution and Correlation Functions of Generalized Double Ising Chains

Pavel Khrapov, Stepan Shchurenkov

In this paper the exact solution and correlation functions for a double-chain Ising model with multi-spin interactions and symmetric Hamiltonian density are obtained. The study employs the transfer matrix method to derive fundamental thermodynamic characteristics of the system. The main results include exact expressions for the partition function, free energy, internal energy, specific heat capacity, magnetization, susceptibility, and entropy in a strip of finite length and in the thermodynamic limit. The work provides explicit formulas for the eigenvalues and shows structure of eigenvectors of the transfer matrix. The expression for magnetization in the thermodynamic limit using components of normalized eigenvector corresponding to the maximum eigenvalue is obtained. A detailed analysis is conducted for a special case of interactions involving all kinds of two- and four-spin interactions. This gives the simplified formula for free energy, it is calculated using the root of quadratic equation. Using special relation between parameters the solution for gonihedric model on the plane is obtained. The research reveals properties of the system, including specific features of ground states and phase diagram characteristics. Particular attention is given to the behavior of physical quantities near frustration points and the investigation of spin correlation functions. Plots of physical characteristics, including inverse correlation length, illustrating the obtained results are constructed.

Form of the exact partition function for the generalized Ising Model

T. R. S. Prasanna

The problem of N interacting spins on a lattice is equivalent to one of N clusters linked in a specific manner. The energy of any configuration of spins can be expressed in terms of the energy levels of this cluster. A new expression is obtained for the probability of occurrence of any configuration. A closed form expression is obtained for the partition function per spin in terms of the energy levels of this cluster with the degeneracies being a function of temperature. On physical grounds it is suggested to be the form of the exact partition function per spin. The partition functions of Ising-like systems all have a common form. For the 3D Ising model seven functions need to be determined to describe the partition function completely. The key to understanding second order phase transitions and critical phenomena lies in the temperature dependence of various degeneracies. It is necessary to develop new techniques to determine the partition function that account for this temperature dependence, as it would represent the underlying physics correctly.
