Dual Toffoli and Peres-reversible gates

Claudio Moraga

Abstract

The paper introduces dual Toffoli and Peres reversible gates, which operate under disjunctive control, and shows their functionality based on the Barenco et al. quantum model. Both uniform and mixed polarity are considered for the controls. Rewriting rules are presented, which provide a possible reduction of the number of gates and quantum cost of reversible (sub)circuits using standard Toffoli or Peres gates. Finally, a Clifford+T realization of a dual Toffoli and a dual Peres gate is shown, which may be used when mapping reversible circuits to the IBM quantum computers.

Ternary Toffoli-type Reversible Gates: Control Alternatives and Quantum Models

Claudio Moraga

Toffoli-type reversible gates are analyzed. Peres-type ternary gates are introduced for the first time. Conjunctive, disjunctive, majority, XOR types and hybrid control strategies are disclosed. Barenco-type of quantum models for these cases are developed.

Low quantum cost realization of generalized peres and toffoli gates with multiple-control signals

Marek Szyprowski, Paweł Kerntopf

Multiple-control Toffoli gates are basic building blocks for reversible and quantum circuits. 3-bit Peres gate can be considered as a pair of 3-bit and 2-bit Toffoli gates, which can be implemented with fewer elementary quantum gates (what defines a metric called quantum cost) than the total number of elementary quantum gates required by each of Toffoli gates implemented separately. Due to this property, Peres gates are often used for quantum cost reduction of reversible circuits. This paper introduces a generalization of the Peres gate with n > 2 control signals. For such generalized gates corresponding quantum circuits are presented. The realizations have quantum cost of n2and require no ancillary signals. The proposed designs are built from elementary quantum gates, which consist of NOT, controlled NOT, controlled `square-roots-of-NOT' (known as controlled V/V+gates) and controlled `higher roots-of-NOT' (up to 2n-1-roots-of-NOT). The obtained quantum circuits are not entangled. The proposed designs are used to construct Toffoli gates of n control signals with quantum cost of 2n2- 2n + 1 and using no ancillary signals. This is an improvement in comparison with 2n+1- 3 and 48n2+ O(n), which are quantum costs of the known designs of the multiple-control Toffoli gate without ancillary signals.

Technology Mapping of Reversible Circuits to Clifford+T Quantum Circuits

Nabila Abdessaied, Matthew Amy, Mathias Soeken +1 more

The Clifford+T quantum gate library has attracted much interest in the design of quantum circuits, particularly since the contained operations can be implemented in a fault-tolerant manner. Since fault tolerant implementations of the T gate have very high latency, synthesis and optimization are aiming at minimizing the number of T stages, referred to as the T-depth. In this paper, we present an approach to map mixed polarity multiple controlled Toffoli gates into Clifford+T quantum circuits. Our approach is based on the multiple control Toffoli mapping algorithms proposed by Barenco et al., which are given T-depth optimized Clifford+T translations. Experiments show that our approach leads to a significant T-depth reduction of 54% on average.

A study of optimal 4-bit reversible circuit synthesis from mixed-polarity Toffoli gates

Marek Szyprowski, Paweł Kerntopf

Optimal synthesis of reversible circuits is a very hard task. In 2010, a method and a tool of practical usage for finding optimal circuits built from multi-control Toffoli gates for any 4-bit reversible specification were finally developed. In 2011 we published an extension to the algorithm, which allows to reduce the quantum cost of the resulting circuits. In this paper we present another extension to this approach. Namely, we have extended the reversible gate library to mixed-polarity multi-control Toffoli gates (i.e. with both positive and negative controls). Our experimental results for the known reversible benchmarks show that using mixed-polarity Toffoli gates gives significant savings in gate count. The paper presents standard computational experiments for circuit synthesis. These results have implications in testing synthesis algorithms for reversible mixed-polarity circuits and quantum circuits.

Reversible circuit optimization using modified toffoli templates

Mridula J Deshpande, H. V. Jayashree, V.K. Agrawal

Reversible gates are gaining popularity in the field of circuit synthesis due to their property of having lower power loss and reduced dissipation of power as heat. These low power design models need to have better optimization properties. In this paper, we have ventured into the template and rule based optimization process. While most reversible netlists are built using the standard Toffoli gates, the proposed Modified Toffoli Gate has been used to achieve optimization. In this paper, the quantum realization of mixed control Modified Toffoli Gate and negative control Modified Toffoli Gates are proposed. Few templates and rules for transforming the original Toffoli network to the Modified Toffoli network are also proposed. This optimization yields a better quantum cost and gate count when compared to that of it's Toffoli counterpart.

Improved quantum cost for n -bit Toffoli gates

Dmitri A Maslov, Gerhard W. Dueck

An n-bit Toffoli gate quantum circuit based on the realisation proposed by Barenco et al., where some of the Toffoli gates in their construction are replaced with Peres gates, is presented. This results in a significant cost reduction. The main contribution of this presentation is a quantum circuit which simulates the (m+1)-bit Toffoli gate with 32m−120 elementary quantum gates and one garbage bit which is passed unchanged.
