Abstract

We study whether one can write a Matrix Product Density Operator (MPDO) as the Gibbs state of a quasi-local parent Hamiltonian. We conjecture this is the case for generic MPDO and give supporting evidences. To investigate the locality of the parent Hamiltonian, we take the approach of checking whether the quantum conditional mutual information decays exponentially. The MPDO we consider are constructed from a chain of 1-input/2-output (`Y-shaped') completely-positive maps, i.e., the MPDO have a local purification. We derive an upper bound on the conditional mutual information for bistochastic channels and strictly positive channels and show that it decays exponentially if the correctable algebra of the channel is trivial. We also introduce a conjecture on a quantum data processing inequality that implies the exponential decay of the conditional mutual information for every Y-shaped channel with trivial correctable algebra. We additionally investigate a close but nonequivalent cousin: MPDO measured in a local basis. We provide sufficient conditions for the exponential decay of the conditional mutual information of the measured states and numerically confirm they are generically true for certain random MPDO.

Classical restrictions of generic matrix product states are quasi-locally Gibbsian

Yaiza Aragonés-Soria, Johan Åberg, Chae-Yeun Park +1 more

We show that norm squared amplitudes with respect to a local orthonormal basis (the classical restriction) of finite quantum systems on one-dimensional lattices can be exponentially well approximated by Gibbs states of local Hamiltonians (i.e., they are quasi-locally Gibbsian) if the classical conditional mutual information (CMI) of any connected tripartition of the lattice is rapidly decaying in the width of the middle region. For injective matrix product states, we, moreover, show that the classical CMI decays exponentially whenever the collection of matrix product operators satisfies a “purity condition,” a notion previously established in the theory of random matrix products. We, furthermore, show that violation of the purity condition enables a generalized notion of error correction on the virtual space, thus indicating the non-generic nature of such violations. We make this intuition more concrete by constructing a probabilistic model where purity is a typical property. The proof of our main result makes extensive use of the theory of random matrix products and may find applications elsewhere.

Parent Lindbladians for matrix product density operators

Yuhan Liu, Alberto Ruiz-de-Alarcón, Georgios Styliaris +3 more

Understanding quantum phases of matter is a fundamental goal in physics. For pure states, the representatives of phases are the ground states of locally interacting Hamiltonians, which are also renormalization fixed points (RFPs). These RFP states are exactly described by tensor networks. Extending this framework to mixed states, matrix product density operators (MPDOs) that are RFPs are believed to encapsulate mixed-state phases of matter in one dimension, where nontrivial topological phases have already been shown to exist. However, to better motivate the physical relevance of those states, and in particular the physical relevance of the recently found non trivial phases, it remains an open question whether such MPDO RFPs can be realized as steady states of local Lindbladians. In this work, we resolve this question by analytically constructing parent Lindbladians for MPDO RFPs. These Lindbladians are local, frustration free, and exhibit minimal steady-state degeneracy. Interestingly, we find that parent Lindbladians possess a rich structure that distinguishes them from their Hamiltonian counterparts. In particular, we uncover an intriguing connection between the noncommutativity of the Lindbladian terms and the fact that the corresponding MPDO RFP belongs to a nontrivial phase.

Constructing k-local parent Lindbladians for matrix product density operators

Dmytro Bondarenko

Matrix product density operators (MPDOs) are an important class of states with interesting properties. Consequently, it is important to understand how to prepare these states experimentally. One possible way to do this is to design an open system that evolves only towards desired states. A Markovian evolution of a quantum mechanical system can be generally described by a Lindbladian. In this work we develop an algorithm that for a given (small) linear subspace of MPDOs determines if this subspace can be the stable space for some frustration free Lindbladian consisting of only local terms and, if so, outputs a suitable Lindbladian.

Improved estimate of local Markovianity for quantum Gibbs states

Tai Hsuan Yang

We establish improved locally Markovian properties of quantum Gibbs states at every fixed positive temperature. For finite-range interactions of bounded interaction degree, the conditional mutual information (CMI) decays exponentially with separation, with a prefactor exponential in the boundary size of only one of the two regions and independent of the size of the other region and the total system. This improves the exponential volume dependence of the local Markov bounds established by Chen and Rouzé \cite{Chen2025}. For exponentially and stretched-exponentially decaying interactions, we obtain stretched-exponential CMI decay with a boundary-dependent prefactor. For power-law interactions, we prove inverse-logarithmic or algebraic decay with polynomial region-size dependence. Our proof is static, in contrast to the dynamical approach of Chen and Rouzé. We compare the Gibbs state with a product state obtained by removing boundary interactions, reducing the CMI bound to a relative-entropy loss that we control using locality estimates.

Exact renormalization group flow for matrix product density operators

Kohtaro Kato

Matrix product density operator (MPDO) provides an efficient tensor network representation of mixed states on one-dimensional quantum many-body systems. We study a real-space renormalization group transformation of MPDOs represented by a circuit of local quantum channels. We require that the renormalization group flow is exact, in the sense that it exactly preserves the correlation between the coarse-grained sites and is therefore invertible by another circuit of local quantum channels. Unlike matrix product states (MPS), which always have a well-defined isometric renormalization transformation, we show that general MPDOs do not necessarily admit a converging exact renormalization group flow. We then introduce a subclass of MPDOs with a well-defined renormalization group flow, and show the structure of the MPDOs in the subclass as a representation of a pre-bialgebra structure. As a result, such MPDOs obey generalized symmetry represented by matrix product operator algebras associated with the pre-bialgebra. We also discuss implications with the classification of mixed-state quantum phases.
