Abstract

We present a new geometric approach to Floquet many-body systems described by inhomogeneous conformal field theory in $1+1$ dimensions. It is based on an exact correspondence with dynamical systems on the circle that we establish and use to prove existence of (non)heating phases characterized by the (absence) presence of fixed or higher-periodic points of coordinate transformations encoding the time evolution: Heating corresponds to energy and excitations concentrating exponentially fast at unstable such points while nonheating to pseudoperiodic motion. We show that the heating rate (serving as the order parameter for transitions between these two) can have cusps, even within the overall heating phase, and that there is a rich structure of phase diagrams with different heating phases distinguishable through kinks in the entanglement entropy, reminiscent of Lifshitz phase transitions. Our geometric approach generalizes previous results for a subfamily of similar systems that used only the $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$ algebra to general smooth deformations that require the full infinite-dimensional Virasoro algebra, and we argue that it has wider applicability, even beyond conformal field theory.

Floquet conformal field theories with generally deformed Hamiltonians

Ruihua Fan, Yingfei Gu, Ashvin Vishwanath +1 more

In this work, we study non-equilibrium dynamics in Floquet conformal field theories (CFTs) in 1+1D, in which the driving Hamiltonian involves the energy-momentum density spatially modulated by an arbitrary smooth function. This generalizes earlier work which was restricted to the sine-square deformed type of Floquet Hamiltonians, operating within a \mathfrak{sl}_2 𝔰 𝔩 2 sub-algebra. Here we show remarkably that the problem remains soluble in this generalized case which involves the full Virasoro algebra, based on a geometrical approach. It is found that the phase diagram is determined by the stroboscopic trajectories of operator evolution. The presence/absence of spatial fixed points in the operator evolution indicates that the driven CFT is in a heating/non-heating phase, in which the entanglement entropy grows/oscillates in time. Additionally, the heating regime is further subdivided into a multitude of phases, with different entanglement patterns and spatial distribution of energy-momentum density, which are characterized by the number of spatial fixed points. Phase transitions between these different heating phases can be achieved simply by changing the duration of application of the driving Hamiltonian. %In general, there are rich internal structures in the heating phase characterized by different numbers of spatial fixed points, which result in different entanglement patterns and distribution of energy-momentum density in space. %Interestingly, after each driving cycle, these spatial fixed points will shuffle to each other in the array, and come back to the original locations after p p ( p\ge 1 p ≥ 1 ) driving cycles. We demonstrate the general features with concrete CFT examples and compare the results to lattice calculations and find remarkable agreement.

Floquet conformal field theory

Xueda Wen, Jie-qiang Wu

Given a $generic$ two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT), we propose an analytically solvable setup to study the Floquet dynamics of the CFT, i.e., the dynamics of a CFT subject to a periodic driving. A complete phase diagram in the parameter space can be analytically obtained within our setup. We find two phases: the heating phase and the non-heating phase. In the heating phase, the entanglement entropy keeps growing linearly in time, indicating that the system keeps absorbing energy; in the non-heating phase, the entanglement entropy oscillates periodically in time, i.e., the system is not heated. At the phase transition, the entanglement entropy grows logarithmically in time in a universal way. Furthermore, we can obtain the critical exponent by studying the entanglement evolution near the phase transition. Mathematically, different phases (and phase transition) in a Floquet CFT correspond to different types of M$\ddot{\text{o}}$bius transformations.

Dynamical phases of higher dimensional Floquet CFTs

Diptarka Das, Sumit R. Das, Arnab Kundu +1 more

This paper investigates the dynamical phases of Floquet Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) in space-time dimensions greater than two. Building upon our previous work which introduced quaternionic representations for studying Floquet dynamics in higher-dimensional CFTs, we now explore more general square pulse drive protocols that go beyond a single SU(1,1) S U ( 1 , 1 ) subgroup. We demonstrate that, for multi-step drive protocols, the system exhibits distinct dynamical phases characterized by the nature of the eigenvalues of the quaternionic matrix representing time evolution in a single cycle, leading to different stroboscopic responses. Our analysis establishes a fundamental geometric interpretation where these dynamical phases directly correspond to the presence or absence of Killing horizons in the base space of the CFT and in a higher dimensional AdS space on which a putative dual lives. The heating phase is associated with a non-extremal horizon, the critical phase with an extremal horizon which disappears in the non-heating phase. We develop perturbative approaches to compute the Floquet Hamiltonians in different regimes and show, how tuning drive parameters can lead to horizons, providing a geometric framework for understanding heating phenomena in driven conformal systems.

Real-time correlation function of Floquet conformal fields

M. Skou Andersen, Frederik Nørfjand, Nikolaj Thomas Zinner

Conformal field theories (CFT) play an important role in quantum field theories as they allow for exact studies that are hard to access without the conformal symmetries in place. A remarkable recent development is the application of conformal field theory to periodically driven systems, the so-called Floquet-driven CFTs. A number of recent works have found that there are classes of periodically driven ($1+1$)-dimensional CFTs that can be analytically solved, and that show both heating and nonheating phases, as well as unusual properties in terms of information scrambling. Hitherto, most results have focused on the dynamics of such models at stroboscopic times, i.e., samples taken at each period of the time evolution. In this paper, we consider time evolution at arbitrary real times and derive formulas for the exact time propagation of heating and nonheating classes of Floquet-driven CFTs. This requires a subtle treatment of nonstroboscopic time that leads to different interpretations in terms of curved space-time dynamics in these systems compared to previous results in the literature.

Emergent black hole dynamics in critical Floquet systems

Bastien Lapierre, Kenny Choo, Clément Tauber +3 more

While driven interacting quantum matter is generically subject to heating and scrambling, certain classes of systems evade this paradigm. We study such an exceptional class in periodically driven critical (1+1)-dimensional systems with a spatially modulated but disorder-free time evolution operator. Instead of complete scrambling, the excitations of the system remain well defined. Their propagation is analogous to the evolution along light cones in a curved spacetime obtained by two black holes. The Hawking temperature serves as an order parameter which distinguishes between heating and nonheating phases. Beyond a timescale determined by the inverse Hawking temperature, excitations are absorbed by the black holes resulting in a singular concentration of energy at their horizon. We obtain these results analytically within conformal field theory, capitalizing on a mapping to sine-squared deformed field theories. Furthermore, by means of numerical calculations for an interacting XXZ spin-12 chain, we demonstrate that our findings survive lattice regularization.
