Abstract

We study the low-frequency spectra of complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models at general densities. The analysis applies also to $\mathrm{SU}(M)$ magnets with random exchange at large $M$. The spectral densities are computed by numerical analysis of the saddle-point equations on the real frequency $\ensuremath{\omega}$ axis at zero temperature $T$. The asymptotic low-$\ensuremath{\omega}$ behaviors are found to be in excellent agreement with the scaling dimensions of irrelevant operators which perturb the conformally invariant critical states. Of possible experimental interest is our computation of the universal spin spectral weight of the $\mathrm{SU}(M)$ magnets at low $\ensuremath{\omega}$ and $T$; this includes a contribution from the time reparametrization mode, which is the boundary graviton of the holographic dual. This analysis is extended to a random $t\ensuremath{-}J$ model in the following paper [M. Tikhanovskaya et al., following paper, Phys. Rev. B 103, 075142 (2021)].

The Wishart-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model: Q-Laguerre spectral density and quantum chaos.

Lucas Sá, Antonio M. Garcı́a-Garcı́a

We study the Wishart-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (WSYK) model consisting of two $\hat{q}$-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with general complex couplings, one the complex conjugate of the other, living in off-diagonal blocks of a larger WSYK Hamiltonian. In the limit of large number $N$ of Majoranas and $\hat{q} \propto \sqrt N$, we employ diagrammatic and combinatorial techniques to show that the spectral density of the model can be approximated by the weight function of the Al-Salam-Chihara Q-Laguerre polynomials. For $\hat{q} = 2, 3, 4$, the analytical spectral density, with $Q=Q(\hat{q},N)$ computed analytically, agrees well with numerical results obtained by exact diagonalization. The spectrum is positive with a hard edge at zero energy and, for odd $\hat{q}$, low-energy excitations grow as a stretched exponential, though the functional form is different from that of the supersymmetric SYK model. The microscopic spectral density and level statistics close to the hard edge are very well approximated by that of an ensemble of random matrices belonging to non-standard universality classes, which indicates quantum chaotic dynamics.

Quantum spin glasses and Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

Subir Sachdev A

A brief survey of some random quantum models with infinite-range couplings is presented, ranging from the quantum Ising model to the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model. The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model was the first to realize an extensive zero temperature entropy without requiring an exponentially large ground state degeneracy. This phenomenon is closely linked to the absence of a particle-like interpretation of its low energy spectrum--its spectral functions are not those of bosons or fermions but are instead "Planckian", meaning they are universal functions of energy/temperature. A remarkable consequence of these properties is that the SYK model provides an effective low energy theory of non-supersymmetric charged or rotating black holes in 3+1 dimensions, leading to new results on the density of many-body quantum states of such black holes. For applications to non-quasiparticle metallic states of quantum materials, an extension of the SYK model, known as the two-dimensional Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, is required. The 2dYSYK model describes quantum phase transitions in metals with spatial inhomogeneity in the position of the quantum critical point. This extension has led to a universal theory of the strange metal state observed in numerous correlated electron compounds, including copper-oxide based high temperature superconductors.

Spectral and thermodynamic properties of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Antonio M. Garcı́a-Garcı́a, J. J. M. Verbaarschot

We study spectral and thermodynamic properties of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model, a variant of the $k$-body embedded random ensembles studied for several decades in the context of nuclear physics and quantum chaos. We show analytically that the fourth- and sixth-order energy cumulants vanish in the limit of a large number of particles $N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$, which is consistent with a Gaussian spectral density. However, for finite $N$, the tail of the average spectral density is well approximated by a semicircle law. The specific heat coefficient, determined numerically from the low-temperature behavior of the partition function, is consistent with the value obtained by previous analytical calculations. For energy scales of the order of the mean level spacing we show that level statistics are well described by random matrix theory. Due to the underlying Clifford algebra of the model, the universality class of the spectral correlations depends on $N$. For larger energy separations we identify an energy scale that grows with $N$, reminiscent of the Thouless energy in mesoscopic physics, where deviations from random matrix theory are observed. Our results are a further confirmation that the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model is quantum chaotic for all time scales. According to recent claims in the literature, this is an expected feature in field theories with a gravity dual.

Q -Laguerre spectral density and quantum chaos in the Wishart-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Lucas Sá, Antonio M. Garcı́a-Garcı́a

We study the Wishart-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (WSYK) model consisting of two $\stackrel{^}{q}$-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) models with general complex couplings, one the Hermitian conjugate of the other, living in off-diagonal blocks of a larger WSYK Hamiltonian. The spectrum is positive with a hard edge at zero energy. We employ diagrammatic and combinatorial techniques to compute analytically the low-order moments of the Hamiltonian. In the limit of large number $N$ of Majoranas, we have found striking similarities with the moments of the weight function of the Al-Salam-Chihara $Q$-Laguerre polynomials. For $\stackrel{^}{q}=3$, 4, the $Q$-Laguerre prediction, with $Q=Q(\stackrel{^}{q},N)$ also computed analytically, agrees well with exact diagonalization results for $30<N\ensuremath{\le}34$ while we observe some deviations for $\stackrel{^}{q}=2$. The most salient feature of the spectral density is that, for odd $\stackrel{^}{q}$, low-energy excitations grow as a stretched exponential, with a functional form different from that of the supersymmetric SYK model. For $\stackrel{^}{q}=4$, a detailed analysis of level statistics reveals quantum chaotic dynamics even for time scales substantially shorter than the Heisenberg time. More specifically, the spacing ratios in the bulk of the spectrum and the microscopic spectral density and the number variance close to the hard edge are very well approximated by that of an ensemble of random matrices that, depending on $N$, belong to the chiral or superconducting universality classes. In particular, we report the first realization of level statistics belonging to the chiral Gaussian Unitary Ensemble universality class, which completes the tenfold-way classification in the SYK model.

Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Models and Beyond: A Window into Non-Fermi Liquids

Debanjan Chowdhury, Antoine Georges, Olivier Parcollet +1 more

We present a review of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model of compressible quantum many-body systems without quasiparticle excitations, and its connections to various theoretical studies of non-Fermi liquids in condensed matter physics. The review is placed in the context of numerous experimental observations on correlated electron materials. Strong correlations in metals are often associated with their proximity to a Mott transition to an insulator created by the local Coulomb repulsion between the electrons. We explore the phase diagrams of a number of models of such local electronic correlation, employing a dynamical mean field theory in the presence of random spin exchange interactions. Numerical analyses and analytical solutions, using renormalization group methods and expansions in large spin degeneracy, lead to critical regions which display SYK physics. The models studied include the single-band Hubbard model, the $t$-$J$ model and the two-band Kondo-Heisenberg model in the presence of random spin exchange interactions. We also examine non-Fermi liquids obtained by considering each SYK model with random four-fermion interactions to be a multi-orbital atom, with the SYK-atoms arranged in an infinite lattice. We connect to theories of sharp Fermi surfaces without any low-energy quasiparticles in the absence of spatial disorder, obtained by coupling a Fermi liquid to a gapless boson; a systematic large $N$ theory of such a critical Fermi surface, with SYK characteristics, is obtained by averaging over an ensemble of theories with random boson-fermion couplings. Finally, we present an overview of the links between the SYK model and quantum gravity and end with an outlook on open questions.

Quantum statistical mechanics of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and charged black holes

Subir Sachdev A

This review is a contribution to a book dedicated to the memory of Michael E. Fisher. The first example of a quantum many body system not expected to have any quasiparticle excitations was the Wilson-Fisher conformal field theory. The absence of quasiparticles can be established in the compressible, metallic state of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model of fermions with random interactions. The solvability of the latter model has enabled numerous computations of the non-quasiparticle dynamics of chaotic many-body states, such as those expected to describe quantum black holes. We review thermodynamic properties of the SYK model, and describe how they have led to an understanding of the universal structure of the low energy density of states of charged black holes without low energy supersymmetry.
