Abstract

Spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains with alternating antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) couplings exhibit quantum entanglement as the integer-spin Haldane chains and might be similarly utilized for quantum computations. Such alternating AF-FM chains have been proposed to be realized in the distorted honeycomb lattice compound ${\mathrm{Na}}_{2}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{\mathrm{TeO}}_{6}$, but to confirm this picture a comprehensive understanding of the exchange interactions including terms outside of the idealized model is required. Here, we employ neutron scattering to study the spin dynamics in ${\mathrm{Na}}_{2}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{\mathrm{TeO}}_{6}$ and accurately determine the coupling strengths through the random phase approximation and density functional theory approaches. We find the AF and FM intrachain couplings are the dominant terms in the spin Hamiltonian, while the interchain couplings are AF but perturbative. This hierarchy in the coupling strengths and the alternating signs of the intrachain couplings can be understood through their different exchange paths. Our results establish ${\mathrm{Na}}_{2}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{\mathrm{TeO}}_{6}$ as a weakly coupled alternating AF-FM chain compound and reveal the robustness of the gapped ground state in alternating chains under weak interchain couplings.

Electronic structure, magnetic properties, and pairing tendencies of the copper-based honeycomb lattice Na2Cu2TeO6

Spin-1/2 chains with alternating antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) couplings have attracted considerable interest due to the topological character of their spin excitations. Here, using density functional theory and density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) methods, we have systematically studied the dimerized chain system ${\mathrm{Na}}_{2}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{\mathrm{TeO}}_{6}$ with a ${d}^{9}$ electronic configuration. Near the Fermi level, in the nonmagnetic phase the dominant states are mainly contributed by the Cu $3{d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$ orbitals highly hybridized with the O $2p$ orbitals, leading to an ``effective'' single-orbital low-energy model. By calculating the relevant hoping amplitudes, we explain the size and sign of the exchange interactions in ${\mathrm{Na}}_{2}{\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{\mathrm{TeO}}_{6}$. In addition, a single-orbital Hubbard model is constructed for this dimerized chain system where the quantum fluctuations are taken into account. Both AFM and FM couplings (leading to an $\ensuremath{\uparrow}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\downarrow}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\downarrow}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\ensuremath{\uparrow}$ state) along the chain were found in our DMRG and Lanczos calculations, in agreement with density functional theory and neutron-scattering results. The hole pairing binding energy $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}E$ is predicted to be negative at Hubbard $U\ensuremath{\sim}11\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{eV}$, suggesting incipient pairing tendencies.

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg model with three exchange interactions, ${J}_{\mathrm{A}}, {J}_{\mathrm{B}}$, and ${J}_{\mathrm{C}}$, that is realized in a distorted honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnet ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{(\mathrm{pymca})}_{3}({\mathrm{ClO}}_{4})$. We remeasured the magnetic susceptibility of its polycrystalline sample with special care and determined the exchange parameters of this material through the comparison with numerical results based on a quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method. The QMC method also provides a ground-state phase diagram in the ${J}_{\mathrm{A}}/{J}_{\mathrm{C}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{\mathrm{B}}/{J}_{\mathrm{C}}$ plane. The phase diagram consists of a small $\mathrm{N}\stackrel{\ifmmode \acute{}\else \'{}\fi{}}{\mathrm{e}}\mathrm{el}$ phase and a gapped quantum paramagnetic phase surrounding the $\mathrm{N}\stackrel{\ifmmode \acute{}\else \'{}\fi{}}{\mathrm{e}}\mathrm{el}$ phase. The latter includes six regimes of hexagonal-singlet-type states and dimer-singlet-type states alternatingly without boundaries closing the spin gap. We further calculate the equal-time spin structure factor in each phase using the QMC method. The computed spin dynamics by the exact diagonalization method exhibits continua near and in the AF phase. Characteristic four energy band structures in the state with strong hexagonal-singlet-type correlations are informative to clarify the ground state of ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{(\mathrm{pymca})}_{3}({\mathrm{ClO}}_{4})$ by future neutron scattering measurements.

Numerical evidence of a spin- 1∕2 chain approaching a spin-1 chain

Hsiang-Hsuan Hung, Chang-De Gong

We study the one-dimensional Heisenberg spin-$1∕2$ alternating bond chain in which the nearest neighbor exchange couplings are ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AF) alternatively. By using exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method, we discuss how the system approaches the AF uniform spin-1 chain under certain conditions. When the ratio of AF to FM coupling strengths, $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ $(\ensuremath{\alpha}={J}_{AF}∕{J}_{F})$, is very small, physical properties of the alternating bond chain such as spin-spin correlation, the string correlation function, and the spin density coincide with those of the AF uniform spin-1 chain. The edge state problem is discussed in the present model with the small $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ limit. In addition, the Haldane gap of the AF uniform spin-1 chain is four times the gap of the system considered.

Criticality of the uniform magnetic order in a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic random alternating quantum spin chain

Tota Nakamura

An $S=1∕2$ ferromagnetic (F) and antiferromagnetic (AF) random alternating Heisenberg quantum spin chain model is investigated in connection to its realization compound ${(\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{H}}_{3})}_{2}\mathrm{C}\mathrm{H}\mathrm{N}{\mathrm{H}}_{3}\mathrm{Cu}{({\mathrm{Cl}}_{x}{\mathrm{Br}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x})}_{3}$. The exchange interaction bonds consist of alternating strong F-AF random bonds and weak uniform AF bonds. Using the quantum Monte Carlo method we have found that the excitation energy gap closes and the uniform AF order becomes critical in the intermediate-concentration region. This finding explains the experimental observation of the magnetic transition by considering weak interchain interactions. The present results suggest that uniform AF order survives even in the presence of randomly located ferromagnetic bonds. This may be an exotic quantum effect.

Possible AF Order in F-AF Random Alternating Heisenberg Chain

Tota Nakamura

The S=1/2 ferromagnetic (F) - antiferromagnetic (AF) random alternating Heisenberg quantum spin chain is investigated by the quantum Monte Carlo method. The randomness is only present on the strong bonds taking values of ±2J randomly, and the weak bonds are uniformly antiferromagnetic with J. The model corresponds to the quasi one-dimensional compound, (CH3)2CHNH3Cu(Clx, Br1-x)3, whose ground state interpolates the Haldane state of the F-AF alternating spin chain at x=1 and the singlet-dimer state of the AF-AF alternating spin chain at x=0. The nonequilibrium relaxation function of the staggered magnetic susceptibility exhibits algebraic divergence in the intermediate region of 0.44 ≪ x ≪ 0.87, which explains the experimental observation of the magnetic phase transition. The results suggest that the antiferromagnetic order becomes critical by the randomness of the bond distributions even in the presence of the rich ferromagnetic bonds.
