Hamiltonians Generated by Parseval Frames

Abstract

Abstract It is known that self-adjoint Hamiltonians with purely discrete eigenvalues can be written as (infinite) linear combination of mutually orthogonal projectors with eigenvalues as coefficients of the expansion. The projectors are defined by the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonians. In some recent papers, this expansion has been extended to the case in which these eigenvectors form a Riesz basis or, more recently, a ${\mathcal{D}}$ D -quasi basis (Bagarello and Bellomonte in J. Phys. A 50:145203, 2017, Bagarello et al. in J. Math. Phys. 59:033506, 2018), rather than an orthonormal basis. Here we discuss what can be done when these sets are replaced by Parseval frames. This interest is motivated by physical reasons, and in particular by the fact that the mathematical Hilbert space where the physical system is originally defined, contains sometimes also states which cannot really be occupied by the physical system itself. In particular, we show what changes in the spectrum of the observables, when going from orthonormal bases to Parseval frames. In this perspective we propose the notion of $E$ E -connection for observables. Several examples are discussed.

From self-adjoint to non-self-adjoint harmonic oscillators: Physical consequences and mathematical pitfalls

Fabio Bagarello

Using as a prototype example the harmonic oscillator we show how losing self-adjointness of the Hamiltonian $H$ changes drastically the related functional structure. In particular, we show that even a small deviation from strict self-adjointness of $H$ produces two deep consequences, not well understood in the literature: First of all, the original orthonormal basis of $H$ splits into two families of biorthogonal vectors. These two families are complete but, contrarily to what often claimed for similar systems, none of them is a basis for the Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. Second, the so-called metric operator is unbounded, as well as its inverse. In the second part of the paper, after an extension of some previous results on the so-called $\mathcal{D}$ pseudobosons, we discuss some aspects of our extended harmonic oscillator from this different point of view.

Intertwining operators for non-self-adjoint Hamiltonians and bicoherent states

F. Bagarello

This paper is devoted to the construction of what we will call exactly solvable models, i.e., of quantum mechanical systems described by an Hamiltonian H whose eigenvalues and eigenvectors can be explicitly constructed out of some minimal ingredients. In particular, motivated by PT-quantum mechanics, we will not insist on any self-adjointness feature of the Hamiltonians considered in our construction. We also introduce the so-called bicoherent states, we analyze some of their properties and we show how they can be used for quantizing a system. Some examples, both in finite and in infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, are discussed.

CPT-Frames for Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

Cao Huai

Based on the P T-symmetric quantum theory, the concepts of P T-frame,P T-symmetric operator and CPT-frame on a Hilbert space K and for an operator on K are proposed. It is proved that the spectrum and point spectrum of a P T-symmetric linear operator are both symmetric with respect to the real axis and the eigenvalues of an unbroken P T-symmetric operator are real. For a linear operator H on Cd,it is proved that H has unbroken P T symmetry if and only if it has d diferent eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenstates are eigenstates of P T.Given a C P T-frame on K,a new positive inner product on K is induced and called C P T-inner product.Te relationship between the CP T-adjoint and the Dirac adjoint of a densely defined linear operator is derived, and it is proved that an operator which has a bounded CP T-frame is CP T-Hermitian if and only if it is T-symmetric,in that case,it is similar to a Hermitian operator. The existence of an operator C consisting of a CP T-frame is discussed. These concepts and results will serve a mathematical discussion about P T-symmetric quantum mechanics.

Non-self-adjoint operators with real spectra and extensions of quantum mechanics

Natália Bebiano, João da Providência

In this article, we review the quantum mechanical setting associated with a non-self-adjoint Hamiltonian with a real spectrum. The spectral properties of the Hamiltonian of a Swanson-like model are investigated. The eigenfunctions associated with the real simple eigenvalues are shown to form complete systems but not a (Riesz) basis, which gives rise to difficulties in the rigorous mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics. A new inner product, appropriate for the physical interpretation of the model, has been consistently introduced. The dynamics of the system is described. Some specificities of the theory of non-self-adjoint operators with implications in quantum mechanics are discussed.

CPT-Frames for Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians

Cao Huai-xin, Zhihua Guo, Zhengli Chen

Based on the PT-symmetric quantum theory, the concepts of PT-frame, PT-symmetric operator and CPT-frame on a Hilbert space K and for an operator on K are proposed. It is proved that the spectrum and point spectrum of a PT-symmetric linear operator are both symmetric with respect to the real axis and the eigenvalues of an unbroken PT-symmetric operator are real. For a linear operator H on C d , it is proved that H has unbroken PT-symmetry if and only if it has d different eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenstates are eigenstates of PT. Given a CPT-frame on K, a new positive inner product on K is induced and called CPT-inner product. Te relationship between the CPT-adjoint and the Dirac adjoint of a densely defined linear operator is derived, and it is proved that an operator which has a bounded CPT-frame is CPT-Hermitian if and only if it is T-symmetric, in that case, it is similar to a Hermitian operator. The existence of an operator C consisting of a CPT-frame is discussed. These concepts and results will serve a mathematical discussion about PT-symmetric quantum mechanics.

Non-self-adjoint Hamiltonians with complex eigenvalues

F Bagarello

Abstract Motivated by what one observes dealing with PT-symmetric quantum mechanics, we discuss what happens if a physical system is driven by a diagonalizable Hamiltonian with not all real eigenvalues. In particular, we consider the functional structure related to systems living in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces, and we show that certain intertwining relations can be deduced also in this case if we introduce suitable antilinear operators. We also analyze a simple model, computing the transition probabilities in the broken and in the unbroken regime.
