Two point functions in defect CFTs

Abstract

Abstract This paper is designed to be a practical tool for constructing and investigating two-point correlation functions in defect conformal field theory, directly in physical space, between any two bulk primaries or between a bulk primary and a defect primary, with arbitrary spin. Although geometrically elegant and ultimately a more powerful approach, the embedding space formalism gets rather cumbersome when dealing with mixed symmetry tensors, especially in the projection to physical space. The results in this paper provide an alternative method for studying two-point correlation functions for a generic d-dimensional conformal field theory with a flat p-dimensional defect and d − p = q co-dimensions. We tabulate some examples of correlation functions involving a conserved current, an energy momentum tensor and a Maxwell field strength, while analysing the constraints arising from conservation and the equations of motion. A method for obtaining bulk-to-defect correlators is also explained. Some explicit examples are considered: free scalar theory on ℝp× (ℝq/ℤ2) and a free four dimensional Maxwell theory on a wedge.

Exploring defects with degrees of freedom in free scalar CFTs

Vladimir Bashmakov, Jacopo Sisti

A bstract Defects in conformal field theories are interesting objects to study from both formal and applied points of view. In this paper, we construct conformal defects in free scalar field CFTs in diverse dimensions. After discussing the possible quadratic defects, we explore interacting setups. These are realized by coupling the bulk free scalar to lower-dimensional theories, including the unitary family of minimal models $$ \mathcal{M}\left(m,m+1\right) $$ M m m + 1 . Another example involves coupling to a two-dimensional free scalar field, from which we construct surface defects for the bulk dimensions three and five. Additionally, we consider monodromy defects associated with a global U(1) flavour symmetry. In these theories, we study both self-defect interactions and couplings to Minimal Models, finding new IR defect fixed points. For all our examples, we provide results for correlation functions, such as those involving the bulk stress tensor and the displacement operator, and for the defect central charges.

Monodromy defects in free field theories

Lorenzo Bianchi, Adam Chalabi, Vladimír Procházka +2 more

Abstract We study co-dimension two monodromy defects in theories of conformally coupled scalars and free Dirac fermions in arbitrary d dimensions. We characterise this family of conformal defects by computing the one-point functions of the stress-tensor and conserved current for Abelian flavour symmetries as well as two-point functions of the displacement operator. In the case of d = 4, the normalisation of these correlation functions are related to defect Weyl anomaly coefficients, and thus provide crucial information about the defect conformal field theory. We provide explicit checks on the values of the defect central charges by calculating the universal part of the defect contribution to entanglement entropy, and further, we use our results to extract the universal part of the vacuum Rényi entropy. Moreover, we leverage the non-supersymmetric free field results to compute a novel defect Weyl anomaly coefficient in a d = 4 theory of free $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 2 hypermultiplets. Including singular modes in the defect operator product expansion of fundamental fields, we identify notable relevant deformations in the singular defect theories and show that they trigger a renormalisation group flow towards an IR fixed point with the most regular defect OPE. We also study Gukov-Witten defects in free d = 4 Maxwell theory and show that their central charges vanish.

Defect conformal field theories with free-in-the-bulk fermions

Christopher P. Herzog, Daniel Lloyd-Jones

We study codimension-two conformal defects for massless fermions that are free in a four-dimensional bulk, but interact on a two-dimensional defect. The bulk Dirac equation strongly constrains defect conformal field theory data: it fixes the dimensions of operators in the bulk-defect operator product expansion and, for bulk-defect-defect three-point functions, enforces a double-twist relation when only one member of a shadow pair is allowed by unitarity. The lowest modes of monodromy defects provide an important exception, since both shadow partners can be unitary and their three-point functions are instead related by a shadow transform. We illustrate these structures with defect interactions, including an exactly tractable bilinear flow and Gross-Neveu-type quartic couplings. At a perturbative mixed fixed point, we find an explicit interacting example in which the double-twist condition is violated and the two shadow channels combine to give a regular bulk-defect-defect correlation function.

Weyl anomalies of four dimensional conformal boundaries and defects

Adam Chalabi, Christopher P. Herzog, Andy O’Bannon +2 more

Abstract Motivated by questions about quantum information and classification of quantum field theories, we consider Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) in spacetime dimension d ≥ 5 with a conformally-invariant spatial boundary (BCFTs) or 4-dimensional conformal defect (DCFTs). We determine the boundary or defect contribution to the Weyl anomaly using the standard algorithm, which includes imposing Wess-Zumino consistency and fixing finite counterterms. These boundary/defect contributions are built from the intrinsic and extrinsic curvatures, as well as the pullback of the ambient CFT’s Weyl tensor. For a co-dimension one boundary or defect (i.e. d = 5), we reproduce the 9 parity-even terms found by Astaneh and Solodukhin, and we discover 3 parity-odd terms. For larger co-dimension, we find 23 parity-even terms and 6 parity-odd terms. The coefficient of each term defines a “central charge” that characterizes the BCFT or DCFT. We show how several of the parity-even central charges enter physical observables, namely the displacement operator two-point function, the stress-tensor one-point function, and the universal part of the entanglement entropy. We compute several parity-even central charges in tractable examples: monodromy and conical defects of free, massless scalars and Dirac fermions in d = 6; probe branes in Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space dual to defects in CFTs with d ≥ 6; and Takayanagi’s AdS/BCFT with d = 5. We demonstrate that several of our examples obey the boundary/defect a-theorem, as expected.

Boundaries and defects in conformal field theories at finite temperature

Daniele Artico, Adam Chalabi

We consider conformal boundaries and defects in Euclidean conformal field theory (CFT) at finite temperature and infinite volume. We distinguish defects that wrap the thermal circle and defects that are localised at a point on it. In both set-ups, and for any dimension and co-dimension, we classify bulk one-point functions of scalar, vector and spin-2 primaries. We relate the low-temperature expansion of bulk scalar one-point functions to zero-temperature defect CFT data and new finite-temperature data of defect primaries. For localised defects, we derive one-point bootstrap sum rules using periodicity and the defect operator expansion. We consider several examples in free bulk CFTs: unitary and non-unitary boundary CFTs, a wrapping monodromy defect, and a localised magnetic line. We determine thermal defect CFT data in all examples. For defects wrapping the thermal circle, we compute thermodynamic observables. For localised defects, we observe a Hurwitz zeta function decomposition of one-point functions suggestive of an underlying dispersion relation.

Conformal defects of general dimensions at finite temperature

Yucheng Li, Haruki Nakayama, 辰磨 西岡

We consider defect conformal field theories (DCFTs) at finite temperature, where a $p$-dimensional conformal defect wraps the thermal circle. Extending the previous study of line defects to defects of general dimensions, we determine the general forms of the thermal one-point functions of bulk scalars, conserved currents and the stress tensor by imposing the residual symmetry and the conservation laws. The low temperature expansion of the thermal one-point functions is shown to be reproduced by the bulk-defect operator expansion, allowing us to read off the thermal one-point coefficients of defect operators. We examine the general results in four classes of examples with free bulk theories: the trivial defect, free scalar and fermion theories with a boundary, the free scalar theory with a localized $ϕ$ deformation in $d=2\,p+2$ dimensions and the free $\mathrm{O}(N)$ model with a localized $ϕ^2$ deformation in $d=p+2-ε$ dimensions. In the last example with $ε= 1$, where the defect becomes an interface, we find that the thermal one-point functions coincide with those of the free scalar theory with the Dirichlet boundary condition, in accordance with the conjectured factorization of an interface CFT into two decoupled boundary CFTs.
