Abstract

Given a uniform, frustration-free family of local Lindbladians defined on a quantum lattice spin system in any spatial dimension, we prove a strong exponential convergence in relative entropy of the system to equilibrium under a condition of spatial mixing of the stationary Gibbs states and the rapid decay of the relative entropy on finite-size blocks. Our result leads to the first examples of the positivity of the modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality for quantum lattice spin systems independently of the system size. Moreover, we show that our notion of spatial mixing is a consequence of the recent quantum generalization of Dobrushin and Shlosman's complete analyticity of the free-energy at equilibrium. The latter typically holds above a critical temperature Tc. Our results have wide-ranging applications in quantum information. As an illustration, we discuss four of them: first, using techniques of quantum optimal transport, we show that a quantum annealer subject to a finite range classical noise will output an energy close to that of the fixed point after constant annealing time. Second, we prove Gaussian concentration inequalities for Lipschitz observables and show that the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis holds for certain high-temperture Gibbs states. Third, we prove a finite blocklength refinement of the quantum Stein lemma for the task of asymmetric discrimination of two Gibbs states of commuting Hamiltonians satisfying our conditions. Fourth, in the same setting, our results imply the existence of a local quantum circuit of logarithmic depth to prepare Gibbs states of a class of commuting Hamiltonians.

Modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality for 1D non-commuting Hamiltonians

Ángela Capel, David Pérez-García, Matteo Scandi

Given a finite-range, non-commuting Hamiltonian on a 1D chain of finite spins, we prove a modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality with constant $Ω(1/\log n)$ for the heat-bath dynamics, a quasi-local Gibbs sampler, and for the regularised heat-bath dynamics. This implies rapid mixing of both samplers towards the Gibbs state in relative entropy and trace norm, with mixing times of order $\mathcal{O}(\log n\cdot \log(n/ε))$. The interactions may be spatially inhomogeneous. The proof combines weak quasi-factorisation of relative entropy, decay-of-correlation estimates, a uniform conditional local gap, and a buffered comparison between conditional entropy and quadratic energy. The resulting bounded entropy defect is removed using the global gap. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first proof of MLSI in the non-commuting regime.

Complete Modified Logarithmic Sobolev Inequalities for one-dimensional quantum Spin Chain

Li Gao, Jingyu Guo, Sihao Wang

We prove a complete modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality with a system-size-independent constant for Chen--Kastoryano--Gilyén Gibbs samplers on one-dimensional spin chain at every fixed positive temperature. The result holds for Hamiltonians with bounded finite-range interactions, including noncommuting and spatially nonuniform interactions. It yields trace and diamond mixing times of order $O(\log N+\log(1/ε))$. The proof establishes complete spatial entropy factorization and absorbs quasi-local errors as conditional relative entropy at the original joint state and reference. The static estimate also yields a system-size-independent CMLSI for the single-site Petz heat-bath and regularised heat-bath dynamics.

Size-independent Logarithmic Sobolev Inequalities for Quantum Gibbs Samplers

Hongrui Chen, Zhiyan Ding, Jianfeng Lu

We propose a new method for proving $L^2$ and modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities with constants independent of system size for quantum Gibbs samplers whose Lindblad generators satisfy Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (KMS) detailed balance. We first establish the $L^2$ logarithmic Sobolev inequality by transporting it along a temperature-dependent path from the infinite-temperature product state to the target Gibbs state while maintaining a size-independent decay rate for the sandwiched Rényi-2 divergence. A tensor-power argument, combined with the quantum asymptotic equipartition property, then transfers this decay bound to relative entropy, yielding the modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality. This approach provides a general framework for proving size-independent logarithmic Sobolev inequalities for quantum Gibbs samplers. We apply it to two regimes: one-dimensional quantum spin chains at every finite temperature, and finite-range quantum spin systems at sufficiently high temperature in any fixed dimension.

Quantum Concentration Inequalities

Giacomo De Palma, Cambyse Rouzé

Abstract We establish Transportation Cost Inequalities (TCIs) with respect to the quantum Wasserstein distance by introducing quantum extensions of well-known classical methods: First, we generalize the Dobrushin uniqueness condition to prove that Gibbs states of 1D commuting Hamiltonians satisfy a TCI at any positive temperature and provide conditions under which this first result can be extended to non-commuting Hamiltonians. Next, using a non-commutative version of Ollivier’s coarse Ricci curvature, we prove that high temperature Gibbs states of commuting Hamiltonians on arbitrary hypergraphs $$H=(V,E)$$ H = ( V , E ) satisfy a TCI with constant scaling as O(|V|). Third, we argue that the temperature range for which the TCI holds can be enlarged by relating it to recently established modified logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. Fourth, we prove that the inequality still holds for fixed points of arbitrary reversible local quantum Markov semigroups on regular lattices, albeit with slightly worsened constants, under a seemingly weaker condition of local indistinguishability of the fixed points. Finally, we use our framework to prove Gaussian concentration bounds for the distribution of eigenvalues of quasi-local observables and argue the usefulness of the TCI in proving the equivalence of the canonical and microcanonical ensembles and an exponential improvement over the weak Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis.

Rapid mixing of Gibbs samplers via quantum Dobrushin--Shlosman conditions

Cambyse Rouzé, Daniel Stilck França

Classical Dobrushin--Shlosman theory uses heat-bath block updates to identify sharp temperature thresholds for establishing the rapid mixing of Gibbs samplers. In particular, these mixing guarantees often hold even when stricter single-site conditions fail. We extend this approach to noncommuting quantum lattice systems through a quantum Dobrushin--Shlosman condition for finite-block dynamics, which we call smoothed heat-bath dynamics. We establish this condition in two regimes. For finite-range quantum spin chains at every fixed finite temperature, we prove logarithmic trace-norm mixing in system size, with normalized bounds uniform in on-site fields and single exponential in inverse temperature. We also prove stability under small local perturbations of interacting, possibly noncommuting reference Hamiltonians on graphs of polynomial volume growth. For classical references with bounded local interactions, uniform strong spatial mixing implies our quantum condition. With bounded local terms and fixed physical, geometric and block parameters, the resulting samplers prepare Gibbs states to trace-norm error $\varepsilon$ using $N\operatorname{polylog}(N/\varepsilon)$ gates and classical operations. Our block updates combine a local Gibbs reset with quantum belief propagation to incorporate interactions across the block boundary, yielding exactly Gibbs-preserving, KMS-reversible channels. Two independently tunable parameters control contraction: an internal evolution time suppresses the influence of sites inside a block, while the block size allows interior contraction to dominate boundary influence. This finite-time relaxation has no counterpart in a classical heat-bath block update.

On the modified logarithmic Sobolev inequality for the heat-bath dynamics for 1D systems

Ivan Bardet, Ángela Capel, Angelo Lucia +2 more

The mixing time of Markovian dissipative evolutions of open quantum many-body systems can be bounded using optimal constants of certain quantum functional inequalities, such as the modified logarithmic Sobolev constant. For classical spin systems, the positivity of such constants follows from a mixing condition for the Gibbs measure via quasi-factorization results for the entropy. Inspired by the classical case, we present a strategy to derive the positivity of the modified logarithmic Sobolev constant associated with the dynamics of certain quantum systems from some clustering conditions on the Gibbs state of a local, commuting Hamiltonian. In particular, we show that for the heat-bath dynamics of 1D systems, the modified logarithmic Sobolev constant is positive under the assumptions of a mixing condition on the Gibbs state and a strong quasi-factorization of the relative entropy.
