Abstract

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) provides us a powerful approach to resist all attacks at detection side. Besides the unconditional security, people also seek for high key generation rate, but MDI-QKD has relatively low key generation rate. In this paper, we provide an efficient approach to increase the key generation rate of MDI-QKD by adopting multiple degrees of freedom (DOFs) of single photons to generate keys. Compared with other high-dimension MDI-QKD protocols encoding in one DOF, our protocol is more flexible, for our protocol generating keys in independent subsystems and the detection failure or error in a DOF not affecting the information encoding in other DOFs. Based on above features, our MDI-QKD protocol may have potential application in future quantum communication field.

Feasible high-dimensional measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution

Abstract Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) can resist all possible attacks from practical measurement devices. High-dimensional (HD) MDI-QKD in multiple degrees of freedom (DOFs) can efficiently increase the key generation rate and has strong noise and error resistance. However, previous HD MDI-QKD protocols in multiple DOFs required complete hyperentangled Bell state analysis (HBSA), which cannot be realized under current experimental conditions and largely limits the practicality of the HD MDI-QKD. In this paper, we propose an HD MDI-QKD protocol in multiple DOFs which adopts a linear-optical HBSA. This adoption of the linear-optical HBSA makes our HD MDI-QKD feasible under current experimental technology. The key generation rate of our MDI-QKD protocol is about eight times of the original MDI-QKD protocol. Our HD MDI-QKD protocol may have potential applications in current and future quantum communication fields.

Measurement-device–independent quantum secure direct communication of multiple degrees of freedom of a single photon

Zi-Kang Zou, Lan Zhou, Wei Zhong +1 more

Quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) can realize the direct and secure transmission of information instead of sharing secure keys between two parties. Similar to quantum key distribution (QKD), in practical applications, QSDC may suffer from attacks from imperfect detector. Measurement-device–independent QSDC (MDI-QSDC) can remove all attacks at detector's side and close all loopholes in the detection system. However, existing MDI-QSDC protocols have relatively low capacity. In this paper, we propose a high-capacity MDI-QSDC protocol of multiple degrees of freedom of a single photon. Compared with original MDI-QSDC protocols, our protocol has larger channel capacity which can use a single photon to transmit multi-bit of secure information. This protocol may have potential application in future quantum secure communication.

High-dimensional measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution on two-dimensional subspaces

Luca Dellantonio, Anders Søndberg Sørensen, Davide Bacco

Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides ultimate cryptographic security based on the laws of quantum mechanics. For point-to-point QKD protocols, the security of the generated key is compromised by detector side channel attacks. This problem can be solved with measurement-device-independent QKD (mdi-QKD). However, mdi-QKD has shown limited performances in terms of the secret key generation rate, due to postselection in the Bell measurements. We show that high-dimensional (Hi-D) encoding (qudits) improves the performance of current mdi-QKD implementations. The scheme is proven to be unconditionally secure even for weak coherent pulses with decoy states, while the secret key rate is derived in the single-photon case. Our analysis includes phase errors, imperfect sources, and dark counts to mimic real systems. Compared to the standard bidimensional case, we show an improvement in the key generation rate.

Efficient passive measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution

Chunhui Zhang, Chun-Mei Zhang, Qin Wang

To date, only active-decoy-state methods have been adopted in current measurement-device-independent (MDI) quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols, causing security loopholes when modulating multiple light intensities with practical devices. To solve this problem, the passive-decoy-state method will be a good choice. Until today practical passive-decoy-state MDI QKD is still missing. In this paper, based on a recently discussed structure of heralded single-photon sources, we propose a passive-decoy-state MDI QKD protocol. In present work, one does not need to modulate light sources into different intensities, but utilizes the built-in local detection events to passively generate different decoy states. Furthermore, through carrying out an appropriate mathematical method, we are able to give very precise estimations for single-photon-pair contributions. As a result, our protocol can exhibit distinct advantages compared with state-of-the-art MDI QKD schemes even when the finite-key-size effect is taken into account. Therefore, our protocol seems a promising candidate to enhance both the security and performance of MDI QKD in practical implementation.

Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution with entanglement-assisted linear Bell state measurement

Cheng 诚 Zhang 张, Cheng Liu, Jiawei Ying +7 more

Abstract Measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI QKD) provides inherent immunity against attacks targeting practical measurement devices. Existing MDI QKD protocols all rely on Bell-state measurements (BSM) to establish correlations between the users. However, the success probability of linear-optics BSM is limited to 50%, which severely restricts the achievable key rate of MDI QKD. We propose a high-capacity MDI QKD protocol with entanglement-assisted linear-optical BSM. This protocol has three advantages. First, compared with the original MDI QKD, at least a 25% increase in the key rate can be achieved. Second, simulation results show that this protocol can effectively increase the maximum photon transmission distance of MDI QKD from 262 km to 272 km. Third, this protocol is feasible in a fully linear-optical system under current experimental conditions. Our protocol provides a potential approach for improving the performance of future quantum communication networks.

High-secure quantum communication and networks

Guan‐Jie Fan‐Yuan

Quantum key distribution (QKD) can serve large numbers of users with unconditional secure communication, in which measurement-device-independent (MDI) QKD protocol can conveniently enhance realistic security by eliminating all detector side channels. In multi-user scenarios, MDI-QKD networks should meet the requirements of reliability and robustness. Around the issues, we complete a series of work on performance improvement, low-cost deployment, and robust networking. First is to answer how to change the trusted node to the untrusted node with low cost, here we propose and demonstrate an MDIQKD which is compatible with phase encoding BB84 networks, allowing for economical deployment of MDI-QKD networks and reconciliation between high key rate and high realistic security in the same network. Then we make the MDI networks more robust. We design an MDI-QKD networking scheme for multi-user access where more than two users can generate keys synchronously regardless of aligning reference frames and compensating channel disturbance on polarization. Third, we find a general method to distil secure keys from quantum discord, which is different to the previous entanglement-based frameworks of MDI-QKD, allowing imperfect preparation and measurement of quantum states. The series of work can help the practical application of MDI-QKD networks, and promote the development of quantum networks.
