Dark-antidark spinor solitons in spin-1 Bose gases

Abstract

We consider a one-dimensional trapped spin-1 Bose gas and numerically explore families of its solitonic solutions, namely antidark-dark-antidark (ADDAD), as well as dark-antidark-dark (DADD) solitary waves. Their existence and stability properties are systematically investigated within the experimentally accessible easy-plane ferromagnetic phase by means of a continuation over the atom number as well as the quadratic Zeeman energy. It is found that ADDADs are substantially more dynamically robust than DADDs. The latter are typically unstable within the examined parameter range. The dynamical evolution of both of these states is explored and the implication of their potential unstable evolution is studied. Some of the relevant observed possibilities involve, e.g., symmetry-breaking instability manifestations for the ADDAD, as well as splitting of the DADD into a right- and a left-moving dark-antidark pair with the antidarks residing in a different component as compared with prior to the splitting. In the latter case, the structures are seen to disperse upon long-time propagation.

Phase diagram, stability and magnetic properties of nonlinear excitations in spinor Bose–Einstein condensates

Abstract We present the phase diagram, the underlying stability and magnetic properties as well as the dynamics of nonlinear solitary wave excitations arising in the distinct phases of a harmonically confined spinor F = 1 Bose–Einstein condensate. Particularly, it is found that nonlinear excitations in the form of dark–dark–bright solitons exist in the antiferromagnetic and in the easy-axis phase of a spinor gas, being generally unstable in the former while possessing stability intervals in the latter phase. Dark–bright–bright solitons can be realized in the polar and the easy-plane phases as unstable and stable configurations respectively; the latter phase can also feature stable dark–dark–dark solitons. Importantly, the persistence of these types of states upon transitioning, by means of tuning the quadratic Zeeman coefficient from one phase to the other is unravelled. Additionally, the spin-mixing dynamics of stable and unstable matter waves is analyzed, revealing among others the coherent evolution of magnetic dark–bright, nematic dark–bright–bright and dark–dark–dark solitons. Moreover, for the unstable cases unmagnetized or magnetic droplet-like configurations and spin-waves consisting of regular and magnetic solitons are seen to dynamically emerge remaining thereafter robust while propagating for extremely large evolution times. Interestingly, exposing spinorial solitons to finite temperatures, their anti-damping in trap oscillation is showcased. It is found that the latter is suppressed for stronger bright soliton component ‘fillings’. Our investigations pave the wave for a systematic production and analysis involving spin transfer processes of such waveforms which have been recently realized in ultracold experiments.

Vector dark-antidark solitary waves in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates

Ionut Danaila, M. A. Khamehchi, Vandna Gokhroo +2 more

Multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates exhibit an intriguing variety of nonlinear structures. In recent theoretical work [C. Qu, L. P. Pitaevskii, and S. Stringari, Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 160402 (2016)], the notion of magnetic solitons has been introduced. Here we examine a variant of this concept in the form of vector dark-antidark solitary waves in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We first provide concrete experimental evidence for such states in an atomic BEC and subsequently illustrate the broader concept of these states, which are based on the interplay between miscibility and intercomponent repulsion. Armed with this more general conceptual framework, we expand the notion of such states to higher dimensions presenting the possibility of both vortex-antidark states and ring-antidark-ring (dark soliton) states. We perform numerical continuation studies, investigate the existence of these states, and examine their stability using the method of Bogoliubov--de Gennes analysis. Dark-antidark and vortex-antidark states are found to be stable for broad parametric regimes. In the case of ring dark solitons, where the single-component ring state is known to be unstable, the vector entity appears to bear a progressively more and more stabilizing role as the intercomponent coupling is increased.

Observation and analysis of multiple dark-antidark solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

G. C. Katsimiga, S. I. Mistakidis, Thomas M. Bersano +6 more

We report on the static and dynamical properties of multiple dark-antidark solitons (DADs) in two-component, repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensates. Motivated by experimental observations involving multiple DADs, we present a theoretical study which showcases that bound states consisting of dark (antidark) solitons in the first (second) component of the mixture exist for different values of interspecies interactions. It is found that ensembles of few DADs may exist as stable configurations, while for larger DAD arrays, the relevant windows of stability with respect to the interspecies interaction strength become progressively narrower. Moreover, the dynamical formation of states consisting of alternating DADs in the two components of the mixture is monitored. A complex dynamical evolution of these states is observed, leading either to sorted DADs or to beating dark-dark solitons depending on the strength of the interspecies coupling. This study demonstrates clear avenues for future investigations of DAD configurations.

Two-component dark-bright solitons in three-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

Wenlong Wang, P. G. Kevrekidis

In the present work, we revisit two-component Bose-Einstein condensates in their fully three-dimensional (3D) form. Motivated by earlier studies of dark-bright solitons in the 1D case, we explore the stability of these structures in their fully 3D form in two variants. In one the dark soliton is planar and trapping a planar bright (disk) soliton. In the other case, a dark spherical shell soliton creates an effective potential in which a bright spherical shell of atoms is trapped in the second component. We identify these solutions as numerically exact states (up to a prescribed accuracy) and perform a Bogolyubov-de Gennes linearization analysis that illustrates that both structures can be dynamically stable in suitable intervals of sufficiently low chemical potentials. We corroborate this finding theoretically by analyzing the stability via degenerate perturbation theory near the linear limit of the system. When the solitary waves are found to be unstable, we explore their dynamical evolution via direct numerical simulations which, in turn, reveal wave forms that are more robust. Finally, using the SO(2) symmetry of the model, we produce multi-dark-bright planar or shell solitons involved in pairwise oscillatory motion.

Investigation of magnetic solitons in binary dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Röhrs, Rene

In this thesis, we investigate polarised solitary waves, known as magnetic solitons and dark-antidark solitons, in binary (two-component) Bose-Einstein condensates in the miscible phase. These solitons have been recently realised in experiments and are predicted to form bound states. We calculate the interaction potentials between magnetic solitons with the same and opposite polarisation, uncovering the mechanisms underlying bound state formation. By considering two superimposed counter-propagating magnetic solitons with opposite polarisation, we analytically calculate the dissociation energy of the bound states and find good agreement with full numerical simulations. Furthermore, we show that the oscillation period of bound states depends on the maximum soliton separation. We subsequently extend these results to dark-antidark solitons. For binary dipolar Bose- Einstein condensates, we derive the dispersion relation of elementary excitations and find that, in the presence of a spin-roton, spin-density modulations form around dark-antidark solitons. These modulations lead to additional local maxima and minima in the inter-soliton potentials, enabling the formation of additional bound state regions. Additionally, we compare the collision characteristics of magnetic solitons in non-dipolar systems with dark-antidark solitons in dipolar–nondipolar condensate mixtures and explore the collisions between bound states in the non-dipolar case.

Dark solitons in a trapped gas of long-range interacting bosons

Mathieu Beau, Adolfo del Campo, D. J. Frantzeskakis +2 more

We consider the interplay of repulsive short-range and same-sign long-range interactions in the dynamics of dark solitons, as prototypical coherent nonlinear excitations in a trapped one-dimensional Bose gas. First, the form of the ground state is examined, and then both the existence of the solitary waves and their stability properties are explored, and corroborated by direct numerical simulations. We find that single- and multiple-dark-soliton states can exist and are generically robust in the presence of long-range interactions. We analyze the modes of vibration of such excitations and find that their respective frequencies are significantly upshifted as the strength of the long-range interactions is increased. Indeed, we find that a prefactor of the long-range interactions considered comparable to the trap strength may upshift the dark soliton oscillation frequency by an order of magnitude, in comparison to the well established one of $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}/\sqrt{2}$ in a trap of frequency $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Omega}}$.
