Abstract We propose entropic order parameters that capture the physics of generalized symmetries and phases in QFT’s. We do it through an analysis of simple properties (additivity and Haag duality) of the net of operator algebras attached to space-time regions. We observe that different types of symmetries are associated with the breaking of these properties in regions of different non-trivial topologies. When such topologies are connected, we show that the non locally generated operators generate an Abelian symmetry group, and their commutation relations are fixed. The existence of order parameters with area law, like the Wilson loop for the confinement phase, or the ’t Hooft loop for the dual Higgs phase, is shown to imply the existence of more than one possible choice of algebras for the same underlying theory. A natural entropic order parameter arises by this non-uniqueness. We display aspects of the phases of theories with generalized symmetries in terms of these entropic order parameters. In particular, the connection between constant and area laws for dual order and disorder parameters is transparent in this approach, new constraints arising from conformal symmetry are revealed, and the algebraic origin of the Dirac quantization condition (and generalizations thereof) is described. A novel tool in this approach is the entropic certainty relation satisfied by dual relative entropies associated with complementary regions, which quantitatively relates the statistics of order and disorder parameters.

We approach the physical implications of the noncommutative nature of complementary observable algebras (COAs) from an information theoretic perspective. In particular, we derive a general entropic certainty principle stating that the sum of two relative entropies, naturally related to the COA, is equal to the so-called algebraic index of the associated inclusion. Uncertainty relations then arise by monotonicity of the relative entropies that participate in the underlying entropic certainty. Examples and applications are described in quantum field theories with global symmetries, where the COAs are formed by the charge-anticharge local operators (intertwiners) and the unitary representations of the symmetry group (twists), and in theories with local symmetries, where the COAs are formed by Wilson and t'Hooft loops. In general, the entropic certainty principle naturally captures the physics of order and disorder parameters, a feature that makes it a generic handle for the information theoretic characterization of quantum phases.
In this thesis, we study aspects of entanglement theory of quantum field theories from an algebraic point of view. The main motivation is to gain insights about the general structure of the entanglement in QFT, towards a definition of an entropic version of QFT. In the opposite direction, we are also interested in exploring any consequence of the entanglement in algebraic QFT. This may help us to reveal unknown features of QFT, with the final aim of finding a dynamical principle which allows us to construct non-trivial and rigorous models of QFT. The algebraic approach is the natural framework to define and study entanglement in QFT, and hence, to pose the above inquiries. After a self-contained review of algebraic QFT and quantum information theory in operator algebras, we focus on our results. We compute, in a mathematically rigorous way, exact solutions of entanglement measures and modular Hamiltonians for specific QFT models, using algebraic tools from modular theory of von Neumann algebras. These calculations show explicitly non-local features of modular Hamiltonians and help us to solve ambiguities that arise in other non-rigorous computations. We also study aspects of entanglement entropy in theories having superselection sectors coming from global symmetries. We follow the algebraic perspective of Doplicher, Haag, and Roberts. In this way, we find an entropic order parameter that "measures" the size of the symmetry group, which is made out of a difference of two mutual informations. Moreover, we identify the main operators that take account of such a difference, and we obtain a new quantum information quantity, the entropic certainty relation, involving algebras containing such operators. This certainty relation keeps an intrinsic connection with subfactor theory of von Neumann algebras.
Anyon condensation that describes the transition between topological quantum field theories can be formulated in the language of tensor categories or that of operator algebras. We deploy the formalism of Doplicher-Haag-Roberts bimodules over quasi-local C∗-algebras recently developed in [1] to investigate anyon condensation, which is associated with an extension of a certain operator algebra. The connection between notions in the two formulations is thereby made manifest in an intuitive, diagrammatic manner. An entropic order parameter, as the quantum information-theoretic measure characterising a condensation, is naturally defined, and we give a very simple proof of a bound on it.
Abstract We prove a recent conjecture by Harlow and Ooguri concerning a universal formula for the charged density of states in QFT at high energies for global symmetries associated with finite groups. An equivalent statement, based on the entropic order parameter associated with charged operators in the thermofield double state, was proven in a previous article by Casini, Huerta, Pontello, and the present author. Here we describe how the statement about the entropic order parameter arises, and how it gets transformed into the universal density of states. The use of the certainty principle, relating the entropic order and disorder parameters, is crucial for the proof. We remark that although the immediate application of this result concerns charged states, the origin and physics of such density can be understood by looking at the vacuum sector only. We also describe how these arguments lie at the origin of the so-called entropy equipartition in these type of systems, and how they generalize to QFT’s on non-compact manifolds.
High temperature is usually expected to destroy order: as the Gibbs state approaches the infinite-temperature limit, it becomes an equal-weight ensemble over all states and the system is generically disordered. Recent works showed that entropic order can violate this expectation through coupling to bosons in classical lattice models and quantum field theories, where the ordered states have higher entropy. Here we present new analytic methods for constructing quantum lattice models that exhibit entropic orders. In particular, we construct quantum lattice models with continuous symmetry breaking at high temperature in 1+1 dimensions and clarify how entropic order can evade the Hohenberg-Mermin-Wagner theorems. We also construct high-temperature entropic p+ip chiral topological superconducting states in 2+1 dimensions with temperature-independent anyon correlation functions. In addition, we obtain a broad family of high-temperature entropic non-chiral topological orders. We show that the entropic topological orders have strong higher form symmetries at high temperature unlike the conventional topological orders, and the symmetry is spontaneously broken. These results follow from two general constructions that couple a given lattice model with a low-temperature ordered phase either to ordered bosons or, for local commuting-projector Hamiltonians, to more general bosonic degrees of freedom.
Topological phases exhibit unconventional order that cannot be detected by any local order parameter. In the framework of projected entangled pair states, topological order is characterized by an entanglement symmetry of the local tensor that describes the model. This symmetry can take the form of a tensor product of group representations [for quantum double models D(G) of a group G], or in the more general case a correlated symmetry action in the form of a matrix product operator (MPO), which encompasses all string-net models, including those that are not quantum double models. Among other things, these entanglement symmetries allow for the succinct description of ground states and topological excitations (anyons). Recently, the idea has been put forward to use those symmetries and the anyonic objects they describe as order parameters for probing topological phase transitions, and the applicability of this idea has been demonstrated for Abelian groups. In this paper, we extend this construction to the domain of non-Abelian models with MPO symmetries, and we use it to study the breakdown of topological order in the double Fibonacci (DFib) string-net model and its Galois conjugate, namely the non-Hermitian double Yang-Lee (DYL) string-net model. We start by showing how to construct topological order parameters for condensation and deconfinement of anyons using the MPO symmetries. Subsequently, we set up interpolations from the DFib and the DYL model to the trivial phase, and we show that these can be mapped to certain restricted solid on solid (RSOS) models, which are equivalent to the $[(5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\sqrt{5})/2]$-state Potts model, respectively. Moreover, the order parameter for condensation maps to the RSOS order parameter. The known exact solutions of the statistical models subsequently allow us to locate the critical points of the models, and to predict the critical exponents for the order parameters from conformal field theory. We complement this by numerical study of the phase transitions, which fully confirms our theoretical predictions; remarkably, we find that both models exhibit a duality between the behavior of order parameters for condensation and deconfinement.
