Abstract

Abstract Among the quantum many-body models that host anyon excitation and topological orders, quantum dimer models (QDM) provide a suitable playground for studying the relation between single-anyon and multi-anyon continuum spectra. However, as the prototypical correlated system with local constraints, the generic solution of QDM at different lattice geometry and parameter regimes is still missing due to the lack of controlled methodologies. Here we obtain, via sweeping cluster quantum Monte Carlo algorithm, the excitation spectra in different phases of the triangular lattice QDM. Our results reveal the single vison excitations inside the Z2 quantum spin liquid (QSL) and its condensation towards the $$\sqrt{12}\times \sqrt{12}$$ 12 × 12 valence bond solid (VBS), and demonstrate the translational symmetry fractionalization and emergent O(4) symmetry at the QSL-VBS transition. We find the single vison excitations, whose convolution qualitatively reproduces the dimer spectra, are not free but subject to interaction effects throughout the transition. The nature of the VBS with its O(4) order parameters are unearthed in full scope. Our approach opens the avenue for generic solution of the static and dynamic properties of QDMs and has relevance towards the realization and detection of fractional excitations in programmable quantum simulators.

Vison condensation and spinon confinement in a kagome-lattice Z 2 spin liquid: A numerical study of a quantum dimer model

Kyusung Hwang

Quantum spin liquids are exotic many-body states featured with long-range entanglement and fractional anyon quasiparticles. Quantum phase transitions of spin liquids are particularly interesting problems related with novel phenomena of anyon condensation and anyon confinement. Here we study a quantum dimer model, which implements a transition between a Z 2 spin liquid ( Z 2 SL ) and a valence bond solid (VBS) on the kagome lattice. The transition is driven by the condensation of vison excitation of the Z 2 spin liquid, which impacts on other anyon excitations especially leading to the confinement of spinon excitations. By numerical exact diagonalization of the dimer model, we directly measure the vison condensation using vison string operators, and explicitly check a confining potential acting on spinon excitations in the VBS state. It is observed that topological degeneracy of the spin-liquid state is lifted concomitantly with the vison condensation. The dimer ordering pattern of the VBS state is identified by investigating dimer structure factor. Furthermore, we find an interesting state that exhibits features of spin liquid and VBS simultaneously. We discuss the origin of the mixed behaviors and possible scenarios expected in thermodynamic limit. This work complements the previous analytical studies on the dimer model [ and ] by providing numerical evidences on the vison condensation and the spinon confinement in the Z 2 SL -to-VBS transition. Anyon condensation and confinement transition in a Kitaev spin liquid bilayer

Kyusung Hwang

Transitions between quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are fundamental problems lying beyond the Landau paradigm and requiring a deep understanding of the entanglement structures of QSLs called topological orders. The novel concept of anyon condensation has been proposed as a theoretical mechanism, predicting various possible transitions between topological orders, but it has long been elusive to confirm the mechanism in quantum spin systems. Here, we introduce a concrete spin model that incarnates the mechanism of the anyon condensation transition. Our model harbors two topological QSLs in different parameter regions, a non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) bilayer state and a resonating valence bond (RVB) state. The bilayer-KSL-to-RVB transition indeed occurs by the mechanism of anyon condensation, which we identify by using parton theories and exact diagonalization studies. Moreover, we observe “anyon confinement” phenomena in our numerical results, akin to the quark confinement in high-energy physics. Namely, non-Abelian Ising anyons of the bilayer KSL are confined in the transition to the RVB state. Implications and extensions of this study are discussed in various aspects such as (i) anyon-condensed multilayer construction of Kitaev's 16-fold way of anyon theories, (ii) an additional vison condensation transition from the RVB to a valence bond solid in the Kitaev bilayer system, (iii) dynamical anyon condensation in a non-Hermitian Kitaev bilayer, (iv) generalizations of our model to other lattice geometries, and (v) experimental realizations. This work puts together the two fascinating QSLs that are extensively studied in modern condensed matter and quantum physics into a concrete spin model, offering a comprehensive picture that unifies the anyon physics of the Kitaev spin liquids and the resonating valence bonds. Dynamical Signature of Symmetry Fractionalization in Frustrated Magnets

Guang-Yu Sun, Yan-Cheng Wang, Chen Fang +3 more

The nontriviality of quantum spin liquids (QSLs) typically manifests in the nonlocal observables that signify their existence; however, this fact actually casts a shadow on detecting QSLs with experimentally accessible probes. Here, we provide a solution by unbiasedly demonstrating a dynamical signature of anyonic excitations and symmetry fractionalization in QSLs. Employing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation and stochastic analytic continuation, we investigate the extended XXZ model on the kagome lattice, and find out that, across the phase transitions from Z_{2} QSLs to different symmetry breaking phases, spin spectral functions can reveal the presence and condensation of emergent anyonic spinon and vison excitations, in particular, the translational symmetry fractionalization of the latter, which can be served as the dynamical signature of the seemingly ephemeral QSLs in spectroscopic techniques such as inelastic neutron or resonance (inelastic) x-ray scatterings.

Hidden orders and phase transitions for the fully packed quantum loop model on the triangular lattice

Xiaoxue Ran, Zheng Yan, Yan-Cheng Wang +5 more

Abstract Quantum loop and dimer models are prototypical correlated systems with local constraints, which are not only intimately connected to lattice gauge theories and topological orders but are also widely applicable to the broad research areas of quantum materials and quantum simulation. Employing our sweeping cluster quantum Monte Carlo algorithm, we reveal the complete phase diagram of the triangular-lattice fully packed quantum loop model. Apart from the known lattice nematic (LN) solid and the even $${{\mathbb{Z}}}_{2}$$ Z 2 quantum spin liquid (QSL) phases, we discover a hidden vison plaquette (VP) phase, which had been overlooked and misinterpreted as a QSL for more than a decade. Moreover, the VP-to-QSL continuous transition belongs to the (2 + 1)D cubic* universality class, which offers a lattice realization of the (fractionalized) cubic fixed point that had long been considered as irrelevant towards the O(3) symmetry until corrected recently by conformal bootstrap calculations. Our results are therefore of relevance to recent developments in both experiments and theory, and facilitate further investigations of hidden phases and transitions.

Topological solid phase in a quantum dimer model

Jianhua Yang, Tao Li

We present an example for the phase transition between a topological non-trivial solid phase and a trivial solid phase in the quantum dimer model(QDM) on triangular lattice. Such a transition is beyond the Landau's paradigm of phase transition. We have characterized such a transition with the topological entanglement entropy(TEE) of the system, which is found to change from $γ=\ln 2$ in the topological solid phase to zero in the trivial solid phase, through a pronounced peak around the transition point. We also calculated the correlation function of the vison excitation in the QDM and find that the vison condensate develops right at the topological transition point. These results imply that the topological order and the related fractionalized excitation can coexist with conventional symmetry breaking order.

Translation-enriched $Z_2$ spin liquids and topological vison bands: Possible application to $α$-RuCl$_3$

Xue-Yang Song, T. Senthil

Inspired by experiments on the magnetic field induced phases of the spin-orbit coupled $2d$ Mott insulator $α$-RuCl$_3$, we study some general aspects of gapped $Z_2$ Quantum Spin Liquids (QSL) enriched by lattice translation symmetry. We show that there are $12$ distinct such phases with different implementations of translation symmetry. In some of these phases the vison excitations of this QSL may form topological Chern bands. We explore a phenomenological description of a putative $Z_2$ QSL as a candidate ground state at intermediate magnetic fields in $α$-RuCl$_3$. This state has broad continuum spectra in neutron scattering, a "bosonic" thermal Hall signal that goes to zero at zero temperature, and a natural connection with a zigzag magnetic ordered state, all of which are also seen in $α$-RuCl$_3$. On general grounds continuum scattering will also be seen at multiple points in the Brillouin zone in this state.
