Abstract

In this work, a canonical method to compute entanglement entropy is proposed. We show that for two-dimensional conformal theories defined in a torus, a choice of moduli space allows the typical entropy operator of the TFD to provide the entanglement entropy of the degrees of freedom defined in a segment and their complement. In this procedure, it is not necessary to make an analytic continuation from the Rényi entropy and the von Neumann entanglement entropy is calculated directly from the expected value of an entanglement entropy operator. We also propose a model for the evolution of the entanglement entropy and show that it grows linearly with time.

Entanglement entropy between real and virtual particles in ϕ4 quantum field theory

Juan Sebastián Ardenghi

The aim of this work is to compute the entanglement entropy of real and virtual particles by rewriting the generating functional of ${\ensuremath{\phi}}^{4}$ theory as a mean value between states and observables defined through the correlation functions. Then the von Neumann definition of entropy can be applied to these quantum states and in particular, for the partial traces taken over the internal or external degrees of freedom. This procedure can be done for each order in the perturbation expansion showing that the entanglement entropy for real and virtual particles behaves as $\mathrm{ln}({m}_{0})$. In particular, entanglement entropy is computed at first order for the correlation function of two external points showing that mutual information is identical to the external entropy and that conditional entropies are negative for all the domain of ${m}_{0}$. In turn, from the definition of the quantum states, it is possible to obtain general relations between total traces between different quantum states of a ${\ensuremath{\phi}}^{r}$ theory. Finally, discussion about the possibility of taking partial traces over external degrees of freedom is considered, which implies the introduction of some observables that measure space-time points where an interaction occurs.

Notes on Quantum Entanglement of Local Operators

Masahiro Nozaki A

This is an expanded version of the short report arXiv:1401.0539 , where we studied the time evolution of (Renyi) entanglement entropies for the excited state defined by acting a given local operator on the ground state. In the present paper, we introduce (Renyi) entanglement entropies of given local operators which are defined by late time values of excesses of (Renyi) entanglement entropies. They measure the degrees of freedom of local operators and characterize them in conformal field theories from the viewpoint of quantum entanglement. We explain how to compute them in free massless scalar field theories and we also investigate their time evolution. Our results can be interpreted in terms of the relativistic propagation of entangled pairs. The main new results which we acquire in the present paper are as follows. Firstly, we provide an explanation which shows that (Renyi) entanglement entropies of a specific operator are given by (Renyi) entanglement entropies whose reduced density matrices are given by the binomial distribution. That operator is constructed of only the scalar field. Secondly, we found the sum rule which (Renyi) entanglement entropies of those local operators obey. Those local operators are located separately. Moreover we argue that (Renyi) entanglement entropies of specific operators in conformal field theories are given by (Renyi) entanglement entropies whose reduced density matrices are given by the binomial distribution. These specific operators are constructed of single-species operators. We also argue that general operators obey the sum rule which we mentioned above.

Evolution of entanglement entropy in one-dimensional systems

Pasquale Calabrese, John Cardy

We study the unitary time evolution of the entropy of entanglement of a one-dimensional system between the degrees of freedom in an interval of length and its complement, starting from a pure state which is not an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian. We use path integral methods of quantum field theory as well as explicit computations for the transverse Ising spin chain. In both cases, there is a maximum speed v of propagation of signals. In general the entanglement entropy increases linearly with time t up to , after which it saturates at a value proportional to , the coefficient depending on the initial state. This behaviour may be understood as a consequence of causality.

Entanglement entropy in conformal quantum mechanics

Michele Arzano, Alessandra D’Alise, Domenico Frattulillo

A bstract We consider sets of states in conformal quantum mechanics associated to generators of time evolution whose orbits cover different regions of the time domain. States labelled by a continuous global time variable define the two-point correlation functions of the theory seen as a one-dimensional conformal field theory. Such states exhibit the structure of a thermofield double built on bipartite eigenstates of generators of non-global time evolution. In terms of the correspondence between radial conformal symmetries in Minkowski space-time and time evolution in conformal quantum mechanics proposed in [1, 2] these generators coincide with conformal Killing vectors tangent to worldlines of Milne and diamond observers at constant radius. The temperature of the thermofield double states in conformal quantum mechanics reproduces the temperatures perceived by such diamond and Milne observers. We calculate the entanglement entropy associated to the thermofield double states and obtain a UV divergent logarithmic behaviour analogous to known results in two-dimensional conformal field theory in which the entangling boundary is point-like.

Evolution of entanglement entropy in the D1-D5 brane system

Curtis T. Asplund, Steven G. Avery

We calculate the evolution of the geometric entanglement entropy following a local quench in the D1-D5 conformal field theory, a two-dimensional theory that describes a particular bound state of D1 and D5 branes. The quench corresponds to a localized insertion of the exactly marginal operator that deforms the field theory off of the orbifold (free) point in its moduli space. This deformation ultimately leads to thermalization of the system. We find an exact analytic expression for the entanglement entropy of any spatial interval as a function of time after the quench and analyze its properties. This process is holographically dual to one stage in the formation of a stringy black hole.
