Abstract

We construct and study relativistic anyons in $1+1$ dimensions generalizing well-known models of Dirac fermions. First, a model of free anyons is constructed and then extended in two ways: (i) by adding density-density interactions, as in the Luttinger model, and (ii) by coupling the free anyons to a U(1)-gauge field, as in the Schwinger model. Second, physical properties of these extensions are studied. By investigating off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) at zero temperature, we show that anyonic statistics allows one to get arbitrarily close to ODLRO but that this possibility is destroyed by the gauge coupling. The latter is due to a nonzero effective mass generated by gauge invariance, which we show also implies the presence of screening, independently of the anyonic statistics.

GAUGE INVARIANCE AND BROKEN SYMMETRIES IN ANYON SUPERFLUIDS

D. Boyanovsky

We review aspects of broken symmetry and the nature of long range order in theories of anyons starting with bosons with a statistical interaction. We introduce a novel gauge invariant quantization scheme that allows the identification of local and gauge invariant order parameters. The connection between spin and statistics is reviewed and the consequences of broken symmetries in the anyon representation are discussed. An anyon gas is studied in the Bogoliubov approximation, it is determined that the ground state is a condensate of charge-flux composites with “quasi-long-range order” at zero temperature, a “weak” gap in the spectrum and finite helicity modulus. The system is disordered at nonzero temperatures. The disorder is not caused by Goldstone bosons but by the strong infrared behavior arising from the Coulomb interaction induced by the long-range statistical interaction. The properties of topological vortices in nonrelativistic and in relativistic Landau-Ginzburg theories are studied in detail. We study the physics of the mean-field ansatz and quasi-long range order in a simple exactly soluble relativistic model. This model exhibits a novel phenomenon of charge redistribution to the boundaries and restoration of translational invariance in the infinite volume limit. It also illuminates the physics of quasi-long-range order with a gap in the spectrum, statistical charge polarization by external magnetic fields and the role of “large” gauge transformations.

Deviations from off-diagonal long-range order in one-dimensional quantum systems

A. Colcelli, Giuseppe Mussardo, Andrea Trombettoni

A quantum system exhibits off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) when the largest eigenvalue of the one-body-density matrix scales as , where N is the total number of particles. Putting to define the scaling exponent , then corresponds to ODLRO and to the single-particle occupation of the density matrix orbitals. When , can be used to quantify deviations from ODLRO. In this paper we study the exponent in a variety of one-dimensional bosonic and anyonic quantum systems at T = 0. For the 1D Lieb-Liniger Bose gas we find that for small interactions is close to 1, implying a mesoscopic condensation, i.e. , a value of the zero temperature "condensate" fraction appreciable at finite values of N (as the ones in experiments with 1D ultracold atoms). 1D anyons provide the possibility to fully interpolate between and 0. The behaviour of for these systems is found to be non-monotonic both with respect to the coupling constant and the statistical parameter.

Long-range order of two interacting anyon-gas layers of opposite statistical charge

C. A. A. de Carvalho, D. Boyanovsky

We study aspects of long-range order in a model consisting of two interacting layers of anyon gases with opposite statistical charge. We start with bosons with a statistical interaction and second quantize the theory using an approach that uses a local and gauge-invariant order parameter. We then study this model in the Bogoliubov approximation. We explicitly compute the depletion from the condensate and gauge-invariant correlation functions. We show that the ground state is a ``weak'' condensate of charge-flux composites with ``nearly long-range order.'' The condensate becomes statistically neutral in the thermodynamic limit. It is pointed out that the ``nearly long-range order'' at zero temperature has its origins in the logarithmic infrared singularities arising from the two-dimensional Coulomb repulsion induced by the long-range statistical interaction. The quasiparticle spectrum consists of one massless mode, and a plasmon mode with a weak gap. The system is quasiordered at any nonzero temperature, but we present evidence for a finite helicity modulus.

Two identical one-dimensional anyons with zero-range interactions: Exchange statistics, scattering theory, and anyon-anyon mapping

Raúl Hidalgo-Sacoto, Thomas Busch, D. Blume

While elementary particles obey either bosonic or fermionic exchange statistics, generalized exchange statistics that interpolate between bosons and fermions---applicable to quasiparticles---constitute an intriguing topic from both the fundamental and practical points of view. This work develops a scattering framework for two identical one-dimensional (1D) bosonic anyons and two identical 1D fermionic anyons with zero-range contact interactions. The two-body system with zero-range interactions, in both free space and under external confinement, is used to illustrate the recently proposed bosonic-anyon---fermionic-anyon mapping (R. Hidalgo-Sacoto et al., Phys. Rev. A 112, 063309 (2025)), which connects the eigenstates of bosonic anyons to those of fermionic anyons and vice versa. Performing explicit calculations for two-particle systems, the momentum distributions and the off-diagonal correlations of the single-particle density matrix for bosonic anyons and fermionic anyons are confirmed to be distinct. We also confirm the previously derived asymptotic coefficients of the momentum distribution tail at orders ${k}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ and ${k}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ for two harmonically confined anyons. Nonuniversal contributions at order ${k}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ are discussed.

Fractionalization of Itinerant Anyons in One-Dimensional Chains

Didier Poilblanc, Matthias Troyer, Eddy Ardonne +1 more

We construct models of interacting itinerant non-Abelian anyons moving along one-dimensional chains, focusing, in particular, on itinerant Ising anyon chains, and derive effective anyonic t-J models for the low-energy sectors. Solving these models by exact diagonalization, we find a fractionalization of the anyons into charge and (non-Abelian) anyonic degrees of freedom--a generalization of spin-charge separation of electrons which occurs in Luttinger liquids. A detailed description of the excitation spectrum by combining spectra for charge and anyonic sectors requires a subtle coupling between charge and anyonic excitations at the microscopic level (which we also find to be present in Luttinger liquids), despite the macroscopic fractionalization.

Mean-field theory for self-interacting relativistic Luttinger fermions

Holger Gies A, Marta Picciau

We investigate a class of quantum field theories with relativistic Luttinger fermions and local self-interaction in scalar channels. For an understanding of possible low-energy phases, we first classify the set of mass terms arising from scalar fermion bilinears. For large flavor numbers, we show that each of our models features a coupling branch in which the theory is asymptotically free. In order to address the long-range behavior, we use mean-field theory which is exact in the limit of large flavor numbers. We identify two models which undergo dimensional transmutation, interconnecting the asymptotically free high-energy regime with an ordered low-energy phase sustaining a vacuum condensate. We also study the analytic structure of the Luttinger-fermionic propagator in the various possible gapped phases.
