Echoes of a squeezed oscillator

Abstract

Pulses applied to an inhomogeneously broadened set of harmonic oscillators, previously prepared in squeezed states, can lead to a recovery of coherence, manifesting itself as echoes, similar to those exhibited by an ensemble of spins when excited by properly designed electromagnetic pulses. Such echoes, of classical or quantum nature, are expected to arise in the squeezing of linear systems of various sorts and, in particular, light and vibrational modes.

Photon echoes with coherent and squeezed pulses

A. S. Parkins, Crispin W. Gardiner

Sequences of coherent and squeezed pulses incident upon an inhomogeneously broadened two-level medium are examined and found to yield new forms of photon echoes. These echoes do not require a second coherent pulse to initiate the rephasing process. Rather, they are a consequence of the two different transverse atomic relaxation rates that exist for the duration of the squeezed pulse. These echoes suggest new ways of detecting and measuring squeezed light and of examining relaxation processes.

Theory of nonlinear optical experiments with harmonic oscillators

John T. Fourkas, Hitoshi Kawashima, Keith Adam Nelson

We develop a theory of photon-echo phenomena in harmonic vibrational modes. Although classical harmonic oscillators cannot produce any nonlinear optical signal in the linear response limit, we demonstrate that quantum harmonic oscillators that are coupled to any physically reasonable bath can give rise to novel nonlinear optical behavior, even in the perturbative limit. We show that photon echoes in high-frequency vibrational modes are strongly affected by both population relaxation and pure dephasing. The time dependence of the echo signal is shown to be highly sensitive to the amount of inhomogeneous broadening in the vibrational line. As an example, we develop the simple model of population relaxation resulting from linear coupling to the bath and pure dephasing resulting from quadratic coupling to the bath. Counter to the classical picture, echo signal is present when the only coupling to the bath is linear, but absent when the only coupling is quadratic.

Open Systems Dynamics for Propagating Quantum Fields

Ben Q. Baragiola

In this dissertation, I explore interactions between matter and propagating light. The electromagnetic field is modeled as a reservoir of quantum harmonic oscillators successively streaming past a quantum system. Each weak and fleeting interaction entangles the light and the system, and the light continues its course. Within the framework of open quantum systems, the light is eventually traced out, leaving the reduced quantum state of the system as the primary mathematical subject. Two major results are presented. The first is a master equation approach for a quantum system interacting with a traveling wave packet prepared with a definite number of photons. In contrast to quasi-classical states, such as coherent or thermal fields, these N-photon states possess temporal mode entanglement, and local interactions in time have nonlocal consequences. The second is a model for a three-dimensional light-matter interface for an atomic ensemble interacting with a paraxial laser beam and its application to the generation of QND spin squeezing. Both coherent and incoherent dynamics due to spatially inhomogeneous atom-light coupling across the ensemble are accounted for. Measurement of paraxially scattered light can generate squeezing of an atomic spin wave, while diffusely scattered photons lead to spatially local decoherence.

Photon Echo from Localized Excitons in Semiconductor Nanostructures

S. V. Poltavtsev, I. A. Yugova, Ilya A. Akimov +2 more

An overview on photon echo spectroscopy under resonant excitation of the exciton complexes in semiconductor nanostructures is presented. The use of four-wave-mixing technique with the pulsed excitation and heterodyne detection allowed us to measure the coherent response of the system with the picosecond time resolution. It is shown that, for resonant selective pulsed excitation of the localized exciton complexes, the coherent signal is represented by the photon echoes due to the inhomogeneous broadening of the optical transitions. In case of resonant excitation of the trions or donor-bound excitons, the Zeeman splitting of the resident electron ground state levels under the applied transverse magnetic field results in quantum beats of photon echo amplitude at the Larmor precession frequency. Application of magnetic field makes it possible to transfer coherently the optical excitation into the spin ensemble of the resident electrons and to observe a long-lived photon echo signal. The described technique can be used as a high-resolution spectroscopy of the energy splittings in the ground state of the system. Next, we consider the Rabi oscillations and their damping under excitation with intensive optical pulses for the excitons complexes with a different degree of localization. It is shown that damping of the echo signal with increase of the excitation pulse intensity is strongly manifested for excitons, while on trions and donor-bound excitons this effect is substantially weaker.
