Phase diagram for the bisected-hexagonal-lattice five-state Potts antiferromagnet

Abstract

In this paper we study the phase diagram of the five-state Potts antiferromagnet on the bisected-hexagonal lattice. This question is important since Delfino and Tartaglia recently showed that a second-order transition in a five-state Potts antiferromagnet is allowed, and the bisected-hexagonal lattice had emerged as a candidate for such a transition on numerical grounds. By using high-precision Monte Carlo simulations and two complementary analysis methods, we conclude that there is a finite-temperature first-order transition point. This one separates a paramagnetic high-temperature phase, and a low-temperature phase where five phases coexist. This phase transition is very weak in the sense that its latent heat (per edge) is two orders of magnitude smaller than that of other well-known weak first-order phase transitions.

Phase Diagram of the Antiferromagnetic Potts Model with Number q = 4 of Spin States in the Hexagonal Lattice

Abstract The Wang–Landau algorithm of the Monte Carlo method is used to study the magnetic structures of the ground state, phase transitions, and thermodynamic properties of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Potts model with number q = 4 of spin states in a hexagonal lattice with the interactions of the nearest (J1) and next-to-nearest (J2) neighbors. The exchange interaction ratios in the range of 0.0 ≤ r = |J2/J1| ≤ 1.0 are studied. A phase diagram of the dependence of the critical temperature on the exchange interaction value of the next-to-nearest neighbors is constructed. The nature of phase transitions is analyzed. It is found that a first-order phase transition is observed in the range of 0.1 ≤ r ≤ 1.0, while there is no phase transition in the system and a strong degeneracy of the ground state is observed at r = 0.0.

Phase diagram of the Z(5) model on a square lattice

Eytan Domany, David Mukamel, A. Schwimmer

A general five-state model, which contains the five-state Potts model and a solid-on-solid model as special cases, is studied. The authors find that the high-temperature paramagnetic and the low-temperature ordered phases are separated either by a line of first-order transitions or by an intermediate phase with algebraic decay of correlations. The phase diagram is proposed on the basis of general considerations and Monte-Carlo simulations.

Finite-Temperature Phase Transition in a Class of Four-State Potts Antiferromagnets

Youjin Deng, Yuan Huang, Jesper Lykke Jacobsen +2 more

We argue that the four-state Potts antiferromagnet has a finite-temperature phase transition on any Eulerian plane triangulation in which one sublattice consists of vertices of degree 4. We furthermore predict the universality class of this transition. We then present transfer-matrix and Monte Carlo data confirming these predictions for the cases of the Union Jack and bisected hexagonal lattices.

Phase transitions in the two-dimensional ferro- and antiferromagnetic potts models on a triangular lattice

Akai Kurbanovich Murtazaev, Albert Babaevich Babaev

The phase transitions in the two-dimensional ferro- and antiferromagnetic Potts models with q = 3 states of spin on a triangular lattice are studied using cluster algorithms and the classical Monte Carlo method. Systems with linear sizes L = 20–120 are considered. The method of fourth-order Binder cumulants and histogram analysis are used to discover that a second-order phase transition occurs in the ferromagnetic Potts model and a first-order phase transition takes place in the antiferromagnetic Potts model. The static critical indices of heat capacity (α), magnetic susceptibility (γ), magnetization (β), and correlation radius index (ν) are calculated for the ferromagnetic Potts model using the finite-size scaling theory.

Three-state Potts model on the maple leaf lattice

Z. F. Wang, B. W. Southern

We use Monte Carlo methods to study the three-state Potts model on a two-dimensional lattice with fivefold coordination. The lattice consists of triangular and hexagonal units and has properties intermediate between the triangular and kagom\'e lattices. The critical behavior of both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic cases is considered. As expected, the critical behavior of the ferromagnetic model is independent of the lattice details and lies in the universality class of the three-state ferromagnetic Potts model. A critical end point is found at the coexistence between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases, and the transition to the antiferromagnetic state is always first order.

The Monte Carlo method is used to study phase transitions in the two-dimensional Potts model with the number of states spin q=3 on square and hexagonal lattices. Considered systems with linear dimensions Lx L=N, L=21/102. The obtained numerical data indicate that in the considered In the Potts model, a second-order phase transition is observed in accordance with the analytical theory. The Binder cumulants method of the fourth order determines the values of the critical points of the Potts model on different lattices.
