Discrete quantum walks are periodically driven systems with discrete time evolution. In contrast to ordinary Floquet systems, no microscopic Hamiltonian exists, and the one-period time evolution is given directly by a series of unitary operators. Regarding each constituent unitary operator as a discrete time step, we formulate discrete space-time symmetry in quantum walks and evaluate the corresponding symmetry protected topological phases. In particular, we study chiral and/or time-glide symmetric topological quantum walks in this formalism. Due to the discrete nature of time evolution, the topological classification is found to be different from that in conventional Floquet systems. As a concrete example, we study a two-dimensional quantum walk having both chiral and time-glide symmetries and identify the anomalous edge states protected by these symmetries.
Periodically driven systems have displayed a variety of fascinating phenomena without analogies in static systems, which enrich the classification of quantum phases of matter and stimulate a wide range of research interests. Here, we employ discrete-time quantum walks to investigate a nontrivial topological effect unique to a two-dimensional periodically driven system: chiral edge states can exist at the interface of Floquet insulators whose Chern numbers vanish. Thanks to a resource-saving and flexible fiber-loop architecture, we realize inhomogeneous two-dimensional quantum walks up to 25 steps, over an effective 51×51 lattice with tunable local parameters. Spin-polarized chiral edge states are observed at the boundary of two distinct quantum walk domains. Our results contribute to establishing a well-controlled platform for exploring nontrivial topological phases.
We formulate a one-dimensional flux-controlled anomalous Floquet quantum walk and show that it admits a direct microscopic realization in a driven bipartite lattice. The walk consists of a coin-dependent drift step and a momentum-dependent coin mixing step, so the same evolution operator governs quasienergy bands, boundary modes, and bulk dynamics in real space. Because the walk is chiral, the quasienergy gaps at
0 and
π/T carry independent topological information, which organizes trivial,
0-only,
π-only, and coexistence sectors in the
(M,φ) plane. In the coexistence sector, a
0 mode and a
π mode reside on the same edge and span a natural boundary logical subspace. One Floquet period acts there as a relative phase operation and produces a clear
2T response in local boundary observables. In the bulk, the same anomalous Floquet structure is probed dynamically in two complementary ways. Frame-resolved mean chiral displacements approach the two winding numbers in the clean pre-reflection window of the symmetric time frames, while selected benchmark cuts at a representative
0 gap closing and a representative
π gap closing exhibit distinct local stroboscopic responses, with the
π gap benchmark showing a much stronger odd-even alternation. The boundary logical subspace and the bulk dynamical probes are therefore organized within one flux-controlled anomalous Floquet quantum walk, suggesting a symmetry-protected route to quantum-walk information primitives in driven microstructured lattices.
