Abstract

We compute the Lyapunov exponent characterizing quantum scrambling in a family of generalized Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models, which can be tuned between different low temperature states from Fermi liquids, through non-Fermi liquids, to fast scramblers. The analytic calculation, controlled by a small coupling constant and large $N$, allows us to clarify the relations between the quasiparticle relaxation rate $1/\ensuremath{\tau}$ and the Lyapunov exponent ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{L}$ characterizing scrambling. In the Fermi liquid states we find that the quasiparticle relaxation rate dictates the Lyapunov exponent. In non-Fermi liquids, where $1/\ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\gg}T$, we find that ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{L}$ is always $T$ linear with a prefactor that is independent of the coupling constant in the limit of weak coupling. Instead it is determined by a scaling exponent that characterizes the relaxation rate. ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{L}$ approaches the general upper bound $2\ensuremath{\pi}T$ at the transition to a fast scrambling state. Finally, in a marginal Fermi liquid state the exponent is linear in temperature with a prefactor that vanishes as a nonanalytic function $\ensuremath{\sim}gln(1/g)$ of the coupling constant $g$.

Solvable model for a dynamical quantum phase transition from fast to slow scrambling

Sumilan Banerjee, Ehud Altman

We propose an extension of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model that exhibits a quantum phase transition from the previously identified non-Fermi-liquid fixed point to a Fermi-liquid-like state, while still allowing an exact solution in a suitable large-$N$ limit. The extended model involves coupling the interacting $N$-site SYK model to a new set of $pN$ peripheral sites with only quadratic hopping terms between them. The conformal fixed point of the SYK model remains a stable low-energy phase below a critical ratio of peripheral sites $p<{p}_{c}(n)$ that depends on the fermion filling $n$. The scrambling dynamics throughout the non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) phase is characterized by a universal Lyapunov exponent ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\mathrm{L}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2\ensuremath{\pi}T$ in the low-temperature limit; however, the temperature scale marking the crossover to the conformal regime vanishes continuously at the critical point ${p}_{c}$. The residual entropy at $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$, nonzero in the NFL, also vanishes continuously at the critical point. For $p>{p}_{c}$ the quadratic sites effectively screen the SYK dynamics, leading to a quadratic fixed point in the low-temperature and low-frequency limit. The interactions have a perturbative effect in this regime leading to scrambling with Lyapunov exponent ${\ensuremath{\lambda}}_{\mathrm{L}}\ensuremath{\propto}{T}^{2}$.

Low-rank Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

Jaewon Kim, Xiangyu Cao, Ehud Altman

Motivated by recent proposals of experimental realization of fast scramblers, we study a family of solvable variants of the ($q=4$) Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model in which the rank and eigenvalue distribution of the coupling matrix ${J}_{ij,kl}$ are tuneable. When the rank is proportional to the number of fermions, the low temperature behavior is sensitive to the eigenvalue distribution. We obtain a complete classification of the possible non-Fermi liquid quantum phases. These include two previously studied phases whose fermion scaling dimension depends continuously on the rank; we show that they are maximally chaotic, but necessitate an extensively degenerate or negative semidefinite coupling matrix. More generic distributions give rise to ``almost Fermi liquids'' with a scaling dimension $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}=1/2$, but which differ from a genuine Fermi liquid in quasiparticle decay rate, quantum Lyapunov exponent, and/or specific heat.

Fast Scrambling at the Boundary

Ancel Larzul, Anirvan M. Sengupta, Antoine Georges +1 more

Many-body systems that saturate the quantum bound on chaos are attracting interest across a wide range of fields. Notable examples include the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and its variations, all characterized by some form or randomness and all-to-all couplings. Here, we study many-body quantum chaos in a quantum impurity model showing non-Fermi-liquid physics, the overscreened multichannel S U ( N ) Kondo model. We exactly compute the low-temperature behavior of the out-of-time order correlator in the limit of large N and large number of channels, K , at a fixed ratio γ = K / N . Because of strong correlations at the impurity site, the spin fractionalizes in auxiliary fermions and bosons. We show that all the degrees of freedom of our theory acquire a Lyapunov exponent that is linear in temperature as T → 0 , with a prefactor that depends on γ . Remarkably, for N = K , the impurity spin displays maximal chaos, while bosons and fermions only reach half of the maximal Lyapunov exponent. Our results highlight two key features: a nondisordered model that is maximally chaotic due to strong correlations at its boundary, with the maximal chaos appearing in a composite gauge-invariant operator, the impurity spin, and not in the auxiliary single-particle degrees of freedom.

Maximal Quantum Chaos of the Critical Fermi Surface

Maria Tikhanovskaya, Subir Sachdev A, Aavishkar A. Patel

We investigate the many-body quantum chaos of non-Fermi liquid states with Fermi surfaces in two spatial dimensions by computing their out-of-time-order correlation functions. Using a recently proposed large N theory for the critical Fermi surface, and the ladder identity of Gu and Kitaev, we show that the chaos Lyapunov exponent takes the maximal value of 2πk_{B}T/ℏ, where T is the absolute temperature. We also examine a phenomenological model that can be continuously tuned between a non-Fermi liquid without quasiparticles and a Fermi liquid with quasiparticles. We find that the Lyapunov exponent becomes smaller than the maximal value precisely when quasiparticles are restored.

Quantum chaos and phase transition in the Yukawa–Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Andrew Davis, Yuxuan Wang

We analyze the relation between quantum chaotic behavior and phase transitions of the Yukawa--Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model as a function of filling and temperature, which describes random Yukawa interactions between $N$ complex fermions and $M$ bosons in zero spatial dimensions for both the non-Fermi liquid and insulating states at finite temperature and chemical potential. We solve the ladder equations for the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) for both bosons and fermions. Despite the appearance of the chemical potential in the Hamiltonian, which explicitly introduces an additional energy scale, the OTOCs for the fermions and bosons in the non-Fermi liquid state turn out to be unaffected, and the Lyapunov exponents that diagnose chaos remain maximal. As the chemical potential increases, the system is known to experience a first-order transition from a critical phase to a gapped insulating phase. We postulate that the boundary of the region in parameter space where each phase is (meta)stable coincides with the curve on which the Lyapunov exponent is maximal. By calculating the exponent in the insulating phase and comparing to numerical results on the boundaries of stability, we show that this is plausible.

Universal quench dynamics of q -fermion Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models

Haixin Qiu, Stefan K. Kehrein

We study the quantum quench of the Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and one of its random hopping extensions with q fermions and one boson. Several equilibrium properties are computed for general q with different parameter scaling within the large- N dynamical mean-field scheme. The non-Fermi liquid quench dynamics are studied by integrating the Kadanoff-Baym equations for switching off the random hopping term with constant Yukawa coupling or quenching to different final Yukawa couplings. The postquench oscillations and relaxation dynamics are insensitive to the quench amplitudes deep inside the non-Fermi liquid phase. With weak hopping coupling quenches, we find universal thermalization dynamics similar to the SYK model; however, with two temperatures and two distinct relaxation rates for bosons and fermions, both signal Planckian relaxations without quasiparticles, as in strange metals.
