A primer on Kitaev model: basic aspects, material realization, and recent experiments

Saptarshi Mandal

This elementary review article is aimed to the beginning graduate students interested to know basic aspects of Kitaev model. We begin with a very lucid introduction of Kitaev model and present its exact solution, Hilbert space structure, fractionalization, spin-spin correlation function and topological degeneracy in an elementary way. We then discuss the recent proposal of realizing Kitaev interaction in certain materials. Finally we present some recent experiments done on these materials, mainly magnetization, susceptibility, specific heat and thermal Hall effect to elucidate the recent status of material realization of coveted Kitaev spin-liquid phase. We end with a brief discussion on other theoretical works on Kitaev model from different many-body aspects.

Magnetocaloric effect of topological excitations in Kitaev magnets

Han Li, Enze Lv, Ning Xi +4 more

Traditional magnetic sub-Kelvin cooling relies on the nearly free local moments in hydrate paramagnetic salts, whose utility is hampered by the dilute magnetic ions and low thermal conductivity. Here we propose to use instead fractional excitations inherent to quantum spin liquids (QSLs) as an alternative, which are sensitive to external fields and can induce a very distinctive magnetocaloric effect. With state-of-the-art tensor-network approach, we compute low-temperature properties of Kitaev honeycomb model. For the ferromagnetic case, strong demagnetization cooling effect is observed due to the nearly free Z2 vortices via spin fractionalization, described by a paramagnetic equation of state with a renormalized Curie constant. For the antiferromagnetic Kitaev case, we uncover an intermediate-field gapless QSL phase with very large spin entropy, possibly due to the emergence of spinon Fermi surface and gauge field. Potential realization of topological excitation magnetocalorics in Kitaev materials is also discussed, which may offer a promising pathway to circumvent existing limitations in the paramagnetic hydrates. Recently, frustrated quantum magnets have attracted interest for magnetocaloric applications. Here, using numerical calculations, the authors find a pronounced demagnetization cooling effect in the Kitaev magnets, ascribed to fractionalized topological excitations in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid regime.

Thermodynamics of three-dimensional Kitaev quantum spin liquids via tensor networks

Saeed S. Jahromi, Hadi Yarloo, Román Orús

We study the 3D Kitaev and Kitaev-Heisenberg models, respectively, on the hyperhoneycomb and hyperoctagon lattices, both at zero and finite-temperature, in the thermodynamic limit. Our analysis relies on advanced tensor network (TN) simulations based on graph projected entangled-pair states (gPEPS). We map out the TN phase diagrams of the models and characterize their underlying gapped and gapless phases both at zero and finite temperature. In particular, we demonstrate how cooling down the hyperhoneycomb system from high temperature leads to fractionalization of spins to Majorana fermions and gauge fields that occurs in two separate temperature regimes, leaving their fingerprint on specific heat as a double-peak feature as well as on other quantities such as the thermal entropy, spin-spin correlations, and bond entropy. Using the Majorana representation of the Kitaev model, we further show that the low-temperature thermal transition to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase is associated with the nontrivial Majorana band topology and the presence of Weyl nodes, which manifests itself via nonvanishing Chern number and finite thermal Hall conductivity. Beyond the pure Kitaev limit, we study the 3D Kitaev-Heisenberg (KH) model on the hyperoctagon lattice and extract the full phase diagram for different Heisenberg couplings. We further explore the thermodynamic properties of the magnetically-ordered regions in the KH model and show that, in contrast to the QSL phase, here the thermal phase transition follows the standard Landau symmetry-breaking theory.

High-field quantum spin liquid transitions and angle-field phase diagram of the Kitaev magnet α−RuCl3

Han Li, Wei Li, Gang Su

The pursuit of quantum spin liquid (QSL) in the Kitaev honeycomb magnets has drawn intensive attention recently. In particular, $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$ has been widely recognized as a promising candidate for the Kitaev QSL. Although the compound exhibits an antiferromagnetic order under zero field, it is believed to be endowed with fractionalized excitations and can be driven to the QSL phase by magnetic fields. Here, based on a realistic $K\text{\ensuremath{-}}J\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ model for $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$, we exploit the exponential tensor renormalization group approach to explore the phase diagram of the compound under magnetic fields. We calculate the thermodynamic quantities, including the specific heat, Gr\"uneisen parameter, magnetic torque, magnetotropic susceptibility, and so on, under a magnetic field with a tilting angle $\ensuremath{\theta}$ to the ${c}^{*}$-axis perpendicular to the honeycomb plane. We find an extended QSL in the angle-field phase diagram determined with thermodynamic responses. The gapless nature of such field-induced QSL is identified from the specific heat and entropy data computed down to very low temperatures. The present study provides guidance for future high-field experiments for the QSL in $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{RuCl}}_{3}$ and other candidate Kitaev magnets.
