Abstract

In this work we study the use of noiseless attenuation and noiseless amplification, in terms of multi-mode Continuous-Variable (CV) Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) over satellite-to-ground channels. We propose an improved multi-mode CV-QKD protocol where noiseless attenuation and noiseless amplification operations are applied at the transmitter and the receiver, respectively. Our results show that consistent with single-mode CV-QKD, the noiseless amplification operation, when applied at the receiver, can increase the transmission distance and the channel noise tolerance of multi-mode CV-QKD. Different from single-mode CV-QKD, in multi-mode CV-QKD the key rate improvement offered by noiseless amplification can be further enhanced by adding noiseless attenuation at the transmitter.

Noiseless Attenuation for Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution over Ground-Satellite Uplink

Shengjie Xu, Yin Qiang Li, Yijun Wang +4 more

Satellite-based quantum key distribution (QKD) has lately received considerable attention due to its potential to establish a secure global network. Associated with its application is a turbulent atmosphere that sets a notable restriction to the transmission efficiency, which is especially challenging for ground-to-satellite uplink scenarios. Here, we propose a novel noiseless attenuation (NA) scheme involving a zero-photon catalysis operation for source preparation to improve the performance of continuous-variable (CV) QKD over uplink. Numerical analysis shows that the NA-based CV-QKD, under attenuation optimization, outperforms the traditional CV-QKD, which is embodied in extending the allowable zenith angle while improving the effective communication time. Attributing to characteristics of the attenuation optimization, we find that the NA-involved source preparation improves the security bound by relatively reducing the amount of information available to eavesdroppers. Taking the finite-size effect into account, we achieve a tighter bond of security, which is more practical compared with the asymptotic limit.

Continuous variable quantum key distribution with multi-mode signals for noisy detectors

Rupesh Kumar, Xinke Tang, A. Wonfor +2 more

This paper proposes a multi-mode Gaussian modulated continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) scheme able to operate at high bandwidth despite using conventional noisy, coherent detectors. We demonstrate enhancement in shot-noise sensitivity as well as reduction in the electronic noise variance of the coherent receiver of the multi-mode CV-QKD system. A proof-of-concept simulation is presented using multiple modes; this demonstrates an increase in signal-to-noise ratio and secure key rate at various transmission distances with increasing signal modes.

Feasibility and parameter optimization of ground-to-satellite uplink continuous-variable quantum key distribution

Jin Cheng, Yujie Chen, Ao Liu +7 more

Abstract Driven by the necessitates of wide-area quantum secure communication networks, ground-to-satellite quantum key distribution (QKD) has been highlighted in the field of quantum information. Continuous variable QKD (CV-QKD) shows the advantages of a high secure key rate generation and compatibility in the fiber channel, but the communication range is limited by low attenuation tolerance. In this study, the feasibility of the uplink CV-QKD for Very Low Earth Orbit satellite is studied, and the influence of practical factors such as atmospheric turbulence and beam pointing errors under dynamic time-varying satellite orbital parameters is analyzed to model realistic transmission channels. A parameter optimization scheme for orbital parameters, spot size, receiving telescope aperture, and modulation variance has been proposed to enhance the performance of the actual uplink CV-QKD, providing a reference for parameter selection in CV-QKD experiments.

Enhanced continuous-variable quantum key distribution protocol via adaptive signal processing

Özlem Erkılıç, Biveen Shajilal, Lorcán O. Conlon +7 more

Abstract Quantum key distribution (QKD) provides secure communication using quantum mechanics, with continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) being an attractive solution due to its compatibility with existing telecommunication technology. Its main drawback is susceptibility to signal loss in fibres and free-space links, including satellites, which limits performance. Here we show a software-based protocol enhancing CV-QKD by applying adaptive filters at the transmitter and receiver, allowing the system to dynamically respond to changing channel conditions. Our security analysis avoids relying on Gaussian extremality, giving accurate bounds on an eavesdropper’s information. The protocol can also extract keys in regions that would normally be considered insecure. We demonstrate a threefold increase in secret-key rates compared with the best existing CV-QKD protocol, and in satellite simulations, up to a 400-fold improvement. Because it requires no hardware modifications, our method can be readily integrated into existing systems, paving the way for more practical and robust quantum communication networks.

Four-State Modulation in Middle of a Quantum Channel for Continuous-Variable Quantum Key Distribution Protocol with Noiseless Linear Amplifier*

Yu Mao, Qi Liu, Ying Guo +2 more

We characterize a modified continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) protocol with four states in the middle of a quantum channel. In this protocol, two noiseless linear amplifiers (NLAs) are inserted before each detector of the two parts, Alice and Bob, with the purpose of increasing the secret key rate and the maximum transmission distance. We present the performance analysis of the new four-state CV-QKD protocol over a Gaussian lossy and noisy channel. The simulation results show that the NLAs with a reasonable gain g can effectively enhance the secret key rate as well as the maximum transmission distance, which is generally satisfied in practice.

Feasibility of higher key rate continuous variable quantum key distribution with multi-mode signals

Rupesh Kumar, Timothy P. Spiller

This paper examines the feasibility of multi-mode Gaussian modulated continuous variable quantum key distribution (CV-QKD) systems for higher rate secure key generation at longer distances. We consider different multi-mode transmission scenarios and propose a feasible experimental set-up for a previously proposed multi-mode CV-QKD system with joint quadrature measurement [1]. We compare signal to noise ratios (SNR) of multi-mode schemes and show many fold improvements in the joint quadrature detection based CV-QKD system.
